Flowing concrete involves placing and #finishing concrete in a way that ensures it fills the forms properly and achieves a smooth, even surface. Here are the steps to flow concrete effectively:
Materials and Tools Needed:
- Concrete mix
- Water
- Concrete mixer or mixing tools
- Wheelbarrow or bucket (for transporting concrete)
- Shovels
- Trowels
- Screed board (a straightedge tool)
- Bull float
- Edger
- Jointer (groover)
- Concrete broom (for finishing)
- Protective gear (gloves, boots, goggles)
Steps:
1. **Preparation**:
- **Prepare the Site**: Ensure the area where the concrete will be poured is clean, leveled, and free of debris. Install forms to hold the concrete in place.
- **Sub-base Preparation**: Lay a compacted sub-base (usually gravel) to provide a stable foundation for the concrete.
2. **Mixing the Concrete**:
- **Proportioning**: Measure the ingredients (cement, sand, gravel, and water) according to the mix design.
- **Mixing**: Combine the materials in a concrete mixer. If using a pre-mixed bag, follow the instructions for water addition. Mix until you achieve a uniform consistency.
3. **Pouring the Concrete**:
- **Transport the Concrete**: Use a wheelbarrow or bucket to transport the mixed concrete to the site.
- **Placing the Concrete**: Pour the concrete into the forms, starting from the farthest point and working your way back. Spread the concrete evenly using shovels.
4. **Compacting the Concrete**:
- **Vibration**: Use a concrete vibrator to remove air pockets and ensure the concrete fills all spaces within the forms. If you don’t have a vibrator, tap the sides of the forms with a hammer to help settle the concrete.
5. **Screeding**:
- **Leveling**: Use a screed board to level the concrete. Move the board back and forth in a sawing motion across the top of the forms to remove excess concrete and ensure a smooth surface.
6. **Floating**:
- **Initial Floating**: Use a bull float to smooth the surface. This helps to embed aggregate and fill voids. Perform this step after the concrete has lost its sheen but before it sets.
7. **Edging and Jointing**:
- **Edging**: Use an edger to round the edges of the slab to prevent chipping.
- **Jointing**: Create control joints using a jointer tool to help control cracking. These should be placed at intervals roughly equal to the slab's thickness in feet.
8. **Troweling**:
- **Finishing**: After the initial set, use a trowel for a smooth finish. For a very smooth surface, use a steel trowel. For a non-slip surface, consider a broom finish by dragging a concrete broom across the surface.
9. **Curing**:
- **Curing**: Keep the concrete moist to prevent rapid drying, which can cause cracking. Cover with plastic sheeting or use a curing compound. Curing typically lasts at least 7 days, with the concrete gaining strength over time.
10:
Cleaning Tools-Clean all tools and equipment promptly before the concrete hardens.
- **Remove Forms**: After the concrete has cured sufficiently, carefully remove the forms.
By following these steps and paying attention to detail, you can ensure the concrete flows well and achieves a smooth, durable finish.
