What subwoofer was it built for? Wouldn’t the design and length changed based on the differences in 12 inch subs for example a top of the line Sundown vs a cheap Boss?

Works well with GRS 12SW-4HE and Power Acoustik GW-124 and likely many other drivers with similar general specifications. Strong motor force, high(ish) Qes, ample excursion will all help, of course. Also don't use a driver with too high of a total Q like 0.5x would be high for this box I tried this with a cheap polycone "subwoofer" "woofer" driver and it did not do well.

Horns are >than all but all Sundowns and lots of subs aren't great for horns either. There are better custom options and subs that can take advantage of a horn. If the manufacturer doesn't offer an option to design one than they won't know and theirs likely isn't one to use

Do you think rounding the edges and painting would change sound quality

Rounding the edges at the opening of the horn would change sound by an imperceptible amount, but still some. Otherwise rounded edges and paint are basically all cosmetic.
