Head bolt close to exhaust is better idea no Dremel tool required and it is not going need replacing of sender every time you pull spark plug

Why couldn't u just install it under a head stud nut or bolt on the head instead of under the spark plug? Ur still connected to the head so the temperature should be the same right??

Sure you could install under head stud but if you wanted, but my preference is under spark plug on number 3. In my opinion it is the hottest spot on these old air cooled engines and the temp I really want to monitor. So for the most accurate reading I put it right at the source. (Believe heat will dissipate some towards the cylinder head bolts). Much debate on this topic on the samba, but this is my 2 cents. Good luck.

@@GarageTime Seems to me it would be so simple to run 2 leads (to each location) and observe if there is a meaningful difference it mounting under plug vs under head nut! C'mon people! Post the answer and were done!

I just bought a 75 bus and the PO had the DD CHT installed and it did work... but now it doesn't... I didn't do much to it but I did change the spark plugs... now the gauge doesn't even light up... is there something that I'm missing? Is there a diagram I could use to see where all wires go just to see if there is a wire that is not going where it should go or has been cut? would the gauge show me an error if it the ring was off the spark plug? (the engine tin is on so I can't really see what's going on down there haha)

Thermocouple is all that goes back to spark plug, so something has happened under the dash if you lost power to it. Good luck

I bought a CYL HEAD GAGE 35 yrs ago and had it installed till 2 yrs ago when I took the Typ3 engine apart and rebuild it without cutting that notch but when I tried to reinstall the gage, I found two wires, a red and black one. Can anyone tell me where the wires go ? I think the red to the spark plug, but were does the black wire go, to ground ?

Does the thermocouple connector take the place of the spark plug washer (spark plug washer removed), or is the spark plug washer left in place on the spark plug?

Hey did you get the head temp averages with the super cool tin. We did test those even though so many people did disagree with them back then and found a bit cooler temp on average I dont remember the numbers just curious what you got.

Not yet, autostick transmission failed shortly after install of gauge. Rebuilding transmission this winter.
