This video shows the removal and replacement of a camshaft, belt driven coolant pump and thermostat housing. The pump was replaced on a Volkswagen Polo, however this pump is also fitted on several different models that use this engine or variant of this pump.
Sorry for the poor sound quality, i had to remove several sections for customers privacy.
Thanks for watching the video and if it helps in anyway and you would care to support me by leaving a one off tip then please follow the link below.

Ah man! Sorry to hear that, glad it all went well though. I think due to my low subscriber count and video views I get pushed down in the search results.

So it's a straightforward job... no need to lock the camshaft pulley or anything :)
@ford873
@ford873 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah i think its a pretty straight forward job. There might actually be a variation that you need to lock the camshaft with a tool. The water pump pulley has no timing marks, so its not for this reason.

Thanks for a great video! I have replaced my pump using this video. I tried putting as much tension on the belt as I could buy it was still had 20mm of belt deflection. Is this too loose and belt also needs replacing?

sorry to bother you. I have a skoda octavia mk 3 1.4 tsi. The water pump is leaking and looks exactly like the one in your video. I have a good set of tools so swapping the pump should be ok. But i dont have any tools to bleed the system after. Would i get away with topping up the expansion tank and squeezing the hoses etc. Great video by the way.

Nice video, thanks for sharing. Is it completely necessary to remove the induction accessories to get access to the side of the block/bolts holding on the pump/thermostat assembly??

You might be able to work around it, but the simplicity of removing it makes the job so much easier I can’t see a reason why you would leave it in place.

Great video mate, I just want ask, where do you find the coolant temperature sensor on that polo? I have been searching for it and the ones on the internet suggest that it is located on the thermostat housing, but it's not.
@ford873
@ford873 2 жыл бұрын
There is two coolant sensors on that engine. G83 is located in the coolant hose at the bottom of the radiator. G62 is located at the rear of the engine. Its a bit hard to see from the top and to get to it from below you really need to remove the driveshaft shield.
@thabomkhwebane1934
@thabomkhwebane1934 2 жыл бұрын
@@ford873 Thank you very much. I got the G62. It is easier to get to after removing the water pump. The G83 is not in the coolant hose, instead I found it on the radiator, just above that coolant hose.

I have a leaking pump and need to change it. You video is excellent, but you do not state the torque wrench settings for the mounting bolts. Your torque wrench showed a setting of around 10-11 when it beeped. I am assuming Nm. Can you advise please. Thanks for your help.
@ford873
@ford873 3 жыл бұрын
I’m not really a fan of posting Torque settings if I can help it. The pump is fitted to various makes and models and the setting can vary significantly across the board . Manufacturers may also amend them in the future. It’s always best to check the most up to date information when carrying out a repair. I always just call a main dealer and ask if I need torque settings and have never been refused the information yet.

good video, im looking to change the coolant on my seat ibiza 1.4 tsi think its the same engine as this, as it hasnt been changed since ive had the car and its about 6 years old, any tips on what is the best way to flush it out from the engine block as im not planning on touching the water pump or thermostat.
@ford873
@ford873 3 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, unless you have a specific reason for needing to change it, I would not go to the effort. VW don't give a recommended interval change, they only advise checking the strength and adjusting by adding either neat coolant to strengthen or ionised water to dilute. So unless your coolant is discoloured or the vehicle has overheated at some point I would leave as is.

Quick question (I dont know anything about cars so I apologise if this is a stupid question) - are the coolant pump and thermostat housing 2 separate components? or is the thermostat housing within the coolant pump?
@ford873
@ford873 3 жыл бұрын
Usually they are two separate things. However on this vehicle they both make up the one unit. What issue are you having?

Any trick to get all air out of the syytem, i cant make circulating the fluid, on my tsi 1,2, after repair all coolers new, same motor, mabythe wp is damaged ?
@ford873
@ford873 4 жыл бұрын
I would always advise the use of a vacuum bleeder on the cooling system. The cooling systems are far more advanced these days and its much harder to bleed the cooling system properly just by running the vehicle up while stationary. If the coolant is not circulating, without looking at the vehicle it would be hard to diagnose 100% but the water pump certainly would be an option.

It really does depend on the make and model, it can vary a lot. Just give your main dealer a call and they will gladly help you out over phone and give you the correct one for your vehicle.

How much will cost for replacement and parts together around?
@ford873
@ford873 4 жыл бұрын
This would change greatly depending on your location, engine type and if your changing the associated parts. I would contact your local dealer and ask them. Genuine parts have a two year warranty. Factor parts generally only have one year.

Hello, could I ask what the symptoms of the car were before you changed the water pump?
@ford873
@ford873 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah of course you can. The only symptons this vehicle had was the coolant warning light on the dash. The pump was still working, so it wasnt overheating. It just had a minor leak that overtime dropped the coolant level enough to put the warning light on. What issues are you having?
@dmswallowuk
@dmswallowuk 4 жыл бұрын
@@ford873 exactly the same, the coolant is dropping and triggering the dash warning and the casing of the water pump has dried pink coolant all around it. It all started when the 2 large hoses between the pump and the radiator got a leak from the gearbox counter weight thing rubbing on them. I replaced the hoses and put new coolant in. Since then the engine was running hot (oil reaching over 100c on the motorway sometimes) I thought there must have been a large air bubble somewhere maybe? Since all of this has happened the air con doesn't work (always worked before) and the radiator fan never comes on? so I think the water pump maybe isn't working at all? Ive just bought a new gates water pump kit, been putting it off but your video has given me some motivation to fix it. I might need to change the thermostat too im thinking? but not sure where it is located. Wish me luck lol!
@ford873
@ford873 4 жыл бұрын
If you already had a coolant leak, air in the system could definitely be a possibility. These are particularly hard to bleed without using a vacuum bleeder. I've not seen the actual pump fail or a belt snap to stop coolant circulating. Its more likely, like you already said that its an airlock, the thermostat isn't opening, the coolant temp switch isn't reading correctly or the fan has failed. The thermostat is part of the water pump and built into the housing, so this will be replaced when you change the water pump. The temp switch is easy to check by looking at the measured values / live data if you have access to any sort of diagnostic machine. The fan failing does sound very likely as well, considering the aircon doesn't work. The original leak you had would have occured right by the fan and could have been covered in coolant causing it to fail. If the car has also overheated, it can cause the plastic housings to distort causing the additional leaks you now have.

Thank you for the information, really appreciate it. whereabouts are you located? if your not far from Northampton I might bring it to you! save myself some troubleshooting!
@ford873
@ford873 4 жыл бұрын
I am quite a distance from Northampton otherwise i could have helped, for obvious reasons i don't really fancy giving out my exact location on here lol If your not sure you can take the job on, don't be scared of main dealers, yes you pay a higher hourly rate than most back street garages, but they see all the common faults, have all the tools and can usually diagnose and repair the fault in half the time and you get a two year warranty on genuine parts. You can also quite often get VW to pay a contribution even if your out of warranty. The odds of this are greatly increased if you have a service history with the dealer though.
