I never stopped to think about the isometric view and how it helped lower the work it took to make all these sprite animations. Would still be nice to have this level of quality in a 4-directional mainline game with all features. Or a hack/fangame since that's actually more likely.

The best part of the spin offs like this and colosseum is that TPC didn’t have much to do with them. That’s why colosseum has so many unique and amazing animations. The personality of these games shined because they gave a damn.

Those games are actually connected to the main series through lore and through pokemon transfers so not much of a spin-off of pokemon just a different style in different regions of the pokemon universe

Every game that isn't a mainline pokemon game did Pokemon immersion better and I feel like those games are the reason we are all so immersed in the franchise as a whole. It feels like the main games just show us a blank reminder of what pokemon we like and we all think about every instance of that pokemon that isnt the one right in front of us. Anime as well, actually.

Never bothered with any of the side games except Gale Of Darkness (terrific game). The best title to date, in my honest opinion, is Emerald. There’s nothing like it. Even with its resemblance to other titles, it was mind blowingly great. Even the remakes of Ruby and Sapphire were weak by comparison, they just didn’t have it. I haven’t bothered (long-term) with any of the mainline since. It’s all seemed pretty rubbish. If they go back to the GBA style of game, I’ll pick it up, not really interested in anything else frankly. There are so many entirely original gba rom hacks at this point, there’s no reason at all for me to pick up a new official title they make when I know it will be inferior in my eyes.

Pokemon Ranger was great in many ways. The idea of a certain kind of pokemon being useful for evoirement interactions instead of HMs would have been great in the main line. Instead of surf becoming a random sprite, the few pokemon you could ride on the water (empoleon and floatzel in 2) had their unique sprites. The DS era was peak pokemon, both main line and spinoffs.

The Ranger games was probably the first hard challenge I experienced in the Pokemon franchise. It took me HOURS and/or DAYS to finally beat Entei, Suicune, and Raikou. I never got to finish the post endgame before my save got corrupted :( The fact that you didn't have a chance to save in between fights made it especially tough.

Shadows of Almia and Guardian Signs have even better graphics! In Guardian Signs, you can even fly on your Staraptor or Lati@s and ride the three Legendary Beasts. The graphics were so good back then! It proves how good a Pokémon game could look with an Octopath Traveler/ Dragon Quest III remake style.
