I do love joslins marana shoes. They fit my foot shape perfectly. They last for a lot longer than any other shoe I've tried. I suppose they do take a bit of time to break in but they still skate well for me fresh outs the box. Vans and some others creat a weird pressure point in my foot when breaking in that causes real pain and makes it difficult to skate and not get hurt compensating for the weird foot pain. Just my two cents on my experience. Love your informative vids

@@ninmoron3150 I have the Westgate 508s and just got some 440s as well. I haven't skated either yet. They look too rad to ruin yet. I think the 440s would hold up better. The 508s are extremely comfortable. The 440s are stiffer. There is more rubber on the sides of the cup sole on the 440s. It's pretty minimal on the 508s. Someone else mentioned that the heel is lose on the 508s. Compared to the 440s, I think this is true. The 440s seem to lock in your heels more. The 508s seem to have more board feel in the sole. I think they are thinner. The 508s have a single piece of rubber for the sole. The 440s have two. The 440s seem like they are pretty darn durable. It seems like they would take more breaking in. The 508s seem like they wouldn't require much break in at all. Also, the 440s sole seems to stick out more on the sides. I think maybe it's that way to prevent rolling your ankle, or maybe it's just the fact that the rubber on the side is beefier. They seem pretty damn durable to me. The ones I have are the black ones with the gum sole with suede. There are others that have more leather. Same thing for the 508s. I'm thinking the leather ones would probably hold up better. The rubber sole on the 440s seems pretty tough too. This is just my impression. Your mileage may vary. I haven't skated either of them yet. Overall, I think the 440s would hold up better.

Biggest most reinforced cup soles I can find with nice thick soles and some airbag heels 👌🏻 I've never personally understood the "board feel" argument in recent years to justify these thinner shoes.. when I grew up we all had ultra thin boards and cinderblocks on our feet, often times stuffed with the cut up padding from old shoes to make them even bigger! Different strokes for different folks, but if I'm spending $100 on a pair I want it to last longer than a week and protect me from board impacts and heel bruises

Here's some insight; I'm 45 and will only wear hightop cupsoles to skate in. There is no better feeling than wearing slip on vulcs on a skateboard but I just can't do it anymore. 2 years ago my feet ached every day, I skate roughly 2-3 times a week, since wearing cupsoles only, my feet don't ache like they did. I also rolled my ankle about a year and a half ago, hightops took care of that, too. So, ride vulcs while your feet can take it, then get cupsoles when you get old. Or, wear vulcs to cruise in and cupsoles when you're gonna get buck...or just plan on running out of a something repeatedly. Nice video, the cupsole vs vulc never gets old.

I've been using those too. A big advantage is you can find them on sale on Amazon for $39 from time to time. Almost half the price of most of the skate shoes I've seen. The upper part of the shoes is pretty durable. It would be nice if there was a bit more rubber on the side, though that hasn't really been an issue for me so far. The weak point is the pattern on the soles (I don't like the circular suction cups, the tread in the back wears out in the heel from walking also). I've been wearing through them near my big toe. Next pair I start, I want to fill in the cracks in the treads with shoe goo. If you look at Adidas skate shoes you can see that a lot of them are just modified soccer shoes that they had previously. Also, the good thing about Sambas is that they have been around for decades and they don't get phased out like other shoes. If the rubber on the soles was filled in a little more, I think those shoes would be virtually indestructible. Certainly, for non-skate use.

Best shoes for me is the DC Kalis (the new one with cupsole) and my favorite and only vulc that i love enough to buy was the New Balance Jami Foy 306. The DC have just enough protection and board feel and tough too. The 306 have really good board feel and they skate amazing out of the box but have less protection for my foot but i will have another one for sure! New Balance are surprisingly tough too!

Had a pair of reissued scams recently, they were amazing. They felt good straight away and lasted about 5 months before wearing through the sole. Van's feel awesome, but I'm always through the sole after a couple of months.

Favorite show I ever skated was the Rowley XLT. They shredded up fast but everything felt good on them. I'm still stuck on bigger cupsoles so Accel OGs for me now.

Best cupsole with super fast break in and lots of boardfeel is the one éS uses on their Swift 1.5!

I've started skating a pair of Marana's, I've only ever skated Vans and Nike Blazers before now and I go through them. in no time at all. I guess I skate a lot but as much as I love the board feel of Vans and the look of the shoes (Half Cab and Classics all the way) I just can't be buying shoes as often as I have, it's both expensive and ecologically terrible, I do try to always patch up shoes with shoe goo so I can get some wear out of them even when they have holes in the soles but even so. The feel of the cup sole is indeed very different, at first I hated it, I couldn't feel my board at all, but gradually it's coming back and I'm getting used to it. Durability so far has been good, we'll see how they last longer term.

Awsome video. That's exactly the same thing I noticed on heels w- the cup. My faverite vulc was probably blazers and Chuck taylors, then for cups, probably dunk or af1. I don't mind nollie heel in vulc slip ons even, but almost avoid heels unless I'm wearing cupsoles. You pretty much nailed it on this one

I'm the guy that can't ride without board feel. This is the most important thing in skateboarding for me. I've rolled ankles many, many times. Also what you're saying, that old grip + cupsole is a nightmare. I'm changing fabric soles to cheap orthopedic for better board feel and cushion:)

I can’t ride vulc. At over 30 years old, they just don’t protect my feet enough. I have been riding the Joslin’s 1 for 3 pairs now and I absolutely love them! I just also tried the NB 508 too and while I really like the shoes, they don’t protect your feet that much from impact. Back to Joslins after I’m done with the 508

Dude thanks for sharing! 32 here and my old school pros just didn't protect my feet enough and brusied heels suck. Went with etnies Marana and am much happier. I'll give the Joslins a look.

I've skated a lot of the NB numerics and the the Westgate's felt like the least padded by far. The Foy's feel good on my 36 year old feet if you want something kind of like a more padded 508.

I can't recommend the eS' Accel Slims enough. Cupsole, a little on the thinner side, but with the STI insoles they come with, they really don't hurt on hard lands or primos.

I usually have 2 pairs of skate shoes in rotation. My favourites are the Lakai vulcs and the Etnies Maranas. The vulcs have incredible board feel and flick but little impact protection. The Maranas have better impact protection, super durable but less consistent flick in my opinion. I usually pick a shoe for the type of skating I'm going to be doing that day. If I'm planning to hit stair sets I'll bring out the Maranas and if I want to do more flatground tech or vert I'd go with the Lakais.

The Joslin Vulc is a great one. I have been riding this model for the last 6 months. Excellent board feel and durable. Not as durable as the Marana, but still above average for vulcanized shoes.

Thanks for the video, helpful. I'll probably get a pair of those Newbalance shoes, as I get older I value a more comfortable shoe but I don't like it when they feel too bulky or heavy.

Tried the Nikes ended up giving them to my brother straightaway cupsole no cushioning, no board feel. Switched over to Vans and have been riding them ever since Rowans being my preferred. Purchase them a half size down for length so my toe has little space forward and slightly tight width. They break in beautifully after about a week and the cushioning lasts for the duration of riding them. Complete feel of the board admittedly the flips take a little while to break in but when it does its perfect for a long time and the shoes last about 5 months without issue. Some have lasted longer but not as young as used to be.
