best engine I have built to date is a very unassing 1600 single port running a 30 pict carb ..an old Empi exhaust and a doghouse cooler and a magnaspark...reliable as the day has 24hrs in it , ripper of a little engine pokey and torquey and loves 70mph ..oil temps have never exceeded 70degrees celcius and never seen over 4000rpm..Will be a sad day when I put my bigger engine in with a type 3 box..

I hear exactly what you are saying. I have a stock 1500 single port, single relief engine. It is currently in pieces. I have rebuilt the heads with new valves and solid shaft rockers. I will be running an empi 4100 cam with chromoly pushrods. I have bumped it up to 1641 with a slip in kit. I have both types of empi lifters. ( with and without the oil hole) Not sure which to go with. I am using an external oil cooler. This will be wrapped in the cooler weather. I wanted a stock flywheel but was set a lightened one. I'll give it a shot. I am also running my stock solex 30 pict 1. Such a simple workhorse of a carburetor. The cases look good but full of crud. Replaced both cam and crank bearings. I want this to run a long time before coming apart again. This is all going into my trike. Like in a sandrail, most of the engine is exposed to ambient cooling. This is my first build. I have learned so much from you and others. You've been a blessing. I can't wait to follow you along on this build. Thank you sir, Jim
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 5 жыл бұрын
Your cam shaft choice is to aggressive for that carburetor. Your on your own with EMPI cam and lifters. I would love to hear how it turns out. I would stick with stock unless you have dual port heads and dual carbs. The lighter flywheel is great for a lightweight trike. Your empi kit is 276 duration and .420 lift with 1.11 stock rockers. It will be noisy with those chrome moly pushrods. It won't last long with stock valve springs. You will soon have it apart to make some changes.

Thanks for your encouragement an feed back. I guess I have had enough struggles, it's time to get back to basics. It doesn't take long to change out an engine and play with some extra power when the time comes. Horse Power is one of those things that really feels wonderful when you first experience it but it fades away like anything else.

Love your videos EZ... You always have something useful for me... I'm running a 90% Berg motor that needs new heads and I decided to go DP. Bought the DP Kadron manifolds already so not turning back now. Maybe saved me some money because I now know which head studs need to be shorter (8mm). Maybe they will sell me just the four studs I need...we'll see. Also plan on buying the Berg valve guide boss cutter you have featured and put my dual springs and retainers/keepers on L3 heads. Currently running thick walled Berg 88 "specials". I built this motor from the Berg balanced clutch/flywheel/crank/pulley assembly on up... it's been 17 years and I'm feeling a little green. I've been enjoying your videos to help get me back up to speed. EVERYONE...Buy the Bentley manual... it's worth every penny.

In one of vwdarrin's videos he mentioned replacing the full circle #3 bearing with a two piece #2 bearing. I can see the benefit of this as the #3 bearing can be easily replaced without removing the camshaft and distributor gears from the crankshaft. My question is, have you ever done this and does a dowel pin hole need to be drilled in the case half where the other half of the bearing rests much like the #2 bearing half?
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 4 жыл бұрын
This trick has been around since the 60's and Gene Berg used to insist on it with his longer stroke crankshafts. Longer Case Life With # 3 Bearing Conversion - Technical Tip To provide a longer stroker crank that has more strength than the stock VW forging or any other after market forged crankshaft; the 411 center main journal is required. For that reason all of the "Berg" forged cranks are made with the 411 center main to provide a stronger cross sectional area at the center journal. To maintain proper case strength, I use a special adapter bearing (GB 157) that fits the stock case and this larger crankshaft main journal. It is a steel backed bearing, as was the one it replaced, leaving the regular (steel back) split #2 main bearing as an extra. Gary, has been installing these split #2 bearings in the #3 location for years on all engines that use a 411 center main bearing crankshaft, having the round #3 bearing as the leftover. This requires adding a dowel hole in the other half of most cases at the #3 location so it will accept the dowel. A few cases have this dowel hole from the factory, but it is likely you will need to add the hole. Gary made a drill fixture by drilling through the pin hole in an old #2 split bearing, installing that bearing in the case and drilling a pin hole about a 1/4" deep into the case at the #3 location. Extremely simple! This provides much stronger case and crankshaft support when using the split steel backed bearings in both #2 and #3 locations. Further, it is no longer necessary to remove or replace the cam/distributor drive gears from the crankshaft when working on the engine or changing main bearings. See LA CASE030 for adding dowel hole. I personally have never done this or feel the need to. I play hard with my engines but don't abuse them constantly. I have not had bearing or crankshaft problems in 30 years. With the proper gear puller it just takes a couple of minutes to pull the old gear off and reheat the gear to put it back on. If you have to keep changing the main bearings you will most likely need to have the crankshaft turned or replaced. Some racers change the rod bearings and rod bolts frequently during a race season.

