Now that Tom has over 150,000 subscribers, the weather comes to him. On the subject of snow, a sizeable and very persistent percentage of drivers here in Canada refuse to adapt driving techniques to foul weather. I cannot imagine the level of 'adventure' on roadways in places where snowfall is rare.

Great review! Thank you. I’m not an EV fan, but Audi’s version of this car, the Q4 e-tron, looks perfect for me. I assume it will handle the same. I live on the Canadian prairies, and an EV may be best for cold winters - that instant heat, no freezing cold, thick oil on start up. Currently in an Audi A3 quattro, so I’d be giving up handling and driving fun, but might be worth it. Thanks again. 👍

Great review as always, Tom. I must admit enjoying watching your struggles in the snow when you returned from Hawaii. You appear to have been hit harder in Seattle than we experienced in the South Sound but it was a challenge all over the Puget Sound area last week. As far as the ID.4 is concerned, VW is obviously aiming at more mainstream consumer for their EVs than some other automakers. The appeal of longer range EVs (250+ miles) is still limited to relatively affluent consumers and those with the ability to charge their vehicles at home. (Sorry, apartment dwellers and non-home owners.) But with the proliferation of public charging stations and a driving experience not too different from a familiar ICE or hybrid car coupled with a purchase price that doesn't exact a burden equivalent to a luxury vehicle VW is hoping to carve a niche for their relatively roomy compact CUV. As long as the federal tax credit holds for VW, it seems like a good bet.

In northern Germany there is often a mixture of snow and rain. So usually salt or sand/gravel is used. Very bad for any vehicle. And you can almost never enjoy a ride on a snow covered road. Vintage cars even often get imported from Scandinavia, where they don't use salt and spikes are allowed. Those cars are in far better condition.

I'm considering my first EV purchase and was originally thinking of the IONIQ 5 but with the recent energy bill that was passed, the $7500 tax credit no longer applies to the Hyundai, so I'm waiting to see how the Chattanooga built ID.4's pans out for the 2023 model years and their eligibility for the tax credit under the criteria that it needs (e.g. domestic manufacturing, battery, and minerals).

We have one on order. No one ever told me before that each free Electrify America "session" is limited to just 30 minutes. Not even sure what that means? I don't like the sound of it. The free 3 years was one of the big selling points for us. So If we're on a road trip and need to fill from 5% to 100% it just turns off or starts to charge money? Does this mean we can't walk away and do some shopping or go to a restaurant in the meantime? If we decide to stick around can I unplug after 30 minutes and just restart the 30 minute process all over again for free? This all sounds like a really bad idea. Not happy with VW right now.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Personally, I wouldn't sweat it. At 150kWh stations, your car should be well charged after 30 minutes, more than likely around 80%. After that, charging speed drops dramatically to protect the battery, similar to all EVs. 30 minute sessions keep people from camping out for a long time, that keeps others from charging. Also, while traveling, it's more efficient time wise to "work the bottom of the battery". In other words, charge to 80% (the point where it starts throttling down dramatically), then drive to the next station with a low battery and repeat. You'll actually save time that way. Don't know if unplugging and starting a new session will get you another 30 minute immediately though. I was able to get my grocery shopping done in under 30 minutes without trying FYI.

My Audi A6 has rear cross traffic alert. It will stop the car as you are backing up if someone you didn't see comes along. I have had it engage and it is unnerving! It doesn't just apply the brakes, it does a FULL STOP. Of course you aren't going that fast but it still scares the crap out of you. Audi Pre-Sense will engage if it thinks a collision (going forward) is likely, but it gives you a second to get your foot on the brake to avert. I haven't had the brakes engage but it would no doubt be a freak out experience.

