"Or should you?!" Hmm.... Consciousness is like a running computer "program/code", it runs while the human body is powered on with blood flowing, but once the heart stops so does the brain and thus the "program/code". The body is nothing but a "tin can" a "vehicle" or a "laptop" if you will. Once the brain dies the body is nothing but an empty shell... just burn it, bury it, there's really nothing sexy about it. lmao

I'm curious about the language used by the actor to introduce the questionnaire to the control group. To me, "this is just about your gut-level reactions" could have prompted the control group to answer faster than the study group, which in turn could've affected the interpretation that the study group members were more thoughtful. Yes. I'm almost 18 and have also been thinking about it for a long time. Death is inevitable and cannot be changed, however, our stance on death can. I have both accepted death and feared it in the past. I find death acceptance isn't a permanent thought. For me, it'll eventually turn into fear again. But I gain peace in knowing that there's nothing wrong with that. The moments of clarity I have regarding death inform my other emotions and thoughts. So even if I can only accept death in some moments while I fear it some others, I gain wisdom and a growing sense of contentment.

I've been dealing with death a lot as a 22 year old. Nobody has died around me but just the realization that I'm going to be in a moment like this one looking through my eyes and thinking internally and it's gonna be the moment when I take my last breath and everything will fade away I assume. I don't know how to even think about what it will look like after that. After it all goes black or after I fall asleep or whatever it feels like in that moment. It's terrifying. That moment haunts me and it's never even happened yet. Everything I've ever known and experienced will just not be anymore. No more internal dialogue, no more dreams, no more love or anger, or pain or happiness. My atoms will fall apart and turn into nothing again. How am I supposed to even deal with that? It's an endless cycle that I can't come to terms with. I also disagree with that lady when she said that death brings life meaning. I'm haunted by that moment, yes, but it's not why I'm thinking right now. It's not why I'm getting up and feeding myself right now. It's not why I'm wanting to feel sunlight right now. It's the utter absence of all of those things. how am I not supposed to be upset that I won't get to experience those things anymore?

Exactly. The thing that has helped me the most to cope with these same thoughts is the sentiment she kinda touched on with "Living as long as i can till technology saves me" because i doubt ill live long enough to see technology reach that point even if im cryo frozen. What i take from that statement tho is something that ive already told myself many times and its the thought that even tho that moment will come, im going to keep going out of spite. To say fuck you, ill last as long as i want to and im going to keep running every time the reaper is close because i know eventually itll catch me. But that doesn't mean i have to let it win till it has to. While this thinking doesn't help everyone it has certainly helped me. Especially with making decisions in my life and teaching me what i really want from this existence. Each moment im not true to what i really want from this life is a moment wasted. And i wont let the reaper win by lettin me waste more time stressing about its inevitable arrival.

It would be really interesting to see a large-scale study of Terror Management Theory that looks at a lot of different angles. One of the things that I'm most curious about is how TMT applies to cultures that have differing perspectives on death. I would imagine that how someone feels about what happens to them after death would have a fairly dramatic effect on how the presence of death influences their perceptions

I’ve got to be honest, the theory is honestly completely opposite of what my personal experience has been. I used to be very judgmental and harsh on a certain group of people who I have extremely different opinions with, and I used to want all sorts of bad things to happen to them. Not death or torture, but being ostracized, treated differently, instilled with fear and terror, etc. Once I had my own months-long death scare (extremely health anxiety and frequent panic attacks, nothing’s actually wrong with me thankfully) I began to have a change in attitude, wishing to treat them equally and not wanting anything bad to happen to anyone. Because as Megatron said when he disbanded the Decepticons, “I now know the true meaning of oppression, and have thus lost my taste for inflicting it”.

