This is why it's so worth it to learn to fix your vehicle. In 2023 the average car price is $47,000. Here you got a $4,000 used SUV put $500 into it and you're not making $800 a month car payments. At Lowe’s they sell a baseball type cap that has led lights under the bill. I brought one several years ago and now I have at least 4 in different places where work is done.Makes working in tight dark places better. So use to having them on while working that I move my head for light adjustment and don’t have a cap on. 🤣 I can stand holding those lights in my mouth. Love the content of your post.

@20:40 FYI: When working on the diffs of older cars, especially ones you don't personally know, you should get into the habit of opening the FILL plug first before draining the fluid out in case the fill plug won't open. The car will be undrivable until you figure out how to get the fill plug unstuck. At least if you find out first it won't open, you just don't drain it so you can still drive it while figuring it out.

Mercedes vehicles can be over engineered and complicated to a degree, but, I work on my own, when I can, and enjoy the relative reliability. Om642 is a reliable engine once you hit a pothole and all clogging exhaust bits falls off. I got an w211 E320 that hit a pothole and it’s clocked at 368k miles tho it’s consuming oil and not leaking at 1 quart/2500 miles it’s acceptable at that mileage. Runs smoothly still looks very good and i pick it up for only $600. I do plan to remove the engine and perform a re-ring & rebuild and get to learn about these engine, there’s plenty of OM642 circulating around in US.

If it drives it's a steal at $600. I've got a 90ies sedan that burned oil for first 3 years of ownership. My work van was down so I hitched up the trailer to the sedan. After towing heavy for ~30 hours the oil level stays the same between oil changes. Before towing it would go from full to 'refill' in an oil change interval. It might be something else, but mpg went up right at the same time.

***Waldo, you can probably get this fixed for free at the dealer! We’ve owned a couple of these Ml350 diesels and Mercedes is currently doing a “dieselgate” type emissions system replacement. If it has not been done yet the dealer will do a full emission replacement, give you a check for $2k and slap a 4yr/48k mile warranty on the drivetrain and emissions components (including turbocharger). If this car has already had it done, then it is almost certainly still under the warranty. Either way Mercedes will likely foot your bill 😁👍

Great video, I saw thumbnail & said "Bet it's about the ML / w16X SUV" series ! I know cause I bought, 8 years ago, and ML500, so an 5 litre V-8, 2002 model year, Mercedes SUV, in a somewhat Rare color. Guess what I paid, yes $4,000 ! She had 102,000 miles & now has 184,000 & is my tow rig for sport & work trailers. You are SO right on Colors for Mercedes-Benz, is there a LAW somewhere that commands them to only use Black, White or Silver on 90% of them ??? I dunno but thrilled my ML500 is Gold Metallic instead. But your red / burgundy color is superb ! And the Turbodiesel Bluetec is great IF she's a reliable engine: As you say they're quite rare so hard for me to say. I will say this for sure, in the 98-05 early series ML (w163 series) the related V6 & V8, named m112 & m113 respectively, are legendarily tough & reliable. I'm an occasional,l active forum tech at Benzworld w163 forum & have heard longevity stories that are exceptional. I love unique German cars & trucks like these. (Tip to newbies: body on frame SUV = Truck) I just obtained a seriously cool yet rare German Station wagon you might look into in future: 2018 Buick Regal TourX AWD 5 door wagon - it's an awesome GT car made by Opel of Germany & only imported into USA in 2018-20. But sold much longer overseas in Europe & Aus / NZ as Opel / Vauxhall Insignia / Holden Commodore. Anyhow it's got Euro / German style & vibe quite the unique runner & NOT a carbon copy Subaru or Volvo wagon. Actually size & performance very similar to the $90,000 Mercedes E class wagon, (still made but seldom seen.) Let me know if you wanna know more on the earlier series ML (my channel has a few w163 mod videos) or Regal TourX Wagon. Imma finish your video now. Cheers - David in East Texas

But great choice - looked at buying one of these but chose a diesel Jag F-Pace which has much better gas mileage (38 mpg @ 90mph). Also 5x the price.... but more sporty and fun to drive, also quieter on long trips. Bought a 2008 ML350 (V6 Gasoline as you say) in white back in 2010. I got it at 60,000 miles, and after 10 years of ownership, I put 170,000 miles on it. It genuinely was a bullet proof car, the most reliable car I’ve ever owned in my life. It only had one major issue towards the end and the repair cost me $1,300. I drove it for 5 days 40 miles a day before I had a day off and take it into the shop, and despite some concerning noises, it still held up. Two of my uncles bought a white ML350 after me, one of them a 2013 diesel with bluetec as well that he sent back to our home country. Now I own a BMW only because I needed a newer car, and the newer Mercedes SUVs aren’t flattering at all, let alone reliable. It’s sad to see how different Mercedes turned out, in my opinion it lost a lot of the style and charm it used to have before 2014/15.

