I have owned one of these E320s for over 10 years and they are fantastic. Great on diesel and fast, 0-60 in less than 8 seconds and well over 150 mph flat out. Mine has done 258 thousand miles and has never given a moment's trouble. I have no idea why Americans don't like diesel cars, they are better in every way to petrol.

Todays modern diesels are more refined and better to drive than Petrols or Gas as you call it. Americans are starting to pay much higher prices and why anyone buys V8 ponderous Gas guzzling 3 tonne boats is a mystery to me

This remains me of exactly the same situation i have experienced with a Toyota Camry 11 years ago , and it sucked me dry to get it fixed . What I like the most on this , is that you're soo well equipped , and prepared and ready financially , physically and emotionally for all the hard work and all the difficulties and the challenges you're facing every moment to get them resolved . I first ask myself... how much do I have both physically and emotionally invested in this thing to make it worth my time to fix all the issues on this car? If the answer is not sufficient... I have a 2007 E320 with the OM642 V6 diesel in it. It is an outstanding car at every angle. I can see 37MPG on the highway running 75-80MPH on flat Texas highways. The E320 is a fast and very nice handling car. I really enjoy driving it over my other vehicles. I would find another OM642 engine for it and rebuild it. It’s well worth it in my view. The torque and power will surly put a smile on your face.

Glad you’re back! I’ve watched your entire library of videos and need more! I was thinking, until you get the slab poured for your barn/garage, you could buy a sheet of half or 3/4 inch steel plate that’s about 6 feet wide to butt up against it. Put some rust converter on it to keep it nice. Could also set one up outside. It would at least keep the engine hoist from digging in so much and would give a better surface to put a jack on.

Sorry for your difficulties. I bought a flood damaged E320 (2005 straight 6 with a 722.6 tranny. ) It was a runs and drives listing on CoPart. Photos indicated water into the cabin but only a couple of inches. WHen I received the car, it was in limp home mode and the seats were inoperative. A $125 scan tool reset all the codes. I replaced the seat brains under the seat @$110 each and a seat motor for $15 at a pick and pull. That was 7 years ago. Since then I've replaced windshield wipers, a few bulbs and kept up with all the maintenance as needed. Car had 105,-000 dealer maintained miles and records and extended service had been done on the car a month before the water incident. Yes, I got lucky-but I scanned CoPart listings for 4 months searching for the right specs. Its the 4th MB diesel I've hadTHe low running costs and lower depreciation enable me to keep a fleet of old Alfas running

Oh Waldo, if only you would have asked if this was a smart purchase! I love the 06 and prior E320 with the inline 6 much better than the 07 and newer V6. Since you asked us what you should do here’s my 2 cents. If the interior is pristine, the rest of the drivetrain looks to be in good working order, and the electronics check out, I’d would try to find a good used engine or maybe see what a reman’d long block would cost. I’m sure the head on the side the rod broke is shot. It would make for some good content though. As a former owner of an 06 E320, I can tell you they are an absolutely joy to drive. Time to open up that wallet! 😂

I agree! Had an '07 Bluetec. Nothing but trouble. Oil cooler leaked, water pump, power steering pump, turbo oil seals leaked, thermostat, rough shifting transmission, the list goes on and on. Modern diesels are not any more reliable now that they have all of the emissions crap on them. Unless you can monetize these videos, I would recommend not throwing anymore money at this car. The very fact the previous owner neglected basic maintenance does not bode well for all of the other components that were likewise neglected.

The used Mercedes diesel engines are quite spendy - considering the market value of this car. It will likely make great content, but in no way would this be economical for the purposes of driving or reselling. Cheaper probably just to buy a good used one.

Yes I have experience in the Merc V8s from trom 1965 to 1985 , 350 450 range even 1972 Merc has a computer for the jettronic injection , but in this case it would be the interface with electrics and computers, LS has its own system I know , interesting comments

We have 2 sprinter vans, 01 with a cdi om612, and an 08 with the 3.0 v6. Surprisingly the v6 is still running pretty decent at 500k Miles (trans just gave up though) The cdi gave up early at 230k. Cdi did have better fuel mileage and pulls better. The guy we bought the 08 from runs a fleet of them, had one with 800k miles on original engine on the 3.0!

I have a 2003 straight-six E320 Avantgarde CDI estate. I also have the newer generation, 2013 E220 Avantgarde Bluefficiency CDI estate. These S211 (W211 saloon) are really good. They are easy to drive, to park, they are powerful (the V6 has over 220bhp and well over 500Nm of torque), yet economic. The E-class Mercedes is always the best car one can afford. Find one with good service history and if yo7 are buying the V6, check the engine properly. With the earlier, pre-facelift models, check the air suspension and brakes. Otherwise, apart from the injector seals, they should be reliable. These are well built, premium cars. When things go wrong, don’t be surprised to spend more than you would with economy cars, but the Mercedes will go on forever.

