The Art Institute of Chicago was founded in 1879 as a museum and school for the fine arts, during the city's rebuilding after the Great Fire of 1871.
The institution's permanent collection has grown from plaster casts to nearly 300,000 works of art, and it is now internationally recognized as a leading fine-arts institution in the United States.
The Art Institute has undergone eight major expansions for gallery and administrative space, with the latest being the Modern Wing, which opened in 2009.
