@@iadorenewyork1 the boy mentions who he is .A landowner that these two have some connection with. In their minds (old men with memory problems) "Godot" works. by association, with "God", to the one they prayed to, the one who will save them, etc. as they say. A false hope that on the one hand keeps them alive and on the other keeps them stuck. In their case, of course, "keeps them alive" is more intense. From there the work is a critique of barbarism and class societies. Lucky's monologue essentially emphasizes Marx's contradiction of production relations and productive forces.

"It would be fatuous of me to pretend that I am not aware of the meanings attached to the word 'Godot', and the opinion of many that it means 'God'. But you must remember - I wrote the play in French, and if I did have that meaning in my mind, it was somewhere in my unconscious and I was not overtly aware of it." Samuel .B Godillot is a french word for boot, and feet were somewhat a 'prominent role' in the play.

Barry McGovern plays Vladimir in this filmed version, and the boy messenger is played by Sam McGovern, his son. It's quite interesting to see the interaction between them in this version, keeping that relationship in mind. Kinda meta. It adds a new dimension to Vladimir's line 'Approach, my child' towards the end of Act 1, I thought.

Some one mentioned in a comment before that Beckett could have very well just said that to mess with his audience. Whether Godot is technically God or not according to Beckett doesn’t matter that much, he’s playing God’s part. Our glimpse of humanity in the play spends their time waiting for his arrival, only to be sent his “messengers” day after day who insist on them to keep waiting. It makes sense when you look at the play as a whole. Lucky’s speech begins: “Given the existence as uttered forth in the public works of Puncher and Wattmann of a personal God quaquaquaqua with white beard...” and during this final scene Vladimir asks the boy about Godot’s beard. Vladimir gives a list of colors that the beard could possibly be (fair meaning blond not white), and the boy specifies that it isn’t any of the colors on the list, but is actually white. That’s a pretty obvious callback to Lucky’s speech and basically cements the fact that Godot is in the place of God in my opinion.

WFG is a metaphor for LIFE!!!! And mayonnaise tastes terrible on everything!!!! Go forth and spread my word for I am a spokesperson of PETA!!!" Thanks for the sarcasm jack.... And a large # of people did think it was a daft tale about 4 hobos originally. But youre so smart you probably already knew that.

I know Beckett hated when ppl tried 2 interpret this work, but isn't that why playwrights CREATE these works?? So they can be internalized -- what is the point of watching them if you cannot analyze them also? There is CLEARLY a purpose and identity to this Godot character, and Beckett didn't like for anyone to try to figure it out? In my mind, Godot represents God. For me, it's a perfect interpretation, and since SB has never said WHO he is, I am happy w/ my personal interpretation. It fits
