VW T5 2.5 TDI AXD - How To Do Oil Service And Filter Change DIY

In this video, I provide an in-depth how-to guide covering the oil and filter change on a VW Transporter van. Modle 2005 AXD 2.5TDI
This may differ greatly depending on the age of the van in question, I believe this one is tricker than most!

506.1 OIL... I find it nearly impossible to source the 506.1-grade oil for VW now, one of the only supplies I can find in the UK is Millers. It says 506.1 on the bottle anyway. Please double-check this is the right oil for your engine (older AXDs only) and I'm not 100% on the quality so do some research first - www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...

Great video Dan, thank you. I’ve just replaced mine and like Charlie the Chippy I too have a 32mm socket and just enough room to get a ratchet in there. I also changed the air filter and so decided to leave the top casing and filter off which afforded me even more room. 👍🏻 All in, it took me about 1.5hrs but that was during twilight hours and so I needed a torch in my mouth to see what I was doing. Whilst in the engine bay, I decided to unclip the hoses on the right hand side (as you look in) and clean them off too as they were leaking a bit of oil. So far and fingers crossed it stays that way, jobs a good ‘un and she runs smoother and quieter, being the 2.5L AXD motor. Cheers, Andi

Andrew Brooks Thanks guys. Surprised we have 32 and 36mm's must be a different version of the filter carrier. Also gotta watch the oil filters. I have suppliers send me the same part number filter in 2 different overall lengths!

Excellent video..thanks..it has reminded me again of how awkward this oil filter is to remove. I have just bought VW Quantum Longlife 2 0w30 Oil 506.1 from Ceautomotive in Shrewsbury ( a VW specialist, they advertise on ebay as well as having their own website and are extremely knowledgable and approachable)...Interestingly last year I contacted Castrol technical division over choice of oil and have copied below their response, this was after discussing the requirements in depth for the AXD 96kW 2.5l engine without DPF and it's specified VW 506.01 oil requirement....this is what they said "....Please note that 'Castrol Edge 5W-30 LL' with VW 507.00 oil is suitable for your automobile and can be used without any hesitation...." I personally do not know what to think..but am changing to the Quantum oil above this year...I have read that there is an oil parameter to do with 'oil shear' which needs to be high to protect cam followers and other components in this PD engine and this is not high enough in 507.00 oil....

great video mate, just completed after getting confidence from it. Mine was a 32mm nut on the oil filter. I didnt have to remove the hose, just the reservoir, still a tight squeeze though.

I have exact same engine but mine uses a 32socket for the filter and the engine oil capacity is only 7.5 litres. Thanks for the info though re the steering oil and cooler pipe .mine also had space for single socket and 3/8 ratchet.. cheers . Saved a few quid

Nice work Dan. Can’t believe the location of the oil filter. Happy to see the fuel filter is a lot easier to sort. I’ve never tried to change oil, or any filters before, but I’m feeling a bit poor at the moment - so I think I’ll have a go 🙈

Good luck with it! First time is a royal pita, but with practice youll wonder why you havent attempted em before! Saves loads on what the garages charge. Please research which oil your engine needs as there are conflicking recomendations out there

Dan Sohan thanks Dan, not sure whether I might be wimping out for this service, maybe next time I’ll have a go, no worries doing the air filter, but not the oil filter lol. £335 ex vat. That was oil ( Mobil 1. I think Mobil 3000 is the one for the 506.01 oil mine needs being a 2004 pre DPF 2.5 AXD Transporter T5. So they quoted oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter and the fuel filter.. the only difficult thing is the oil filter really isn’t it, and maybe getting given the wrong fuel filter ( two prong or 4 prong version by a car parts place ) I think it’s a two prong on an AXD ?

I contacted a independent Vw specialist today with my reg number and he said the AXD engine should have 0 - W30 long life oil Great video tho mate 👍🏻

Thanks for the great video! I was able to get the oil filter out without having to remove other bits, thankfully. It's hard to know exactly what oil goes into any engine. I have been told by several sources that it makes next to no difference but 504/507 is the right one for this one.

Ive been told 506.1 only :) i just mix 505 506 and 507.. im hopefully 33 percent right!

Only 0il recommend is 506.01 because of its contents of ashes which are responsible for protecting the inner cylinder walls and the "Nockenwelle" .

Nice video. You make it. Look easy. I had my done few months ago, but have oil leak at the back of the sump. Think it could that the filter wasn't put on properly and bits of oil being blown to the back. But i will follow your instructions. Thank you

if you have oil from the rear of the engine, it could be the Turbo to Engine block gasket is leaking. It's difficult to get to :(

Very well made video. Extremely clear sound and film. Did the oil level change on start up when the filter housing filled up? Also did you need to extinguish the service reminder that appears when on start up?

I did add a little. In fact the engine drinks a litre a month. Holding ñearly 8 litres odd the amount in the filter is small. Resetting the service light means having vcds or vag com. Its easily done but not covered as its kind of specialized equipment unless you find a cheap 2nd hand one somewhere

Hi, yea I believe it is. Will be a pain to get there, sure its not the water pump. Can let the 2 mix and much easier to get to. But does require the pulling tool set.

Yes there are different versions. Mine was a 36mm too. I believe there are 32mm ones as well -Pretty easy to get a tape measure down there just to check.

I'm afraid you need a data cable and software or find a garage with a diagnostic computer.

It is. I have spares in stock but I've always used the same ones if they are in good condition. Just form a seal on the threads with gasket maker

Why would you put sealer on the intercooler charge pipe? its the turbo that needs attention, you have an oil leak insie the turbo. Where do you think the oil is comming from.

The oil was coming from the crank case, due to blow by from the nackered cylinder. Swapped turbo, made no difference. Your right, shouldn't put sealer on those connections, but they were all worn and the seals had failed. Replaced them all in the end.

It can be done more easily if you take off the front right wheel, the plastic cover above it and then you can get to the oil filter very easily !!! without having to disassemble everything above it. :)

Thanks for the advice, but I feel taking the front wheel off and pulling that plastic is even more hassle. It's not too bad going in from the top after the first attempt. Luckily I don't have to do it anymore. have a ford and its a 5min job now.

Good video, except the silly mistake of not actually turning the engine over to fill up the new oil filter and THEN measure the oil level...with a new filter you are likely still missing at least 0.5l of oil when putting in only 7.2l!

Nah, its fine. But yes always check the oil again after a short run. To be honest these VW throw so much oil out everywhere, 0.5L in a filter is not going to make much difference. Dirty old engines as they are. Even ones less than 5 years old tend to lose oil, either burning it, leaked through a cooler or weeping it from somewhere.

13:20 you suggest to change the oil with cold engine (!) (or just a Little warm) to avoid to burn the finger :-) ? Are you serious? Oilchange MUST ALLWAYS be done with hot oil. If not the oil cannot flow out properly. About finger, with a Little practice you can take out the screw without get dirty at all. /// For the rest was good content and advice.

Always do it warm.. if too hot you could crack the block in half when putting the new cold oil in. Or cause the head and the block to contract at different rates and cause a head gasket failure.

People get very anal about vw oil , I worked for vw and they used shell helix 5/30 for the t5 , although some on here will argue this , I’ve also ran my own t5 1.9 for 12 years on 5/30 without any issues , vw were very secretly about their oils and what they used , but when the t5 came out in 2003 they used 5/30 shell helix ,
