Must have been very annoying to the locals ... but they were very kind and repeated until I could understand. My UK friends used to say "wha ?" and roar with laughter whenever they knew I didn't understand what they had said. Can not wait to return!

When you said, "we can drive 20 minutes in any direction and we get another accent" that's exactly the same as it is in Los Angeles, or I guess any big city. I can almost always tell where a person grew up in Los Angeles by their distinct L.A. accent. I LOVE different accents and one of my favorite accents of English is the Welsh accent. It's SO sexy!!! I used to watch Torchwood and had a big crush on Gwen and the way she said O-wén or her husband's name Reese (Reeeeese). OMG, such a fanboy for the Welsh accent.

I love to hear about regional customs and language. Here in the States, when I lived nearby in Rhode Island, I lived in an old mill town named, "Woonsocket" (funny name, but it's a mix of English and American Indian tongue roughly translated into "Thunder Mist" for a large waterfall on the river that flows through the city), which had a large migratory ethnic Quebecois population, that came down from Canada to work in the old woolen mills back in the day. It created a very interesting way to speak. A couple of examples would be: "Side by each" means to parallel park along a city street and a way to tell someone to get you your hat before heading out would be, "Throw me down the stairs, my hat". Obviously, it's a strong French language influence on the area.

They're traditionally cooked on a cast-iron bakestone, so I can see where the nickname came from. In Welsh, they're "picau" or "picau ar y maen", literally "little cakes on the stone" - "maen" being Welsh for (bake)stone. My mother has a bakestone that's been passed down through umpteen generations, and she's made some fine Welsh Cakes on it in her time :)

So, Wales is between Briton and Ireland right? Because that's what you sound like in the car. A hybrid Irish/Brit ;-)
@WalesTheTrueBritons4 жыл бұрын
Um nope - Wales is in Britain. The natives of the island, you know, the British! Are now known in English as the Welsh. Only in the last 200 years have the English become interchangeable with British. Even though they are technically German. It really annoys Patriotic Welsh people as they are basically pretending to be someone they aren't. Most Welsh refuse to identify with British because of the actions of the empire. Edit - another annoyance, because all three Countries are seen as one (when they arent), Many areas such as entertainment can hire predominantly English only people and say they are representing the others, even thpugh they are completely different people. This is one of the main reasons Wales is hardly known about in America. Even though they've had such a huge impact on the country.
