I’m not seeing Harrison’s 4/26 vs. PIT start as being a stressful outing, considering he had a WHIP of 0.83 - no walks and 5 hits with 7 K’s. Never had a runner on third with fewer than two outs and went 0-4 with RISP. Went 6.0IP with 93 pitches. The only thing stressful about it was the score was 0-0 for his entire outing. He toed off against a fabulous pitcher for PIT, Quinn Prester, who went one for one against him. The ugly is exactly what Bailey said - a lack of a true secondary weakens his fastball effectiveness. He hides the ball well against RHB but can get knocked around by LHB. His current trend seems to be ditching the slurve against RHB and using a changeup instead. But against LHB it’s still just 4SFB and slurve. Bullish on the changeup development since his best friend is Logan Webb.

Agree. That was a solid start, and I think they’re nitpicking. He’s so young, a couple years of experimenting with his secondaries and some more experience I think he’s still going to be above average at worst.

Pfaadt is here! He has developed his fastball into a better pitch. Inches of drop on the fastball this year 17.4 last year 15.9, and he added a little bit more spin 2509 this year to 2469 last year and he’s throwing it a lot less 45% last year, 33% this year. It’s still getting hit hard but his fastball has a 39.4 GB%. He’s also in the 90% percentile of BB%, 31% CSW in April. His fastball was absolutely horrendous last year but signs point to a new and improved Brandon Pfaadt. He also has a 3.11 xERA!

Kyle Harrison was asked by Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow if he ever experimented with different fastball grips. Kyle laughed and said no. Apparently he’s thrown the same fastball from the same arm slot since he was a kid. Harrison’s made the Majors on his four seamer alone, and he’s been able to find some success in 2024 with the fastball a little less electric. His minor league development was slowed by allowing a ton of walks, but he’s allowed very few walks in 2024. If he can keep his walks to reasonable totals, his fastball probably doesn’t need to be as elite. If he has the control to keep walks reasonable, his fastball recovers some movement, and his change up (which he learned directly from Webb and basically started throwing this spring), then Harrison could be a stone’s throw away from a breakout.

You’re definitely watching his starts, this is real ball-knower stuff. Best BB% on the Giants this year, 8th best in MLB. And the changeup is the new pitch on the clock, appeared against RHB last year and is getting worked in more. Currently not too good a pitch but improving, and certainly more promising than that slurve he had in 2023. His start against PIT was the best I’ve seen it. Lots of groundballs and only one hit.

Of course Bailey lusts over Keaton Winn. I wouldn’t be surprised if Harrison and Hicks continue to perform well and are both outperformed by Winn when the year’s done. We might look back on Winn’s 2024 like we did for Logan Webb in 2021. “Whoa, this guy isn’t just good, he’s All Star good, huh?”
They definitely talked about him near the end of the video lmao