Hi Waldo, I would get the second one, see if you need any parts from the first for the second, and then sell whatever was extra from the first one. If it costs $400 for a key, I can't even imagine what an engine would cost, even a used one. Thanks for digging into the bad engine and videoing it. It's pretty remarkable how much potential energy exists in all those moving parts, separated from each other by the tinyest little cushion of oil. I agree with your diagnosis of too many miles and too few oil changes as the root cause of why the engine failed. I wonder what Mercedes charges for an oil change. Thanks for the video! -mike

This was a very common issue if someone didn’t know how to work on these engines. These engines suffer from an oil cooler leak which is a nightmare to do I’ve done many. The problem is when you remove the oil cooler if the cooling system wasn’t drained coolant will enter the crankcase and after the job is done if the oil is not drained oil floats to the top oil pump sucks up the coolant and they throw a rod. Seen this many times. These engines are definitely not as reliable as the om648 inline 6. Only 05/06 years came with these after that they switched to the om642 v6 which suffers from many issues oil cooler dpf issues turbos go out injectors leak, egr etc

Early versions of the W211 E320CDi suffered from a lot of electronic faults, particularly the instrument cluster, navigation system and PCM. 2 friends of mine bought one each new in 2003, and both had a lot of problems. One of them also had to have the oil pump replaced under a recall, before he even collected it from the dealership, and they had to have it back because they left the bolts loose on the engine mounts when they changed the pump. After more problems, Mercedes took the car back after 6 months and gave him another brand new one.

Reminds me of a similar situation I was involved in back in 1972. Our office manager's husband wanted a Mercedes and there was one 1971 (loaded 4 door ) in a salvage yard and it was bringing high bucks. However, it was jammed between two other cars so the doors couldn't open. Opps, the car on the right was a standard which would roll and we did. Opened the hood and guess what? Engine was blown probably due to lack of oil. Later on I ran into dealer who bought it and He took a BIG BATH!!!!! In your case take you time and find a good used engine and switch. This unit looks good on the video.

I bought one just like this V6 diesel and I took a trip from Washington State to South Carolina when I made it to Idaho my 3rd Injector failed causing the engine to shake like crazy at idle and not run right I went ahead and full send it all the way over there I only going 63 mph Cruise control eventually made it without any other issues and I got 38 MPG and spent $400 in diesel.

I have the same engine in a 2008 GL with 210K miles. The factory recommends Mobile 1 gasoline engine oil which I won’t use. I change the oil every 10K and send a sample for oil analysis every time. I use Amsoil heavy duty diesel extended interval oil. According to the laboratory report the oil is still fine at this point. Of course now it’s burning about 4 quarts between every drain interval so a rebuild will be in order soon. My friend has one too but he lost his EGR, DPF and swirl flaps in a boating accident so his engine runs cleaner..... so I’ve heard.

My first Bluetec was 2004 E320. I could drive from New Orleans to Atlanta on a single tank of gas. Problem was I paid $57,000 for it and 5 years and 120,000 later, I got $5,000 on trade at MB. That same scenario played out 4 times over 18 years, so I quit Benz and bought a Lexus.

Agree with you on the oil changes. Those bearings look like they were oil starved. I bet if you pull the rest of the piston bearing caps and the mains, you'd get the same scoring on all of them. Might also be worth it to tear down the oil pump and see if there is any evidence of sludge build up that would have caused the oil starvation in the first place.

Oil cooler seals. Most common oil leak on these. Even if you do the job in time, but forget to purge the airlocked oil gallery it is likely to spin #6

@@mbz4652 Not after oil change. I mean after oil cooler replacement. You have to crank the engine several times without the injectors, to make sure oil is pumped through the new oil cooler and the galleries that feed from it, before putting the crank under load.

It’s a new emissions diesel so obviously you have to work around it all. With a proper delete and hood maintenance, these will live forever, and can make good power if you’d like them too. Also, with a full straight pipe they sound mighty good 😉

I own a 2002 Nissan Maxima with a 3.5 V6, after 20 years and over 200K miles it still runs like a champ. I change the oil every 3000K miles with Mobil 1 Full synthetic.

The OM642s.. Owned a GL 320 for 7 years and the money light comes on often. Decent motor but gets too much heat trapped in these E, ML and GL chassis. Sprinter vans don’t have as much of an issue with them. Replace oil cooler seals and timing chain or guides from your donor motor before dropping it back into the car. All the other issues that pop up are small. 10K factory recommended oil changes are too long but you are stuck with that spec oil from all the 1st gen emission parts.

