Don't give up on it bro! My '65 Bus is in worse shape than this one, and I am not letting mine scare me! I do not weld, nor am I a certified mechanic, But determined-dedication is what I have in mind to get it back on the road. It may take years to complete, but I knew this before I commited to getting one. Hang in there with it...it's not as bad as it may look!!

I felt the same way when I restomodded a 52 Willy's Wagon, I am now completely confident on doing a full body off restoration and repairs. Just jump in with both feet and do it you will learn so much and remember you can use the grinder to fix any thing you mess up. To feel out of your comfort zone is when you grow as a person.

A journey starts with that first step. I found a 21 window in a field 4 yrs ago in worse shape then yours. I was at first overwhelmed, didn't know how to do anything, but then I turned to KZbin videos on how to weld, do body work and paint. It took me 2 yrs and $9200 total but in the end it came out pretty good. I sold it for $85,000. If you were in my home town I'd help you with it. You can do it.

Mitch, don’t give up. Do smaller, hidden sections as you learn to weld. The outer panels do spot welds 6” apart. The key is to wait until the welds cool. Then more spot welds, eventually closing the gaps. Very important to not get the metal too hot. It may warp. Keep it up and move forward.

Very good choice moving to Hawaii, you will have a happier and healthier lifestyle there. Will be great to see your videos of your life there. Maybe you think think of the bust restoration as like renovating a house. You can't do everything like plumbing, carpentry, electrical. Instead, you just coordinate others to do the different things. We will be just as happy to see the bus completed regardless of how it is done. You can document its progress.

HiMic !! according to my latest commentary, I`will just complete that with the following advice, The VW Factory build all those oldtimers just in one way the started with front mask and welded section by section in to the rear. So if you started with the front of your bus then you working to the rear rebuilding the bus started in the opposite way also from the rear to the front that`s the only way to do it.if you do not so you get some problems to fit the whole construction. I do hat to do it in the same way.so don't give up, in the end, you get the job done. I really do wish you all success with the restoration from Kona the Bus. Greetings from HCS Norway

The best way to handle any large project is one step at a time. You can do it and learn along the way. In the end you’ll have a great bus and a load of new skills. So stick with it you’ve got this no need to worry.

Mic, I watched the video until the end....I have to say, you are ALWAYS so positive, the ending caught me off guard, and I had to think about your dilemma for a bit before commenting. I can totally understand not wanting to just stick your dad with all of the work in repairing the bus. Might be time to just "bench" the project, and pack all of your parts inside of it if your Dad doesn't mind storing it in WA? You've got SO many parts purchased already...I'd hate to see you give up on it now. When you have the means and time, then start on the project again. OR....you've made a great friend in Vacaville. Maybe see if he can work you in to his schedule to start the metal repair? You've already done the crappy work of stripping it (and purchasing the sheet metal). You know that it would definitely get done right!!! Either way, DON'T sell it until there is absolutely no other choice.

Hey everybody gets overwhelmed this is where you stop and just look at one peace at a time like a puzzle it could take months to years to finish a VW bus there's a lot of metal to deal with. Big jobs easy to start hard to finish but the reward is worth it. Just remember one peace at a time. You can do it.

Ryan is HUGE and very keen observant while on the road trip! He's really watching out for you twos! Hehehe. Anyway, I am surprised to see the most of body, frames and floor braces still in better-than-expected condition. I would suggest making a list of what needs to be done then arrange them in priority order or in a group to do at a time. Perhaps do the larger project first then work your way to the smaller and smaller projects. For instance, getting the floor installed and prepped is probably first priority. Important: take deep breaths and relax!

Many of us are in the same boat as you. Don't feel alone. I can do everything but weld. Took many years to save up for welding on my '57 PGSG. Give your dad time to practice on some thin sheet metal. He'll get the hang of it. Metal pieces fit like a puzzle. Be there to encourage him and assist. Most of your metal sections are strait forward. Make sure the lower pillar sections and wheel arches line up. That's one of the biggest challenges. Otherwise the doors won't line up properly. You can do it!!!

You might want to look into Waxoyl (or waxoil). I know bus collectors in England who all use it to protect their busses from salty ocean air. Old cars melt FAST near the ocean. I’m in south Houston, an hour from the gulf, and you can just sit in the driveway and watch my bus deteriorate. It’s frickin’ frightening.

Thanks for telling us the story Mitch. I did watch most of those videos. The bus project will be expensive no doubt, but worth it in the end. Your choices are to do the work yourself or give it to Robert to do the metal work, so you can concentrate on fitting it out and getting it painted. Maybe even sell some of the scooters you are not using to fund some of the project. :)

FYI: old man talking here. Hawaii is paradise and fulfills your soul for the moment in terms of culture, lifestyle and peace, but I think there is a probabiity of you being a family man and will realize the virtues of Austin, Tx will far outweigh Hawaii in terms of expenses of absolutely everything, accessibility and most importantly, educational opportunities. i'm impressed!...wow, what a fun time, lots of driving ect...I love vw westfalia's. Tried to buy one here, but the man wanted $25,000 for it, even w/a trade in of my jeep which was a diesel jeep,(very rare), the car dealer would only give me $2000 off, so I said no, thank you, I don't think the man wanted to sell it that badly. Well well, first of all. (Although the moments are captured way back) congratz on moving to Hawaii! Living the dream.. And second, i've read some coments below and.. yes in my opinion you should bring it to Robert. (Easy to say ofcourse..) it may cost a bit BUT, u wont have the stress about new rust coming in a few years! I've recently seen the new series of (Hasta Alaska) i'm sure you do know about them 😏. And wauw. They also brought their hightop T2 to Robert where they did an AMAZING job! Anyway... looking forward to see what u have done with Kona :) keep that video rolling! Peace out❤

Thank you, Hawaii is doing well and happier to be here! It sucks to leave bus in mainland, not with us. Yes been thinking about Skinnner do my bus and episode 10 is up! Yeah I saw a video about ben and less took bus to Skinner, that was awesome!

That's what I felt when I did mechanic work for the first time and also when I got my first 65 23-window that was rolled. I sold it cause I was intimidated. Then I got a 57 kombi deluxe that also needed work. I had my bus club (back then) guide me what to do and I just stepped in and started cutting and welding. Was still intimidating but the first step is always the hardest. I then purchased a 65 camper. I regret selling all of them over 15 years ago. Ask a bus community online for guidance and learn things online. Then take little steps. Try repairing something small as a test and go from there. Stick to her otherwise you'll regret it as I have.

Hi Mic!! I've followed you from the first start on the Kona the bus, However, what you are showing in the last video, Starting in the wrong way with removing all those sections what was a failure.its easy to remove all these parts, its a common to do soo. I Restoring mine one VW T3 Single Cab from 1982.and was almost making the failure to there apart all that was rusty. Bud, I made some extra thoughts and decide to do not so. I started on the right side of the car. and finished the sections where rust and welded in new sections. However, I now realized it`s a long term project. So start in the right section take one at the time and so on and so on. Common is about 2 / 3 years to get the restoration done.Iàm almost done with the left side from min VW this autumn and then I can go on with the cabin. for your information, I started the restoration from mine VW in June 2016. So my don't lose your patience. I do really wish you all the success with your efforts restoring Kona the bus and look out for the next of your videos.