We had a 2011 ML350 Bluetec. We had pure headaches with it: timing chain stretches every 40K miles leading to slapping at cold start. In addition, the whole Bluetec system is finicky and we had to replace NOX sensors and Urea Preheaters multiple times under and without warranty. In addition the tumble flaps in the intake manifold will break from carbon. This car should get walnut blasting every 50K miles. It also takes a very specific oil: MB 229.51, which is hard to find. Mobil 1 ESP (the green label) is impossible to find on store shelves. It is important to use this "low ash" oil to prolong the life of the emission components. If you use regular Mobil 1 TurboDiesel oil, you will see an emission failure quickly.

It runs much better now. I've also rebuilt the turbo and a small boost leak. If you do decide to rebuild the turbo, it is hard to find a rebuild kit and for some reason the one I got was missing a key o ring. Had to buy the o ring separate. Another great purchase, for a low price. I know a lot of people say they're not reliable and they break down all the time, but in my experience it's mostly caused by people themselves - they buy an expensive +100.000$ car, but then cheap out on the maintenance. I experienced that many times when I had my shop, where people wouldn't pay for the expensive fluids specified by the manufacturer, but wanted me to use the cheap discount stuff because "It was good enough for them!" - yeah maybe, but it's not good enough for your car Mister, you need to use the products specified by the manufacturer, or you risk damaging your car and losing your warranty! 😂

As usual and excellent job of trouble shooting and changing all filters and fluids especially on a diesel with 200K!! That is one hell of nice ride for 4K. Those Mercedes diesels are bulletproof as long as they are properly maintained. You own a fleet of cars and trucks now what do you do with all of them...lol. ENJOY!!! You could flip that now and make a tidy profit!

I found that one of those headlight restoration kits was a good way to get the sandpaper, polishing compound, and clear coat to fix a small boo-boo on my car's body. I had to buy the spray paint separately, of course, but I got the different grades of 3M sandpaper and some easy to apply clear coat - those little wipes work rather well - and the end result is that you have to be a few inches away and stare at it to tell the difference. I'm still waiting for more video on the excavator.

I made the mistake of buying a diesel car 5 years ago.. worst mistake a Californian could ever make. So many regulations, and the car is programmed to start slowing down whenever the smog is out of specs! Hope you have better luck than I did. Chevrolet eventually bought the car back under the lemon law. It was in the dealership repair shop for 7 months because they didn't have a replacement dpf...diesel particulate filter...oh, and the dpf costs over $3000. The fun is just beginning!

Waldo is brave, diving into very complex, technical cars that he knows little about, yet with persistence and work and an enquiring mind -- victory in the end. Fairly impressive. Plus it is easy to note that the West Coast cars are much less rotted out than East Coast vehicles, plus places like Vegas are quite dry.

Very educational and enjoyable video Waldo! The skills you are teaching are so important for those that want to learn maintenance and mechanics. I just had my 2012 ML350, that we purchased new, in the shop for service and a number of little repairs. Money well spent on a car with 110k miles that will easily carry me another 50k miles. Better choice than buying a newer used car with unknown history. It also feels good knowing all these MB's are made in America. Ok, assembled in America. 😅

This was an awesome video for those who are wanting to pick up a reliable used luxury SUV and can do some of our own maintenance. I was positive my next suv purchase was going to be a 2nd Gen Lexus RX before watching your video. The ML350 could be a contender for me. By the way the headlights look excellent. I too performed this headlight recon on my 06 CLS55. To make sure the Mercedes plastic didn’t fog up again I installed a layer of clear Lamin-x film which came out excellent and still clear 2 years later.

I have been driving Mercedes 6 cylinder petrol engines on LPG for 13 years and I always fit K&N filters for very smooth air flow, I always fit a Pre Filter as well to give myself a bit of protection, a Mercedes demands a very healthy Battery, any drop in charge cripples the car. The M-Class has a great reputation where I live in the Bavarian mountains.

You can take the DPF and muffler out and pressure wash in reverse flow to clean them out, also do a swirl flap delete and put a resistor in to trick the computer into thinking everything is good, also oil cooler seals. Also another common thing if this is a formatic, if you have popping whenever you floor it then you need to put a new chain in the transfer case.

I have a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 3.0L Diesel (non DPF) Mercedes V6 engine , I think the same as yours. One of the faults those engines have is that around the 160,000Km mark the 'Swirl Valve' fails and the fix is expensive if done by a shop. My headed this issue off by have the 'Swirl Valve' programmed out (deleted). It has been over 10yrs with 300,000 Km plus on the clock and "touching my wooden head" everything has been good so far. When I had the programming done the technician tuned the performance of the engine and I get better fuel economy and better acceleration. You might also want to check the serpentine belt.

Best ever dpf cleaner is without doubt, tried and tested dishwasher tablets. Devolve a good strong mixture in hot water, blank off one end then chock the dpf upright and completely fill with the solution. Also make sure there is only one dog/cat on the car. Leave soaking for a minimum 24 hours. Drain and rinse. If you use a decent reader like Aurelius 850 or above. You can do a running check on exhaust pressures before and after the cat/dpf. Pressure at both ends should be similar. Remember to check how many on the car you are testing. If it’s a steel exhaust the cats are usually aluminium or stainless.

I think that your stalling issue is relatively common. On older Mercedes like mine, the rpms tend to lower quite a bit compared to my land rover when you shift into gear. Maybe check the flywheel, my 2005 G500 is having worse rpm drops now since I have a very worn out flywheel.
