And to state the obvious: We're emphatically NOT suggesting ANYONE go out and try to race the police! This is just a fun drag race to show how quick the new Prius Prime actually is, and no one should ever go out and try to emulate this in real life (or drag race on the streets, either. If you're going to drag race, take it to a proper drag strip!).

Seriously doubt it. A 16 second quarter mile is not fast. A 24 Camry is sub 14 second. This is a misleading video. And I doubt this video will cause a high demand for the Prime. Because most likely where you drive - unless you too are at high altitudes...you will be passed by Camrys and Civis all day long. And even at high altitudes, they probably will still pass you if they have a turbo.

I am not sure you have ever really used a hybrid for a long period of time. The fastest way to get a hybrid to its max speed is not to put it in sport mode and floor it. The fastest way is to put the accelerator down about 25% immediately and then slowly continue to accelerate to the floor over the next few seconds. It takes a while for the CVT transmission to compensate and by going to 25% and then slowly accelerating, it maintains the better gear ratio combined with the battery providing full power. The curve of the speed is noticeably different. Try it, you will like it.

I think it is a good thing Toyota is taking advantage of the acceleration benefits from hybrid power, but Nathan's observation on steering feel confirm that Toyota is still more about comfort, reliability, and efficiency than performance. Putting sleeker, sportier styling on the Prius makes it easier to look at, but not necessarily more desirable for a driver who is an enthusiast. The latest Prius is also uncomfortably unusable for drivers with taller torsos.

It's interesting because most reviews laud the new, 5th gen Prius for having much better steering and has been a hell of a handler.
@DuaneCaldwell
@DuaneCaldwell Жыл бұрын
Being better at handling than the first 4 generations is commendable, but hardly a ringing endorsement of sporting achievement. The bar was set pretty low by those earlier generations of Prius. I haven't driven the 4th or 5th gen Prius, but I was underwhelmed by my drives in the first 3.
@nf1369
@nf1369 Жыл бұрын
@@DuaneCaldwell Jason Cammisa is just one person, but he was raving about how well the Prius is balanced. Other reviewers followed suit once they drove the Prius too. It's a REALLY great driving car. The 4th generation was also pretty decent (was the first Toyota on the TNGA platform). Sure it was butt ugly and slow, but it handled well in the corners. The new one solves the power problem, but also loves to carve corners too.

Alright, something isn't adding up, right boys? The Prius is a 15 second quarter mile car - which, let's be honest, is not that fast. A 2024 Toyota Camry is like a sub 14 second car. And then you have the Police cruiser, which is supposed to be a sub-14 second quarter mile car, and it has a favorable power-to-weight ratio over the Prius...and it's that close. So what's really going on here? My bet - assuming the Charger hasn't had any ponies leave the stable over the years - is you are running at a high altitude, which means the Charger motor most definitely is down on power, and the Prius is running on an electric motor...which requires no air. This is kind of misleading. A more interesting and appropriate comparison would be the Prius against a 2024 Honda Civic with the turbo motor. Civic makes less power than the Prius, but weighs less, and the turbo will help even the playing field at a higher altitude. Otherwise, this comparison is kind of meaningless. Everyone knows at this point that electric motors can be monsters for acceleration, and oh look, the Prius has an electric motor. This test is further exacerbated by the density of the atmosphere, which plays to the strength of the electric motor. Run this race at lower altitudes and I'm willing to bet the outcome is quite a bit different. Or maybe run the test in a cold climate.
