How to change the oil and filter on a 2016 VW Golf Sportwagen w/ 1.8L TSI motor (EA888 R4 Petrol non-diesel). This procedure is similar for all 7th generation (Mk7) Volkswagens using the 1.8L TSI motor.
Here's a link to a list of oils available in North America that meet the VW502.00 spec.
sites.google.c...
Some brands have very similar names and weights for different oils, so be sure to read the fine print on the back of the container to determine if the oil you are buying meets or exceeds the VW502.00 spec.
The only oil I am only able to find that meets the VW502.00 spec at my local stores in Wisconsin is Mobil 1 0w-40 and Castrol Syntec 5w-40, but I suspect there's a wider variety available in Europe and beyond.
Note: The oild filter used in this video is a CA prop 65 item. When existing inventory is depleted, part HU 6013 Z is a suitable replacement.

Thanks for taking the time. I love that VW is now putting oil filters on the top! ***I wanted to add if you have a 2017 VW Alltrack , the Sportwagen's AWD cousin, you will need a 13mm socket and a T25 Torx to remove the skid plate that the Alltrack has. This video came up when I did search for changing the oil on the Alltrack.

nice short useful video, thank you. One tip. drain the oil first, then remove the filter canister. If you do the canister first and the engine was recently on, all the oil in the housing will pour all over the engine. And right below the oil filter is the serpentine belt and the alternator, you don't want to get oil on either of those. Drain the oil, then replace the filter, then plug the pan, then refill in that order.

I just changed the oil on my Golf, and your video was very helpful, because of the unfamiliar (to me) features of a BMW-style oil filter cartridge and the plastic drain plug. I drove it up my trusty Rhino ramps and bought the Schwaben drain plug tool and 32mm socket. The Schwaben tool holds the drain plug, avoiding the old problem of dropping it into the oil catch basin. By using a funnel and 1 qt oil containers (poured separately from a 5 qt jug), I found I could almost completely eliminate oil drips and spills topside. Compared to my 2001 Passat wagon (1.8T longitudinally mounted, monster oversize Purolator L40316 filter because of the undersized sump capacity), this was pretty easy.

I went to Valvoline paid 120$ for an oil changed. Left. Oil leak started happening right around the plug... Went back, they replaced plug again. Still leaking. Had my bf's papaw look at it, he tightens it. Says nothing wrong. Residual oil. Noone would listen to me. I would check the dip stick and it would be dry over night. I was constantly putting oil in. Car starts pouring oil after papaw touched it. Me, a 26 year old woman with no experience, goes to KZbin to figure out how to do it my damn self, sees your explanation on the plastic drain plug for my car, realizes everyone is over tightening it... Thank you 😊💜

Have you worked on any other car where the oil plug is in FRONT of the front wheels? I've never seen any car with this irritating quirk. I can easily change the oil on Dodges and BMWs because they're behind the front axle. It makes a MASSIVE difference in how hard it is to reach the damn plug.

@@baccusthedrunken The 'service now' message or variation thereof (e.g. Oil Service in 500 miles etc.) will continue to nag you until you reset the message...of course after performing the requisite service. Here's a link to a video on how to reset the message. Note that sometimes multiple messages could be stacked (e.g. Oil Service and general 20K inspection at the same time) although they are not displayed at the same time. Resetting one message may reveal the next message. Different messages may require slightly different reset procedures. See the description of the reset video linked below for more details. @hanoihancock
@hanoihancock 2 жыл бұрын
Some oil always remains inside the engine, so although I haven't taken a measurement of how much comes out, I'm confident it's less than the total capacity. My ramps are the plastic Pittsburg ramps from Harbor Freight and provide 6" of clearance.

I just Googled around a bit and found a few threads indicating that newer Sportwagens and Alltracks may take the 504 spec. It's confusing. I opened up a manual from a newer Alltrack and it says 502/504. I don't know if that means they are both okay, or if 502 can be used if 504 isn't available, or what.
@hixnada8278
@hixnada8278 4 жыл бұрын
hanoihancock - I know. It’s very confusing. Additionally, I’m not at all clear how a mobile 5W-30 full syn can meet spec, yet a Havoline Pro DS 5W-30 full syn doesn’t. It’s a Group III base stock full syn oil and the viscosity is equal.

koiminx, for your safety, NEVER listen to the brand or dealer if they claim their transmissions never need a fluid change/flush. It's because they don't want to do it under warranty. BMW and MINI for example will refuse to do it. I was having issues with the transmission in a MINI and the dealer refused to service it, claiming "It's a 'lifetime' fluid. You don't change it." BS. I took it to an independent BMW/MINI repair shop and they did it right there. The fluid was in very bad condition. After they filled with some Redline fluid that I bought, it was amazingly easy to shift again. Before the transmission flush, the shifter was horribly stiff and it was very hard to engage 6th gear. The issues completely disappeared after the shop did the transmission flush.
