Wait! Watch this video before painting vinyl siding!

Not all painters are created equal. A lot of painters don't understand that in order to paint vinyl siding they MUST use a vinyl safe paint with vinyl safe colorants. This one client of ours had a previous painter paint their home without vinyl safe paint and colorants and all the vinyl siding warped. Hiring the wrong painter can cost you dearly in the long run.

@@renaissancemaneric8019, I prefer to spray over brushing. You can get a more consistent coating with that. You do have to watch for lap marks when you spray. Once we spray a section I like to give it a lite dusting to ensure it feathers in. If you decide to brush, I would suggest you brush the underside of the lap siding and use a mini roller on the wider parts. If you are changing colors you will need to do 2 coats for proper coverage and protection.

I painted 40 year old siding that had some warping just from age and heat I assume . I watched many videos of professionals such as yourself and they all say the same thing . I followed all the rules and it is two years old now and is holding up very well .I grew up in a wood and brick house and the wood had to be scraped stained then rubbed . This is allot easier , Lol

You can still choose a darker color but just make sure you use the vinyl safe paint with vinyl safe colorant. I painted my vinyl siding with sw Raycroft pewter and used vinyl safe colorants and I've had no issues.

Yes you can. Make sure the paint you get is a paint and primer together so it will help cover the eggplant color in 2 coats

Excellent video! I am doing a re-siding job for a client right now who painted their white siding almost completely black. They are now suing the painting company which I told the customer was probably not their fault. I figured it had more to do with how the siding was hung to begin with maybe nailed down to tide and the warping occurred since then either way the house looks terrible and Hass to be recited. I guess ultimately it comes down to the experience of the painter who in this case hasn’t had this experience before as they go forward they will be able to advise customers what not to do but in this case it cost them $15,000 in lost revenue and potentially legal fees.

Painting is one of those professions that is easy to get into but takes years to really learn. Of course you have to have a willingness to learn the proper method of painting and understand the products you are using and why. Unfortunately, a lot of painters don't and are willing to paint anything in hopes that it will last and look good.

My daughter and her husband bought a house in Chicago. The white vinyl siding was nailed tight and they decided to paint it a dark gray. What a mess!! I am in the process of tearing it all the off a residing it 😱 some people shouldn’t be allowed near and kind of tool 🤪

I would recommend going to Sherwin Williams and telling them you are going to paint vinyl. The 2 issues would be a paint that can adhere to vinyl and the 2nd is any use of the black colorant. You want to avoid the black colorant at all cost. That will cost the siding to warp. I hope that helps.

I personally like Sherwin williams resilience or emerald line as a vinyl safe paint. Make sure you tell them it is going on vinyl because if your white leans to the gray a little bit they would natural add black, which is the colorant you want to avoid. Spraying is also the recommend method for painting vinyl siding. Just make sure you wash it real good first. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Unfortunately you need to replace the siding. Once it warps it can't go back.

You can go darker but to do dark colors they need to eliminate the black colorant and replace it with blue. I would go to Sherwin-Williams and use the Resilience line of paint and tell them it is going on vinyl. They will reformulate the color for you. Do a test color first to make sure it is the right tone for you.

Hi I watched another video where it said that in the winter of course the siding will expand for up to half an inch. Then it will show the old color of that half inch. So is it better to wait until it expands? Hope this wasn't a stupid question. Thank you

Great question! Yes, the siding does move and exposes areas that were not painted. What I offer my clients in one free touch up in the Fall. We want the temps to be in the 40s to 50s during the day for the touch up. Now, painting in the Fall or in summer won't always catch extreme movement that you may see in the middle of winter. Typically early spring you're going to be able to do a touch up as well at the seams. I hope this helps!

Aura is a great product. Very solid and would work on vinyl. Benjamin Moore dealers don't have the term "vinyl safe colorants" like sherwin williams but they do understand it when you tell them. Mainly you want to avoid any black colorants.

I would go to Sherwin Williams and pick the red color and let them know you want it in a vinyl safe colorants and paint. They will check the formula and a value of how close to the original color they can get. You should be able to get pretty close

No it doesn't, any airless will work fine. The main thing to remember is vinyl safe with vinyl safe colorants.

There would be no problem painting it white. Some off-whites would use the black colorant so I would let the paint store know so they can use a vinyl safe formula.

You may use a premium line from Sherwin Williams and let them know you are painting it on vinyl so that they put it in a vinyl safe formula.

You do not need to seal or prime the surface first. You MUST clean the siding though. You need to get off all the surface containments such as pollen, dust, etc. Power washing is the quickest method. I would use a cleaning solution on it and then wash it off. There's a couple products like 30 second clean and a lot of painters mix water, bleach, TSP. But the important thing is to clean before you paint.

Take a look at Sherwin Williams and ask to look at vinyl safe colors. They have a booklet with colors but they can also mix a lot of other colors into a vinyl safe. I personally use the Latitude line from Sherwin Williams.

I would use Sherwin Williams Latitude paint in a Satin sheen. Tell them that you are putting it on vinyl siding so you need the vinyl safe formula. That color should be easy for them to do

@gregory4247 yes that's possible but if it for your home or garage I would recommend a roof coating system like Kool Seal or an elastomeric system like that. If you use cheaper items you will deal with peeling for many many years and a lot of headaches.

Unfortunately, there is no coming back from it. Once the vinyl has warped you would have to replace it.

I would still use a vinyl safe paint even though the vinyl is thicker. You just don't want to risk it failing because the cost to replace all those are too much.

If you paint over them with a sprayer at the correct mils of paint then it doesn't clog the air holed. Same with the soffit. If you paint too heavy, that's when you have too many problems with air flow and potential peeling

A high quality behr paint will adhere but the most important part is the colorants used to get to the color. Ask if they have vinyl safe formulas. If they don't know what you are talking about then go to Sherwin Williams to ensure your siding doesn't warp.

okay so if it is dark paint then why did the light paint color warp it? ACTUALLY I believe the warping is just cheap siding. How and why do I believe this. Because my last home was new construction and a light taupe color and it warp in year one with no paint on it. Cheaper builder grade vinyl siding warps period. But those that disagree call and support your local painter...he needs the work. Another reason for warping is poor installation technique. Put on too tight etc.

Yes there are other factors that warp siding but this video is specifically about painting vinyl siding and the right and wrong ways of doing it. Also it's more specifically about the colorants used and type of paint for that substrate.
