Tagalog has a lot of Spanish influence due to 300 years of being colonized by Spain. There's another language in Philippines called Chabacano and mix even more Spanish, and there's regions where still Spanish is spoken.

When I live in the P.I. I knew Filipinos who spoke chabacano. But, of course, they also spoke Tagalog, and usually another dialect (at least one). Their "mother tongue" was chabacano. They informed me that the only (or the main) difference between it and Spanish is that chabacano did not have verb tenses. There may have other differences but that was the main difference.

I genuinely love watching you guys watching Filipino artists and discovering the similar words between Tagalog and Spanish. It's like finding out you have these cousins you never knew you had. I believe a lot of Spanish speaking countries have some kind of conquistador history and so does the Philippines.

You've reacted to a cover of Shanti Dope's song, "Nadarang" by Khel Pangilinan and Rhyssi - that's why his name rings a bell! There are loads of Spanish loan words in Filipino - in that song alone, there's: de kwatro (de cuatro), kwarto (cuarto), bintana (ventana), pasensya (paciencia), imposible, pelikula (película), simple, oras (hora). We used to have the Spanish letters CH, LL, and Ñ in the Filipino alphabet but have, in the last 50 years, removed the CH and LL and only retained the Ñ.

I think Tagalog is very percussive because a lot of syllables repeat when changing tenses and we tend to repeat words to exponentiate the impact or feeling of a phrase.

omg i've been waiting for this reaction! it's interesting to hear you guys talk about how tagalog/filipino sounds like from your perspective as a non filipino speaker. There are a few Spanish loan words in tagalog/filipno = remnants of colonization. It would be interesting if you guys react to Porque by Maldita (orig) or Aria Clemente chavacano version. Chavacano is another language spoken in souther philippines that has majority Spanish vocab but is more similar to filipino grammar-wise. I actually dont think a lot of Filipinos know this song but I, as someone who understands filipino and spanish, definitely find this spanish-creole song very cool (though a little bit confusing) to listen to
