Great design. Saw one couple of weeks ago and it looks stunning in the flesh. The rear wheel arches area and front end are highlights. Interior is very nice. Much larger car than I expected though and the rear boot area is huge. Very impressive car.

If you tilt the left and right mirrors all the way out (so that the glass part is aimed as far out as possible) and don't use them to see behind the vehicle (use only the rearview mirror above the dash for that), you can eliminate the blind spots.

Great review. 18:03 large B pillar discussion! (And also, thick A pillars limiting view on approaching 45 degree corners). Most modern cars have a limited over-shoulder view. I know some say advanced drivers don't need assistance systems, but I agree with Thomas. Side Assist though not infallable, is useful. On most modern cars! Especially when there is a large warning light, to help. Thanks Thomas.

The design of the new Arteon appears really cool, progressive and aggressive!! It is the most emotional design of VW in the last few years and the car is a worthy successor of the CC. Especially the new front with the R-Line package appears very strong!! 😍 The interior looks like in the new Passat but even this is on a very high level! Maybe it is possible to launch two sporty V6 engines (diesel and petrol)!! Than the car would feel more sovereign. I really wait for this Review and I´m really looking forward to the new Touareg in the upper class of VW!! Excellent Review as allways ;)

Thomas made a great summary of that car and I can understand why he likes it. Some weeks ago I had a rental Arteon R-Line in their special new yellow colour and with the big Diesel. Even if I'm not a big VW Fan, I have to admit that I liked it, too :) In my opinion the design is not pretty, but very cool and new. Together with a lot of space and a nice driving experience it's an interesting option. If... It would not cost more than 60k€ in this spec. Sounds similar than the Phaeton story unfortunately... Little side info: The wireless loading space for the phone is approx. 1cm too small for the normal version of the Galaxy S7, due to the USB next to it. I just couldn't believe how such a joke could happen at Volkswagen and nobody realized it during Development.

Hi Thomas! Fantastic Review as always. Loved the driving part with good views forward through the windscreen. Arteon - love it design-wise. I like pale coloured interiors and contrasting dashboards, even if it is a Passat interior. But even on this top-spec car, why have blank switches around the gearlever - Tiguan doesn't. Radar blind spot warning: works well! Nice frameless windows. Great work Team. Many thanks.

Very good review. I really like exterior and interior styling; sporty and elegant at the same time. I test drove the petrol version here in Dubai, in darker yellow colour, looked very impressive. But as a 185cm tall person, i found it difficult to find a comfortable seating position.

I hope the design language of VW following this trend. Id be more interested in a Passat variant over An Audi A4 of the next Passat gets this front and elegant lines.

Looks great on the outside, pity the inside is the same as a Passat B8. This interior is new to the US market so they'll probably like it. However, it really needed a flagship interior like the outside, or at least some different inlays (carbon fibre or black beech effect), white dials, and ambient lighting in red, like Skoda did on Superb Sportline to make it different. From behind the wheel, it's just a Passat!!!

Good point re the exterior styling taking over from FUNCTION. Just look at the lovely big & roomy vintage cars in the royal wedding - much higher roof, much more glass, much better visibility - back then they put the emphasis on the PASSENGERS! We seem to be going BACKWARDS, despite having better tech.

VW designers, really did a lot with those long, clean and simple lines. I really like this design approach much better than the rounded, over-styled, Mercedes exterior/interior design. Thomas, how did you find it's maneuverability in parking and the turning radius - in other words, would it be a good car for city driving?

Komme aus Wuppertal und finde es daher interessant wo du unterwegs bist. Lasse es ab und zu auf der 535 von Varresbeck Richtung Mettmann fliegen. Der Fahrbahnbelag ist ja nicht der beste, aber dafür ist es oft schön leer. Ansonsten schaue ich eure Tests sehr gerne, da sie nicht so oberflächlich sind, und jedes Auto nur sportlich sein muss, sondern auch an den Alltagsfahrer gedacht wird. LG, Tom

Interior and exterior design, with the driver side blind spot issue considered, is exceptional. However, VW should be aware of calling this vehicle its flagship with very limited interior options in the SEL Premium and the inexplicable absence of a bi-turbo V6 /8-speed dual clutch auto.

The interior is top notch, for a car in this price range. It's clean and almost Audi-like. Question about parking in Germany: most cars are parked with the flow of traffic, sometimes I see cars parked facing traffic. Is this legal? Pump it up !!!!

