The were four more of these at the estate sale which I did not buy, but when I picked up the box they were in to look at them, all four started ringing and I had no idea how to stop them so I took them over to the guy running the sale and said, "here."

I used to sell these alarms. First, before you have smoke, you have heat. These alarms are the best there are. They save lives!!! The smoke detectors work if you have a trash can something hot is accidentally dropped in. The Vulcans ring for at least 30 minutes and are louder than a school alarm: imagine that up close inside your home. They are purposely made with a spring, rather than electrically activated, because in a fire, electricity may go off. It's even possible an electrical short may be the cause of a fire. Call the company in Sacramento and they can hook you up with a local distributor. DO let the distributor come out and explain these to you. It is important that you know what to do if you have a fire, as well as ways to actually PREVENT fire in your home. This is NOT about a "sales pitch", but rather properly protecting your family!!! These people DO Care!!!

I've had these since the 1970s. They're supposed to be mounted 10in down from the highest point from the ceiling. There was a matching smoke detector. It was the kind that has a light in a closed chamber not one that detects products of combustion. The failing was the light would go out and you need to replace it. I still have both. I may sell them in my next garage sale. My problem is I have a vaulted ceiling that is 12 ft high and 10 inches from the highest point means I need an extension ladder to get up to reset it. They work wonderfully and yes they actually do ring for almost 7 minutes when they go off. To rewind them you turn the gong clockwise while holding the back until it is fully wound. You then turn it counterclockwise while holding the flag in to reset the flag. The flag is there to warn you if the gong went off while you were away from home.

I remember testing them in the presentation to potential buyers with a candle and a milk carton shaped cardboard stand over the candle and the alarm placed face down on top of it allowing the alarm to get hot and set it off. Interesting that a lot of thought went into the design as the petal design was to disrupt the flow of air just enough to make it more sensitive to heat. These were designed to go into kitchens and bedrooms and an optical detector would be placed in the hallways. You also would place them away from dead air zones where the walls and ceiling met, or corners where 2 walls and ceiling met. The silent sentry that never sleeps and has no battery to run down. There is no wax for the sensor, it is a bi-metallic element that is reset with the button on the back once the alarm cooled down after testing, then simply rewound and placed back into service. They were very good, but were expensive. But then again, how much do you value your life and the life of your family. Regarding why a smoke detector was used in addition to these heat detectors is that you would never place a smoke detector in either a kitchen, room with a fireplace, or a utility room with a gas fired water heater as you would get many false alarms. The smoke detector was usually placed in the hall and the heat detectors were placed in all rooms.

I bought a house with these installed on the walls in a few places. Mine also have chains attached? Any reason as to why is beyond me... Any input is appreciated.
@BeverlySmith-tf1jp Жыл бұрын
The chain is usually attached to one of the units that is in a bedroom. The chain can be pulled to activate the alarm in case of a burglary or emergency.

Also, no spring...its a 21 foot high tension surgical steel band wrapped around cams and brakers. It will ring for 6 minutes and 45 seconds.

It is a clock spring.

@@BobHudsonVideo According to the salesman who sold me mine in the 1970s it is a spring wound in a figure 8 configuration.

All of you seem to understand these. But for those that read this and don't, please do call the company and get a presentation! It does not take long, and learning how to protect your family is well worth, Even if you don't buy the alarms. If you do buy them the presenter will mount them for you and know how many you need. Finally, I have not sold these for many years; nonetheless,. I know how good they are and will always have them in my own home .