Thanks for the great review Tom - very interested in the snow driving capability. I have a comment regarding ground clearance. I have read different figures in different places for ID.4. I have an AWD with 20" wheels that is built and in transit, but don't have it yet, so I went to a dealer in California and borrowed a tape measure and measured a Pro S, RWD, and it was 8". Not sure if the wheels were 19" or 20", with the larger tire possibly adding .5" to the ground clearance. AWD is supposed to add another half inch over the RWD model. So I think 6.8" as mentioned in the video is not correct. I also queried the community in the Forum on Insideev's, and got this reply about an RWD: I just picked up my ID.4 Pro yesterday. 19 inch wheels. Just measured - looks like 8.25 inches to me. There is a small plastic bump out in front of the tires which brings that down to 7 at each tire. Personally, I am happy with that. I ran a VW bug, then Rabbit, then Golf, all over creation with less.

I'll go with VWoA's official specs which is the same for both wheel sizes. Only AWD made a difference. Quite possibly, it's factoring something unseen like a chassis dip or suspension component. Enjoy the car!

Tire size doesn’t affect ground clearance since the sidewall gets smaller on the larger wheel size. 😉 of course you can get oversized aftermarket tires but from the factory, the total diameter is pretty much the same regardless of wheel size.

@kens97sto171
@kens97sto171 2 жыл бұрын
Probably because mechanically it doesn't function the same way. They're for motion all wheel drive system is mechanical has differentials that can move power around. With an electric drive train you've got a motor in the back and a motor in the front and the only thing controlling where power goes is application of brake power. So if the right rear wheel starts to slip it applies the brake which will send the power to the other side. I believe the four motion system is more robust mechanically, and more reactive. A lot of times these brake controlled all-wheel drive systems are limited and how much torque they can shift from one side to the other. Also how quickly they react.

@@DrivenCarReviews yes you have and I’m eternally grateful. Since you gave it a glowing review I knew I could look for it when it came time to buy. Many of the people in the RAV4 Prime group are interested in BEV’S and cars in general so I’m happy to recommend someone I trust.

I live in the Seattle area and wanted to get the rear wheel drive 24 id4 but the sales guy said they only sell the awd on the westcoast. I don't need awd so I passed on it plus the awd gets less range

"Nine packs of Costco TP." Nice. Is that the North American version of the Banana Box Test? Great to see a review in the snow. Answered all my questions including 'would I get the Moonstone Grey?'

Not sure what the Banana Box test but yeah, sounds similar. I just think TP is inherently more humorous.

The green lights reflecting off of the car at 19:24 is a really cool looking shot. I just reserved an ID4 AWD and I’m really looking forward to it. It’s not going to beat a sports car in the 1/4 mile, but it’s quick enough that it’s not boring, and it’ll beat any minivan to the next stop light. I’m annoyed that the Canadian spec car gets a heat pump and we don’t though. When the Q4 e-tron makes it to dealer lots I’m going to test drive one, it’s not that much more expensive really, but I think ID4’s less luxurious interior may be a better fit for my two young children and the messes they still make.

One thing in the specs about the heat pump is that it saves energy between freezing and 15C/65F or so. And given the issues Teslas are having with theirs, I don’t think I would want one in the Mid West. The most important thing with an EV in winter is to keep it charged up. The battery draws energy to stay at a minimum ambient temperature when not running, and has to heat up to allow big draws, so efficiency takes a hit and preconditioning the car and battery makes a difference. Naysayers love to point at this an an EVs weakness, forgetting that you can charge at home if you have a plug, and it costs less than $10.

@@davidcottrell570 You may be right, but I really like the heat pump in my Leaf out here in the Pacific Northwest. That said, with large battery in the ID4 I’m not too worried about it. Like you say, I can precondition the car and battery before I leave.

I thought hard about the ID4 AWD because it's such awesome value for money and the practicality is off the charts. There are some things about the car, like the weird capacitive buttons, which would be mildly infuriating over time. Overall, it's a great family EV SUV but one that lacks any sort of passion.

VW needs to seriously reconsider the UIX and controls in the ID cars. You can't change a lot of settings when on the move, such as disabling/enabling lane keep assist, etc.
