Man, this video can't be more timely. I was just wondering about D or B mode on highway. Love how you controlled all the factors so that the comparison was unbiased. Diagnosing the bent truck was just hilarious!

Best settings for range is. Chassi: Sport Steering: dosnt matter Driving: Well B mode is the best and it saves your brakes over the long run. ACC: Eco (if you use it) Climate: Now this is though. If you lucky and have a good sealed id4 then use eco mode with no ac if its not to hot and low fan speed. If its not sealed then turn it of and use seat heat if its cold. B mode is so good that i actually have gained battery when i drived as gentle i can under 70kmh! If you think B is to aggressive then use sport mode with D. You have to be more carefull but it dont break as hard as B mode.

I would think that D mode would be better on open highway with no stops and starts. It allows the car to just cruise. B mode for everything else

I prefer D mode myself, because I find it difficult to control braking action with just B mode. It only regens so much in B mode, and although it is good regen, it still might not be enough for the braking that needs to be done so one still has to transfer the foot to the brake pedal (late). In D mode one can just transfer the foot to the brake pedal immediately (earlier) and can then control regen with the brake pedal plus get blending and actual brakes to whatever extent is required. It's that later transfer to the brake pedal in B mode that I really hate. Another reason is simply being able to rest your foot in D mode, since on the highway there are always little ups and downs where you aren't putting any pressure on at all (in situations where you aren't using cruise control). But I found something interesting out. D mode actually does do light regen. If you are in D mode and you, say, top a little hill and start going down hill with your foot off the pedal, it actually goes into very light dynamic regen if you are going over its last-detected speed limit. In comfort mode. In sport mode it does slightly heavier (but still light) regen, and more generally. Not so heavy that a vehicle behind you would be surprised. It will allow the vehicle to continue accelerating due to going downhill, just more slowly verses no-regen at all. It is still mostly coasting. I really like the mechanism. -Matt

I have an ID3 and I prefer D mode in motorway speeds. In combination with “Eco Assistance”, it reduces speed automatically with regeneration, at roundabouts and junctions. It uses information from the maps and traffic signs, at least in Europe!

The AWD ID.4's were shipped to the U.S. with 2.3, but the RWDs started shipping earlier and mostly don't have it. Of course, we are ALL waiting for 3.x that the Europeans are now starting to have access to. There are some cool features there.

We are thinking about getting one..I have had 2 bmw i3s and my wife a volt,so no stranger to ev cars..in your test You should have reset the Energy usage so we would have got a better Idea however obviously Regenerative breaking makes no sense when you're doing a constant speed in fact you want the car to drift a little bit when you take your foot off the accelerator in the city however you do want regenerative breaking you will go farther it just makes sense. And in Canada that Ford truck going down the highway we call dog leggin..when the rear axle don't line up with the front caster...

On the ID.4, there isn't an energy consumption detail. All it gives you is the miles/kwh. The Ford mach-e will tell you how much energy is going for climate, driving, accessories and exterior temp

In UK ID3 in D mode can automatically regen brake for junctions as the car knows where it is, would assume its the same in the USA. Braking for a junction should not be awkward its just using the brakes, I tend to try an keep it in the regen section if possible but as I said if you have the correct settings it should brake in D mode
@offtheshelfrides
@offtheshelfrides 2 жыл бұрын
U.S. doesn't break automatically for turnabout or intersections. We only get adaptive cruise that keeps speed with person in front of you, only Braking if it has to, to keep distance.

Great video, very informative. In the ID4, can you choose how much is regenerated in the B mode ? With my Cupra Born I can’t and that’s why on the highways I use the D mode. Because when stopping the cruise control manually, it really “brakes” hard in the B mode. Again great video, and will sure watch more of your videos. Greetzz from The Netherlands.

Welcome! Glad you enjoyed it. No, there isn't any control over the regenerative braking strength.. I do wish it did have a level adjustment. I would be nice to be able to put a light level on when doing highway/interstate driving.

Does using B mode all the time affect my motor ? Im new to electric and I am using B mode all the time, both city and freeway- B mode is like holding the transmission on higher rpm before it upshift to higher gear.... im not worry on range or regeneration braking. I get free charging near my house - electrify America..

No it does not harm your motors at all. Most EV owners drive with regenerative Braking all the time.

Question what effect does driving in B mode have any effect on brake wear?
@offtheshelfrides
@offtheshelfrides Жыл бұрын
None. Regenerative Braking does not actually use the brakes. Even when pressing the brake pedal, you have to push more than halfway down before it actually engages the brake pads

In B it was 2.8 and in B it was 2.9. What did i miss? Only on interstate lower?
@offtheshelfrides
@offtheshelfrides 2 жыл бұрын
In B mode it was 2.8, then D was 2.9, same trip and distance. D was very slightly more efficient. There for more range compared to B mode. If done over a longer distance, we would have seen a larger gap than just .1 Over the course of the entire battery charge, I think we would have seen 3.2 or so

Do Driving in comfort mode =No regeneration?
@offtheshelfrides
@offtheshelfrides Жыл бұрын
All drive modes have regen. Sport is strongest, Comfort is normal, eco is softest. D is more like a ICE car, you coast with very little regen until you press the brakes - then regen is engaged but doesn't not use friction brakes unless pressed very hard. B = regen/1 pedal driving but doesn't bring you to a complete stop. 2 mph then press brake pedal to stop
