Don’t mind me, just making some notes so that I can learn more about this kind of workflow. I love drawing with thick lineart, so I’m trying to learn how to make full blown coloured pieces in a realistic style (with a bit of stylization) of course :) 0:00 - laying down a sketch in a slightly dark grey. Focal point of the artwork is in a different shade for contrast. Thin but sketchy lineart used on top of a medium-grey background. 2:05 - Filling in the mid ground with a grey (at the right value, so it’s visible, but not so contrasting it takes away attention from the focal point - the human by the store. Pleasant for the eyes.) On a clipping mask to this layer, start shading. 2:08 - Okay, so I can’t figure out what, but something’s happened to the lineart to make it fade out into the distance, to look like atmospheric perspective. I think it’s just a clipping mask to the lineart, but teh shading looks too neat for that. It could be a layer mode or something, but I’m not too sure. 2:11 - Adding details in between the middle ground at background. Actually, I notice there aren’t clear-cut distinctions between the foreground, middle ground, and background in this piece like in real life, which helps sell it’s 3-dimensionality even more. This stuff is painted in another darkish shade of grey because it’s closer to the front. 2:30 - Painting buildings in the background in a lightish shade of grey, but it is still darker than the sky. 2:45 - the shorter buildings are done in a light colour. It might even be erased off the bigger buildings behind. The outlines are the same grey as the bigger buildings, but the smaller buildings are sky coloured. This adds to the variation without using so many shades of grey that it’s looks distracting. 3:07 - deetails. Thin outlines to mark out where things should be. Stuff in the foreground is a much darker colour. The signs help fill up empty space, balance the composition, and lead the eyes towards the main scene where a story is being told. 3:02 - So, those little buildings in the front were indeed erased. These blank spaces are filled in with a lighter, Low-contrast grey to mimic atmospheric perspective: blink and you’ll miss it, that was so fast. 3:40 - darkening the sky momentarily to check the values, I think. From then on, there’s a bunch of details being added, such as with the tiles. 3:57 - Making the background blue!! What a huge effect, this is when the painting starts to come to life, as it sets the mood for the rest of the piece. Note that this also affects the streetlights ‘between’ the middleground and background, but the bluishness is a lot lesser. Again, instead of blurring out the background, atmospheric perspective is used her to create depth. Not too sure which layer mode was used for this, because there was definitely one. It might’ve been overlay, I think. Anyways, A bright white added to the lamps too, to establish them as the brightest light sources in the scene. 4:01 - Brown added all over the ground and the buildings, but it’d desaturated, like the rest of the scene. I seriously can’t figure out which blending mode is being used. A splash of red over the shop walls, with green and yellow for its interior. The brightness compared to the rest of the scene suggests a strong light source. Later fades out into an orange that reflects and even permeates through the shop’s roofs. This is called subsurface scattering, I think, which suggests the little covers jutting out are made of cloth 4:07 - the orangey glow is reflected onto the ground where the kid is standing, and a bit onto the shop’s walls too. The ground also reflects teh bluishness of the sky in the middleground. This is usually more common when the ground is wet, after rain. Similarly, other areas such as the shop sign also reflect the bluishness. This gets stronger as we move to the back, where atmospheric perspective also lends to that blueish vibe. 4:11 - I have no idea how this jump in colouring was made, but things appear … brighter. I suspect it might be colour dodge, but my knowledge on blending modes is a bit weak. 4:15 - The use of pure white has been restricted to strong light sources, and the signs are one of them. Adding a bluish glow lends to the chilli nests of this scene. Also highlights the warmth of the shop. 4:20 - colouring in the blank spaces, such as the signboards. 4:44 - lots of shading and adding of shadows. These are rarely shadows with sharp edges, since this is an evening. Only harsh, bright sunlight like you see in midday cause sharp shadows. The shadows painted here seem to be done either with a round brush (light strokes) or a soft airbrush. 5:00 - coloured squares on the buildings, and then painting the light coming from within the city. The high rises fade out into the air due to atmospheric perspective. 5:53 - glowey lines :) 6:01 - windows on the ‘screen blending mode,’ I believe? Copy and paste + warping and distorting to distort the windows to the shape of the buildings. 9:10 - Clouds / smoke / mist / haze - round brush + smudging. Then alpha lock and paint over so the haze is lit up. This is on the ‘lighten’ mode. 10:33 - wolf. Okay, that’s enough to work with for now. The rest is just a lot of detailing.

Too many moments where I forget to breath looking at this happen. Always mindblowing and the knowledge shared is bonkers. The very first part skipped here (the setup of the perspective vanishing points inside procreate and using it afterwards) is a must watch. Thank you. I used PS before, but switched to Procreate in 2012. You can do any level of detail in Procreate. I think it is better than Photoshop in many ways, and much more fun to use :-)

Amazing work! I just recently got my apple pencil and i bought a good portion of your tutorials I've gotten a lot better with my forest thumbnails. Only issue i have is how would you design mountains or rock forms? From simple silhouettes to more detailed if theyre the main focus

Art By Infamous Thank you. Glad you got better from my tutorials. If I were to draw a mountain you see the silouette of I would start with that. Then ad details of structure/snow and so on after. But if you have a big mountain wall that takes up alot of the image and you just want to have a good structure, look at reference and try to simlify what the mountain-structure is. Reference is good in any case! Mountain and rock is very fickle and adwansed shapes, but just practice from reference many times and eventually you will decode it and be able to do it from imagination.

Astonishing (as usual)! Nikolai is teaching you concept, structure, and technique. What he can’t teach you is how to make “art" instead of simply an illustration. What this master does comes from untold hours of observation, trial, and experience. Don’t be too discouraged if you can’t seem to ever approach what this guy does. A BIG factor in this is the tools the Universe gave him. Either you were born with them, or you weren’t. That’s what separates those who can make pretty pictures from those who make art. Keep trying though. This man is a serious inspiration.

Reminds me of a dream I had 7 years ago, involved a big black wolf (unrealistically bigger) and a girl in a blue dress. Throw a large deer with a skull head in the background within the fog and I would have thought this was my dream 🤣 I still struggle with spacing and perspective, I understand it but there's like a path in my brain to my hand that just doesn't seem to want to connect to be able to do it. In any case, this is really stunning. 🤩

Which tablet do you use? Do you recommend learning to draw digitally? Or on paper? Cintiq is pretty expensive.

Ive began doing traditional and still do when I’m comfortable. However both myself and many others have learned the fundamentals digitally because in the long run it costs less money and time because you are not constantly erasing, repainting, doing gestures drawing on a large ream and then finding storage to keep that. The latest IPad 8 is $329 and is an amazing value for artists. Procreate is $10. The Apple Pencil is such a good tool (better than my experience with Wacom and huion pens) $100. I’ve tried the cheaper alternatives to the Apple Pencil. They don’t compare. Apple Pencil is where it’s at. So after $439 you have a drawing tablet with a top tier pen, a great camera, streaming services for chill time and many other great apps.
