Did you change the crankshaft sprocket? You mention the new chain doesn't fit original sprockets, however you seemingly just placed it over the original (11:10 in video)? I have a 2011 Polo 1.2tsi with 120k km and planning to change the still factory chain kit from older (first design) to newest and the upgrade kit comes with new crankshaft sprocket. Am a technician my self, replaced the complete timing chain kit inc oil pump chain and sprockets and i have a rattle on cold start which lasts around 2seconds and than disappear s everytime, it been like 2years done nearly 20k miles and i drive like a madman since job done and still does it lasts 2sec and disappears, as long as you get oil pressure to the tensioner within second u should be ok leave it idle for couple mins and you should be fine. this is from my xp.
@xXturbo86Xx7 ай бұрын
You probably replaced the old chain with another crappy replacement. If the end letter is not "G", then your chain is probably already failing again.
@CoreMaster1115 ай бұрын
Chain rattles on cold start because you have wrong oil filter. I have found out that Mahle and Knecht make oil filters that work great with this engine. MANN and many other filters cause chain rattle because they let oil drain out of the filter.
@vehtech96995 ай бұрын
The rattle disappeared now no more chain rattle after diagnosis I spoke to tps and they had different versions of tensioner I have asked for recently revised version for this engine I only fitted the chain tensioner as the chain was still solid and yeah rattle disappeared.

Yeah amazing! I was wondering if I needed to do it some day, I've got a Polo 1.2 TSI with 268.500kms on it. The chain has been replaced once (it runs on LPG so burns very clean, no oil dilution by petrol) - it doesn't rattle ever with starting, but it's good to know it could be cheap to fix!

Fantastic video, have it on the workbench as another reference while doing my timing chain. I have a Skoda Yeti 1.2 TSI 2010 and the tensioner that is currently on the vehicle is the larger one with the ridge on the spring loaded shaft. Skoda supplied me with a timing kit, the chain and tensioner in this kit are the other variants to what is currently on the vehicle, the kit came with new sprockets and gear as well. You say in the video to make sure the chain and tensioner are the right variant but if Skoda are suppling me with the other variant would it be right in thinking it is an upgrade to the current parts? They ordered the kit using my cars registration so surely it will be fine??
@FourRingsAuto3 жыл бұрын
Yes that's correct. It's the chain being different to the sprockets, as in the different chain won't fit the other sprocket, and the tensioner being of a different length. So if you have the whole kit with sprockets you should be fine. You can always ring them to be certain though.

Love your channel.... I have a well maintained q7 with 3.6...110k miles...should i do chains as a preventative measure...?
@FourRingsAuto4 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't hurt, they're likely somewhat stretched at this point. The 3.6 luckily can be removed out the top of the engine bay too if you don't have access to a car hoist/lift. It's usually a good chance to clean any sludge build up out of the engine too.
@xXturbo86Xx7 ай бұрын
The latest chain design for this engine, that replaces the faulty previous ones is labaled with a letter "G". If any of you is planning on doing this, make sure you get a complete kit (timing chain,cam sprocket,crack sprocket,oil pump sprocket,chain guides,bolts etc). Make sure it's the letter "G". If you don't get the "G" kit, you're just replacing the old crap with new crap and you will have the same issues. The "G" kit has a wider, beefier chain and wider sprockets as well.

Also, i have to say that these chains don't stretch because of lack of maintenance but because of faulty design. My chain was replaced under warranty on the very first oil change. Now after 65000km and even with annual oil changes, the famous "death rattle" appeared. Right on when i was expecting it, based on the feedback of many owners. It's like VW designed them to fail. They think i'm going to just give them almost 1000 euros to replaced it. Joke's on them. Thanks to your and other's istructions i'll do it myself. Looks simple enough.

Hello, this is a great video. I have a SEAT Ibiza 2014 1.2TSI CBZB 4 Door. I am trying to mimic this procedure on the same engine. I just have one question and would be grateful for any general advice. Before you insert the timing tool in the sump there is a small bracket on the back held on by the Allan bolt and one other small bolt, which I noticed you removed before bottoming out the bolt against the crank. Does that small bracket on the back definitely need to come off, as I have seen other videos where people have changed the chain without removing it. As it’s my first time doing this I am concerned that surely if I make a mistake at this crucial stage the damage may cost a small fortune. Thanks in advance

Could well be- make sure you have fresh oil (5w30 vw504/507) and that it's at a minimum halfway, preferably closer to max on the dipstick. Old/insufficient oil can result in the tensioner failing to adequately apply force at startup in my experience

You can make a special tool with aflat piece of metal bar. Drill 2 holes in it and thread 2 bolts through it so they stick out. Then use the bolts to stick through the gaps in the camshaft pulley. The locking tools for the camshaft and crankshaft are very cheap though, so I'd recommend buying them. I paid $25AUD for my kit from HCB Tools and it works great.