I hope the new Benz you purchased is '05 or earlier. The earlier the diesel the better for you. Less electronics and more potential. Going back a generation to W210 will even get you into the OM606 world - one of the best diesels out there.

The answer to what you should do depends on whether or not it will need to pass emissions/inspection afterwards. If it does need to, then get a new block and rebuild it. If it doesn't then 4bt swap it.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars, trucks and busses including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated central gas station per city. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.

It doesn't make sense to spend all that time swapping parts over when I can just buy a donor vehicle with a (hopefully) good engine. I have no shortage of projects available for content right now 😂

@@WaldosWorld Waldo, do some research on this engine, OM642. The biggest issue they had is the oil cooler, these were notorious for leaking and frying the swirl flap motor conveniently located right below. Also, the EGR system really fouls up the intakes reducing performance, which will happen on even a well maintained engine. Make sure the DPF isn't clogged, given the lack of maintenance your car had, it's possible the previous owner drove it without the regen cycle going. Hopefully you can make the money back from the content, because old Mercedes' are money pits, especially ones with questionable history.

U can manualy unlock auto transmissions from mercedes when u pull up the leather at the shifter and press or pull the yellow tab. So you can pull the car from the trailer without damaging the trans. (at 1:10 ...)

I have never had a love for the V6 configuration for a diesel engine, especially Mercedes ones. The BMW inline 6 was a lot better in terms of reliability and performance, although it too had its shortcomings. Maintenance of all engines is key to their longevity, but some engines do not give you a good return on your investments. Enjoyed the video, thank you.

I usually pull the engine and transmission out also. It helps to remove the hood, fan, radiator after staining the radiator. Plus the usual lines and electric wires disconnected first. Well that motor has some reusable parts but the block, Internal parts, and heads are scrap metal.

I was a big diesel enthusiast until my previous car, a VW TDI, highlighted how many fuel stations have bad diesel. The Turkey Hill down the street, for example, tested safe from water in the tank by weights and measures. Yet I pulled a gallon sample a couple of days after my last fuel pump failure (two failures over 30k mi from new) and found at least a few ounces of something clear that settled at the bottom of the container. Conversely, the gallon from a Speedway, that I also frequently used, was clear with no separation. With the price premium and fuel quality inconsistency in the midwest U.S., I see no value in sticking with diesel for small passenger vehicles like the E320 or a VW TDI. And like someone else mentioned, modern diesels are not as robust and forgiving as the old 70-90’s Mercedes’ that I grew up loving.

Go and pick up the new one. See how good it is. If it needs work, use the 1st one for parts. If the new one is good, get a new engine for the 1st one. Once both are fixed, keep the best one and sell the other.

I drove the e220 cdi for 17 years as a taxi in Athens.Amazing car u should buy a used engine and put it on. its so cool car that its worth it. Take care of the catalytic filter cause we had incidents of fire from them here in Athens..I made 1.000.000 kilometers with same engine and transmission by the way..

Considering Diesel prices are higher than gas, fewer people are Diesel experts and LPG reigns supreme when it comes to affordability, longevity is the main selling point but got worse in recent years due to so called emissions restrictions.

I recon you should replace the engine if the rest of the vehicle is in working order. I appreciate you will own two, however if it is rare, then it makes sense to repair it, then either keep the best of both vehicles, keep both, sell one or sell both. Parting it out would be disastrous if the engine was the only issue. Land Rover recommends a service interval of 12,000km or 12 months, whatever comes first for the LR3 TDv6. I do mine every 6 months or 10,000km, whatever comes first. On an older technology diesel, i did it every 5,000km or 6 months, again whatever came first. I always replaced the oil filter and oil at the same time on all my vehicles whether they be diesel or petrol. The vehicles will love you for it!

I’ve been away from your channel and glad to see all is well with you. I definitely enjoyed your road trip in the Land Rover and beautiful scenery. Amazing to see a beautiful diesel Mercedes neglected like that. I’ve always been a fan of diesel engines too and currently own two older VW diesels (pre-emissions scandal). These little turbo diesels have good power and fuel economy but definitely require you keep up on the maintenance. Looking forward to how things go withe the Mercedes Bluetec. 👍👍

Hi Waldo, my name is Roger and I live in Germany. I had found this video and than your channel....wow its realy exciting to see that you work on this W211! Normaly you got not such problems with this type of engines, mostly the transmission (5G-Tronic or the 7G-Tronic) is terrible. This serie is so bad but so awsome to drive. Last year I bougt a E400 CDI with the OM628 V8 Diesel...it costs me lots of money, time and blows my mind....but on the street and the Autobahn its a dream to drive!