Great looking exterior ,but the inside is a bit of a disaspointment .Loooks too much like a Passat ,not special,except for the good steering wheel,eveything looks like a Passat.Too expensive because too much like a Passat.Better get an Audi A4/5 for the same money,more premium car.But still great review Thomas,keep it up!

You can get barebones A4/5 for the price of almost fully equipped Arteon. Similarly (and almost fully) equipped Arten is closer to Passat than Audi A5 when it comes to price.

sic221 - yes, judging by on-line configurators, to get an A5 Sportback (5-door hatch) with similar spec to an Arteon (18" wheels, LED's etc, same engine/trans), it was approx £4k more for the A5; and strangely I couldn't find heated steering wheel or Area View as options on the A5 - I probably missed them on the A5 options...

And now try to spec the regular Passat to the same level and you'll see that it will be very close to the Arteon. More - for the Arteon VW has some nice option packs which makes some options cost less than buying them individually.

Hello Thomas, thanks for yet another very useful and complete review. Agree that this is an impressive car but ... what about the price? Realistically, here in France, a similar car to your review would cost about 60 k € and that is quite a sum. Personally, I would prefer to buy three nice second-hand VW Golfs for the same money.

Yup - form over function yet again. By the way, a friend tested the rear head room and says that it is insufficient for me to use as a limo, and in fact he bumped his head getting in. I'm a limo driver in Australia and I am constantly on the lookout for a replacement for the discontinued Holden Caprice - the Arteon is not it.

I have no idea either why they haven’t put faux leather on the outside of the seats. Firstly it doesn’t harm any animals & lastly it’s much cheaper to produce & manufacture faux leather while looking as good, being as durable and better towards heat as real leather!

If only VW stops being so cheap and adds some variation to their interiors I won't think twice before buying one of them. Every single car in their lineup has more or less the same interior. This goes for their other brands as well. There isn't much difference between Skoda, SEAT and VW. Audi gets a pass with the new A7 and A8.

all the brands you mentioned are the part of the same group. I personally think VW and Audi have the nicest or to me most appealing interiors especially the red/white over black contrast while driving at night. Audis also do not vary too much between A1 to A7, however, comparing the Arteon to the A7/8 is pointless as those cars even mid spec are x2 the price.

Autogefühl I’m not too tall so the golf is probably not as good for me in terms of spacial awareness due to the driving position. I have driven the 7 series and Parked it once or twice and preferred it so I think to he driving position. I think it's too bad the Arteon won't be offered with the DSG transmission in the USA. Instead it will come with a normal 8 speed. Not sure if its a cost savings measure or people in the USA didn't like the DSG? I can say first hand that the DSG is the best transmission I have ever used. It's really a shame VW/Audi have replaced them in the USA on most of their models.

The DSG isn't good in stop and go traffic, it is a bit jerky, and Americans complained about it. Also, stop and go traffic is harder on the DSG, and it requires more frequent service intervals. As such, a regular torque converter automatic is more suited to American tastes, on average, and it is cheaper to buy and cheaper to service.

The 8 speed ZF is actually a more comfortable and better transmission for your market.

Don't know if they will use the ZF 8 speed or not. I think it may be the Aisin 8 speed instead. Anyways, I've owned cars with both the DSG and ZF and I can say personally that I much prefer the DSG.

Yippie I'm a limo driver, and the DSG was one reason I didn't buy the Skoda Superb - not smooth enough. I am envious that the Americans get a conventional transmission - I see that over here in Australia, we get the blasted DSG in the Arteon too.

It’s too expensive imo, should be 50k dollars fully loaded. I live in Dubai where the top of the range Arteon 2.0 Turbo 280hp costs 220k AED (almost 60k USD!)

Beautiful car but very expensive, considering that the interior is nothing new and it lacks a V6 engine. In Australia we only get the 206TSI R-Line 3H Auto 4MOTION at the moment. The only extra options are audio upgrade together with 20" rims (for some reason they have these two in the same package) at a fraction under AUS $80.000!!!!!!! Ridiculous money in my opinion. Actually, the word down here is that VW is not really looking at selling volumes with this car. It's their way of showing that they're entering a new design era. I hope that in a few years more options/trims will be offered down under with a more reasonable price tag...

It's particularly striking how divergent the comments are on this vehicle even more so than normal; is it that the very name of VW now stirs up such heated emotion? However the review was typically impartial as we have come to expect from Autogefuehl.