Absolutely love watching your channel. I have a question about a 1776 motor that was built for me. I wanted to run a 34 pict and factory intake and air box on a 74 Ghia, however, I've got 39mm intake and 32mm exhaust valves with an engle 100 cam. Can this be done? I haven't found any info about it other than I need a progressive carb set up. Help!
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 4 жыл бұрын
That would be a sweet engine for Dual 40 IDF webers or Kadrons. You have plenty of room in the Ghia engine bay. You could make the 34 PICT-3 work ok on the highway but in traffic it won't idle well. You will have to fatten up the idle and main jets and absolutely get some heat in the intake manifold. If you already had the parts it would be worth experimenting with but I would rather see you spend the money on something else. The progressive would be a upgrade to get you the higher RPM. Dual carbs would allow it to run smooth as stock with more power and economy and you could have a nice header exhaust. If it was me. I would take the engine apart and install a stock camshaft with new lifters. Then you could go all stock even with the bigger valve heads. If you wanted more zip you could add 1.25 ratio rockers and heavy duty single valve springs. I'm running two 1776 engines with stock camshafts and love it.

So I was wrong, the homemade buggy I got, has a 1966 1300 (51st of 1965) in it. Was thinking it was a 1200. Looked at the number on the case and found it. I know that when it was parked back in 1994, it was burning oil. So I'm thinking, turning it into a 1600. Have to scrap the buggy that it is residing in, its not safe. Going to build a Warrior frame from Acme/Berrien and get it registered as street legal. Any recommendations on freshening this up? A spin on oil filter addon is one of the first things I want to do. Going to be running a 215/75/15 on the front and a 275/75/15 on the rear, so about a 30" rear tire. Using the stock 1966 swing axle.

I would not support your plan. NO Way! If you want to tinker with that old stuff fine. Or even get it running for a spare fine. You will learn some painfull lessons if you go that route and it's original 6 volt stuff. This time of year there are a lot of old high performance dune buggy's and sandrails with high performance parts that are running and for sale in states like, California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada. Everyone is buying those new side by sides and selling there old VW stuff. You can by something running for 1/10th the cost of building it from scratch with all the junk aftermarket parts suppliers are dumping on us.

@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 5 жыл бұрын
I'm real happy with my 1776 SP but there is no comparison to the power of a dual carb dual port. Just depends on what you want to use it for. My SP was just an experiment. I miss the power but like the MPG around town. The choice comes down to what you can afford and how you will use it. I never was a big fan of 1835 or 2180 but that's just me

Would you recommend disassembling the engine and re lubing the cam and lifters or just continue with the break in? After I replace the pump of corse. Lol Thanks Mark S.

If your running single valve springs and you check your valve clearance and find everything ok I would fire it up and run it for 20 minutes over 2500 RPM. Drain the oil while it's hot and refill with fresh oil. Do another valve clearance check and you should be good to rock and roll. Hope you get lots of miles and smiles.

Cb performance is in my back yard and going through them to rebuild and increase the displacement of my 1600 duel port. I noticed you run the oil filter off the oil pump. I was worried that my headers would super heat the oil. I'm also taking the oil cooler off and replacing it with a dog house shroud. Thinking about a 1915 for the sand and desert. Ditch the 69mm crank for some real power. It's not that much more expensive to stroke it and with them in your back yard you can't go wrong. The feeling of power will be there long after the pain in the wallet is forgotten.

Welcome to my family and friends at the EZGZ channel. Keep It Simple and have some fun. My favorite engine is my aluminum block 78X90.5 with STOCK valve heads with heavy single springs. Some of my friends are running close to 2 liter with stock camshaft and single Pic 34 carb. You just need heat in the intake manifold to make it work. I have vids on all this stuff. Take your time and by the way. Maryann at CB has been my sales person for over 20 years.

@@TheEZGZ Maryanne is a very nice lady. Kind heart and loves vw, and dogs. Just got my cases to CB performance for them to look to see if it needs to be line board or not. I'm thinking about using the stock crank if I can and a very mild cam. I have a Weber progressive that I loved on my old 67 VW 1500. I am currently running the heater pipes off of the header to help heat and atomize that gas. Looks like too many washers were on the distributor drive that is in the case, broke went into the camshaft sheared off several of the teeth and then munched up the brass timing gear. There's going to be a lot of new parts going into this one. I opted for the larger motor because I pulled some pretty good sand tires and most of my off-roading is in the sand at Pismo Beach. I do go to California City which is fun too. Thanks for welcoming me into the family I will have more questions than answers I'm sure always look forward to each one of your videos. I think I'm going to run the oil filter in a remote location to get it away from the hot header pipes. I'm going to go back to the old dog house for the oil cooler and get rid of the one that was plastered against my tub buggy.

I’m not a VW guy, I watch just because you never know when you’re going to pick up some little tid bit of information that maybe useful in other areas. Thanks Brian of the real world garage

EZGZ- would you be interested in a video partnership...I’m rebuilding a 40HP, bored to 1385cc, FK cam, 1-1.25 rocker etc. and would love to have a mentor “looking” over my shoulder.

Howdy Pardner, I think you would be further ahead with a stock 1600 and there is plenty of info out there on that. Good Luck with your project!

Wow a 1385! That was the first motor I built, put it in my 67 Beetle while I built the 67 motor. Eventually my 1681 ran 13.2 @ 100mph in the quarter mile. 8 grand with stock non-counterweighted Crank & rods. 14.5 to 1cr
