shhhhhh Also to address a lot of comments about how in the films the sound makes the aliens expose their soft meaty parts which makes them vulnerable....you are correct. That is how it is in the movie. An interesting hurdle with this show is we generally need to get by on fair use. Certain elements we riff off need to be changed to make sure we won't be sued. I literally have to send the scripts and the final videos to a lawyer to make sure that they fall within fair use. The magic of movies!

@@DelphinidaeZeta Interesting. The only way to really check that the sound you're hearing is 18 kHz though would be to download the audio without re-encoding it into another format and actually look at a spectrogram of it to see if there's a line at 18 kHz. I’d say no. You can hear where there is an absence of sound, like when someone walks into a room and a background noise like a fan goes quiet. If the monster got close enough it could hear you due to the lack of sound in that area, if the ambient sound allowed it.
@CosmicDoggoo3 жыл бұрын
This is basically echo-location. Just instead of generating a sound to determine distance, you take advantage of the already existing noises. The KZbin channel "It's Okay To Be Smart" made a video showing 2 blind people using this to "see". Also one of the sound engineers for this film said something along the lines of "The production team consensus was that these are intelligent beings that communicate and even use echo-location". Which seems to be backed up by the clicking noises they make in the movie. So no need for ambient noise :D

There is never anything as true silence that people can "hear". Even the quietest place you can imagine still has ambient sounds. Even an anechoic chamber still has sound, such as your own heartbeat and breathing. I'm one of the few who can experience true silence as I am deaf and even with a description it likely be impossible for anyone who hasn't experienced it to fully understand. Great video series. I feel like you missed the biggest plot hole in the original movie that should affect survival. If these creatures are sensitive enough to sound that they can hear normal human conversation or a person running from say 1/4 mile away, then they should be able to easily hear human body functions like heartbeat and breathing from 10 ft. way. That is based on the science of how sound goes through an exponential drop in intensity/amplitude due to dispersal of the wave as wave surface area increases. There are multiple animals in nature that can hunt solely via heartbeat of their prey, yet there are multiple scenes in the movie where our protagonists survive with a creature less than 10 ft. away just by staying still and keeping quiet. I thought you were on this path when you started talking about the sounds of bodily functions, yet that ended up just being a tangent that was not fully addressed.