A bit late on this video, and this comment. When I think about death I relate it to my (at the time) life long best friend that passed abruptly when we were 18. I remember how absolutely gutted I was, how unfair it felt etc etc. Now many years later, I can't help but think about how full those 18 years were. When I compare it to my own life, even with all these extra years I've lived passed him my life still feels less full than he had with much less time. It's hard to always keep perspective on this, but living hundreds of years of working a job that doesn't fulfill you will never be as meaningful as living 18 full of love and adventures, and I think without death lurking around the corner for us all, we'd never care enough to give that love or spend the time needed to make life worth it. I hope you find your transcendent purpose so you don't feel the need to ever press that button.
@theeyeofomnipotent8 ай бұрын
Hmm, Though i want both, to be fulfilled and live long and more, The unfulfilling life is the result of a system that demands efficiency and exploitation over sentient decency. An emphatiless system..., so if one wants to work, try to work on a more human centric company or people hehehe This reality has a lot more to offer, I don't think about death nor does it motivate me to do meaningful stuff. Those things are meaningful by themself. We are the ones that gives meaning to the meaningless. I want to experience an era where we can save the sun, and put a tracker on consciousness... an era of rejuvinators, so we can even save even those who have died, and of ressurectors The mark of a non-ideal civilization is deaths and suffering, so the mark of an advanced civilization would be the reverse of that, Even if we can't act. We are the witnessers, and I wanna witness more Let's see if a pure consciousness can insert itself into this universe, a unientity. I hope you all have a fulfilling life and more
@andeverytimewekiss6 ай бұрын
i know comparing this topic to works of fiction might be a little insensitive, but all i can think of is a part of the sandman comics. a man named hob declares that he won’t die because he’s just decided that he won’t. Dream overhears this and gets Death to allow him to keep living. every 100 years Dream meets back up with Hob to see how he is and if he still wants to keep living. No matter how miserable or unfulfilling a life hob lives between those meetings, he always says that he wants to keep on living. it’s the first time in any media where a character has been faced with eternity and decided to keep living. it’s hard to think about whether or not i’d be the same.

seeing people say this gave them comfort just confuses me, only because I’m so terrified of the idea of death. Recently it’s come to my mind a lot, i often find myself having a laugh or a good time only to remember this sad fact. Is it bad that i want to stay? is it bad that i don’t want to go indefinitely? I wish this wasn’t a truth of life or something to accept as i feel i can’t accept it. i’ve heard different perspectives and have talked to many people who i feel are wise enough, but that doesn’t change the fact that one day i will dissipate from what i once was. i tried not crying multiple times this video over it as it’s just been such a tough topic for me. regardless i just hope everyone here finds the comfort i haven’t and i hope i can find as well (sorry i just had to vent somewhere).
@rynvail521 Жыл бұрын
I think one thing people find comforting about the video is that this is something every person grapples with. You aren't alone in your anxieties. It can be scary, and that's okay. There a couple of things I would suggest that might help you, because they've helped me, but if they don't that's okay as well. Remember that even if someone else's ideas don't work for you, that doesn't mean they don't understand. You aren't alone. The first thing I would recommend, particularly for the moments where anxiety is particularly strong, is to ground yourself in the moment. Take a deep breath and feel that you are alive right now. You can see and feel the world around you. Your mind might keep straying to detrimental anxieties about death but try to just focus on the physicality of where you are right now. Maybe look into mindfulness techniques. This doesn't mean pushing your fear down or ignoring that death is an option, just regrounding yourself in reality when your mind starts to spiral. Second, reframing things might be useful. Death doesn't mean your existence never was. Your convinces is an emergent pattern born from the way the universe is currently ordered. You aren't the same person you were ten years ago, and you aren't the person who will be here ten years from now. Your atoms come from the universe and you are made up of the same matter as everything else. When you die, you will change. But that doesn't mean you stop existing. You will be part of this universe, your impact on places and people will shape what comes, and new things will take form. You've been stardust before and you'll be stardust again. And we'll be stardust together. Even if you won't quite be you, you won't be alone.

Seeing Caitlyn get so excited to hear that Michael is willing to make choices about his death is so cool. Especially because it is exactly what she advocates for. I love her so much, she has helped me become more comfortable with death even if it still is horribly terrifying. I hope i get to meet her one day.

Am I the only one who does want to die? Not right now but I can't imagine living forever. Even without the whole aging process I think 100-200 years is way more than enough. Even beyond 100 years of healthy happy life it's getting absurd. I'm a scientist and the biggest and saddest realization is to know I will die not knowing a billionth of what there is to know. But without a deadline there is no drive to move forward. and I'd prefer a short life of knowledge than an eternity of ignorance
