I like the south and I can stay for a while, but if I ever retire in Thailand it would be Chiang Mai. I agree with Wayne, it is a city that gets into you, it becomes a part of you and one you visit it never leaves you. It is a combination of things that make it real, the university city vibe, the old town, the food, the jazz, the markets, best coffee in the world, obviously the people and the perfect scale, not a mega city like Bangkok but not a small village neither. Absolutely love the place.

Good to see you back in Chiang Mai ayne. I don't blame you for travelling, in your position it would be silly not to but Chiang Mai is Chiang Mai and I can see how it would be difficult to leave for good. Great to see you in the Fern Gorest/ Goodsouls area, we will be there next week and can't wait. When you turned left by Goodsouls you went past Fah Lanna spa. Not sure whether you have been there but there is a lovely cafe there with waterwheel as a feature, we've had many a happy lunch there and no doubt will do in the next couple of weeks. Keep up the good work Wayne. Thanks as always, Alan and Lillian in OZ

I feel more like coming home when I land at Chiang Mai airport than when I arrive at Stockholm Arlanda As pensioners we live 7-8 months in Thailand and the rest of the year in Sweden. @RetireandGo G'day. I could write a short novel. I would recommend perhaps checking out the big four cities of the region as a starter. Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Ratchasima. You could make a nice trip of starting In Nakhon, onto Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and finishing in Nong Khai right on the Laos border. I lived in Laos for a while so went to Nong Khai and Udon quite a bit for things not available there. If you haven't ventured into Laos before I also highly recommend.

Personally I can only stay about 4 years before complacency sets it. While Chiangmai is great, Thailand has a lot of other places to explore. Take a leap just before burning season, maybe Hua Hin, but give it 3 months and if you miss Chiangmai, you can always move back since you know it well. It’s wonderful to know more than one place well in Thailand.

It’s called the Dual Train track, BKK to Hua Hin. The station is built over the old HH train station next to the golf course. Will reach 164kph, eta is end of 2023, which means more like June 2024. It ends at HH so no delays going back. Then a speed train will go all the way south to Malaysia scheduled completion is 2037.

@@WalkAboutWayne I always found Thailand more charming and dynamic than Malaysia, but Malaysia more rational (and boring), easier from the standpoint of language, and more western and practical in terms of legal and business dealings than Thailand and less of a 'grinder' for ex-pats and tourists than the ex-pat and tourist areas of Thailand. Going back to Penang after time in Thailand always felt like a step down in some ways but a bit of a relief, and Penang always for me had that "Returning Home" feel you describe in Chaing Mai, that I also felt in Chaing Mai, Tokyo, Fukuoka and at times even Bangkok. From what I see online Penang and K.L. seem much more developed and modern and affordable now, but if that comes with added pressures and complexities, perhaps it's not the laid-back home I experienced, and you would be just the guy to trust on that one.

i was staying at the roseate hotel quite close to that wall it might be nice to do an update on the process of the rebuild every 2 months or so the reason why i liked chiang mai was that it was cooler there than in bangkok , a lot more quet during the evening too since covid working from home is starting to get more common and teleconference when they need to come together now that the bosses have seen that the wrk still gets done , so it should be a small step to move home to where the sun shines and living is cheap , the digital nomad thing might actually pick up again

Sad to see that the Chiang Phuak marked disappear. It was my go to place to eat in the evening! So simple and cheap but still lots of delicious food there. There are falangs that lives in Chiang Mai area that visit Hua Hin, Cha Am, Pattaya and other places 2-3 months in the smokey season. And they have done that for at least 10 years now. Chiang Mai sit down in a kind of a valley and collect the smoke, but at the cost in the south you have the sea breeze that blow the smoke away and make the air fresher.

I went up to that overlook place in Hua Hin and decided to make it my workout place after going there once already (it was pretty peaceful) and what a difference the day makes, the place was absolutely loaded with monkeys who weren't scared of anything and I found out why. Apparently there are rival gangs of monkeys there and I witnessed a major feud between them. The trees were literally emptied out and they got into a major squabble, even the little ones learn from an early age to go out and fight for their "gang"? One even used it as an opportunity to get a quick hump during the festivity (very common apparently). I wouldnt like to be the victim of their anger as these packs lashed out at eachother. They even had my raincoat out of my bike seat with a pack of chewing gum in it. So much for the workout place but so far I love it in Hua Hin, The monkeys do remind me of a city I left in the USA many years ago.

Lol... Indeed I had similar thoughts about the wild monkeys that raise havoc all around where I live Portland. In Malaysia I used to live on the edge of a jungle and the little monkeys just like the monkeys in the U.S. used to steal what ever was left lying about. One time in Penang, left a headlight relay that took me weeks to get, along with and some tools under the hood of my car as I went inside to get a cold drink and when I stepped out the relay and tools were gone I looked around and spied a band of Monkeys in the tree above the car the tools and relay. I grabbed a length of plastic water pipe form the neighbors garden and tried to poke the monkey enough so he would drop the relay, but he just sneered and clutched it tighter. When he moved further out on a limb I was able to swat the little bastard out of tree and he landed upright on the driveway directly in-front of me. Again, I again tried to swat the relay away from his grubby little paws him with the water pipe, but he simply sneered and ran back the Jungle tightly clutching the relay with his gang who had my tools.

I thought you would have much preferred Hua Hin due to your reluctance to learn the Thai language,it would make your vlogs so much more entertaining if you could interact more with the locals in Chiang Mai.

Reluctance? Don't know where that's from? I know loads of locals here buddy and can talk to them ok 👍. Not many vloggers go around speaking Thai 👍
@broadwoodloch

@WalkAboutWayne Most of those vloggers don't live in Thailand they travel to many countries,it was just a suggestion for you to learn some more Thai,it certainly helped Ken grow his channel to start with and Harald when he was lived in Thailand, also Chuck from Notime2besad,it's just something I like when vloggers have some banter with the locals.

Southern Thailand has become way too expensive compared to laid back Northern Thailand…. I’ve been travelling to Thailand since the early 90s and many others would say the 80s also were perhaps the greatest times……Thailand today has grown up a lot but this in many parts of the country has come at a cost…..I still love Thailand which I visit often but for me Cambodia 🇰🇭 has become my home…and easier for retirement visas etc….Cheers mate

I didn't see a massive difference in price. I could probably live nearly the same in Hua Hin. But I don't do much, and it would be more expensive to go out doing things, for sure.

Travel so cheap around Thailand. So wouldn't be that important to me to have to make a decision. Ed Sweeny prefers buses. Not me. Always noisy now with the phones. Anyway, question for Wayne...One time on Loi Kroh the girls left a deodorant can on my table. What do you think they were trying to say?
