The quality and information in this review was next level. I've often wanted to make some gear reviews, but they wouldn't come anywhere near this level of stuff Griffin. Thanks for putting in the work on these. I thoroughly enjoy this and your hiding a microphone tip! The only thing I would have added is more information about how the quick release goes into the Manfrotto tripod system. I use the longer rail system of tripod heads, and not the shorter one that you use.

I have had the Black Rapid system for years and it's too much weight on my shoulders and neck after this many years. Today I got the Spider pro2 single with the Spider Light plate for the A7iii. Shoot starts in an hour or so, I will see how the whole show goes!

I have the original Spider holster system,with the belt and all. I think its a great bit of kit for the right camera.However having lugged around a Nikon D800 with a 24-70 hanging off it all day for up to 14 hours, it got a bit cumbersome and heavy on my hip. I probably would have preferred the shoulder holster,but it wasn't available at the time. I agree that for both video and still its very handy,especially with more 5 axis stabilized cameras on the horizon.

The spider lite clip makes juggling 2 bodies a breeze at event work. I shoot Fuji so weight of gear is not an issue if I stick to a short zoom or prime on the body. Great product, worth every cent. Nice video.

G'day Mate, I've had my Spidy for years and I use the pad not on my shoulder. I use the pad & holster on my left hip attached to my Cotton Carrier 'Sling Belt'. It works an absolute treat using Spider's Tripod '2 pin' adaptor to carry my travel tripod instead of my camera as I use the Cotton Carrier system where I can transfer from right hip to chest via their Harness. Anyway if you haven't used Cotton Carrier I'd look into it as I find their carrying system much easier for when on location for landscape work. If Spider had a similair harness to the Cotton Carrier 'Skout' it would be much more stable rather than their backpack clip. I think Peak Design's looks to be a little better via their 'Capture' clip.

This is pretty much what I'm looking for as a hobby photographer. So much more accessible and convenient than pulling it out of a shoulder bag. I'd like to hang mine vertically as well such as you did when you moved it to your left side but it seems it's just not designed to do that on the right side. That's too bad. Having it hang horizontally is a deal breaker for me. I just don't have that much lens on it usually. My minimalist setup is why I'm kind of drawn to a holster anyway.

You unlocked a new skin for you character: Wilderness Griffin May biggest worry about this tool is my worry. I would be stressed about my camera and my pants at the same time, even if it's 100% safe. I like my non-used camera in some kind of bag.
@GriffinHammond

I did occasionally bump the camera into things, like when I got on and off gondolas in Switzerland. But it happened rarely, I know the camera can handle a little action, and I suppose that's one reason it's nice the camera swings a little, to minimize impact.

I've wondered about holsters and if I would ever use one or trust one. My first issue is just being able to trust that it wouldn't fall off. Not that I'm would be doing any flips or tumbling around with a camera on my belt but I would worry about the strudyness of the holster. Secondly I've wondered if my setup would need a harness now. I mostly use my camcorder, the Panasonic AG-UX90, and that wouldn't go on a holster at all. Joking aside, since that's my main camera I could use a holster for my DSLR but the quality difference makes using my current DSLR and camcorder together not that possible. So if I got a better B-cam, I would consider getting a holster, if it was also cost effective.

Always thoroughly informative. As a hiker and kind of film maker, hikers don't usually wear jeans and leather belts. I suspect the device would not be suitable for usual light weight hiking clothing?

Pretty cool device! I prefer my camera to be at the front of my body the hips are a points that I am most likely to impact such as misjudging the distance through a door way, sliding on my butt or getting into boats cars etc... A good small camera bag fastened cross shoulder and tied to my belt offers good protection. Adding a little wrist lanyard adds protection when shooting.

why dont they have a spring so it always defaults to the locked posn?
@BossmodePictures
@BossmodePictures 7 жыл бұрын
I bought a cheap belt holster some time ago on eBay an just used it for a week on vacation. This one has a spring and automatically locks. Problem here: you can not grab your camera with one hand as you always have to hold down the lever to unlock while you pick up the camera. Although, it is more secure, especially for city-trips, where thieves in a crowd might have a hard time grabbing your camera two-handed.

I prefer the capture pro holster from peak design. It allows me to use just one arca swiss QR plate across all my tripods/sliders/etc. I don't think I'd like the ball sticking out on the bottom of the spiderlight, setting your camera down on anything would be a pain.
@GriffinHammond
@GriffinHammond 7 жыл бұрын
That is cool that you can use one plate across devices. I'd also expected the ball to interfere with putting the camera down, but as long as I had a lens on, the whole camera becomes a tripod-ball, lens, body-and sits very securely.
@jeremydwayne
@jeremydwayne 7 жыл бұрын
Griffin Hammond yea, makes it quick for swapping support devices. I just put a arca swiss mount on all my other kinds of QR plates (like the longer manfrotto ones) so I can do it quickly.

Do you use VND filters with it hanging like that? I wonder cause I went with an 82mm to cover all my lens and I don't think that would work. Maybe a smaller one? But mine has a nice little handle thing to make it easier to change. So a smaller VNDF wont solve it completely. But then I don't see that you have such a thing. Do you used a fixed ND filter and swap them out if lighting changes over time?

CottonCarrier has a backpack product too. My experience of it was that it works great with tiny cameras like Panasonic GM5. With larger bodies like GH5 (not at all confusing naming scheme...) I did not like it as much - works but a bit uncomfortable. Haven’t tried hip mounted cameras. The thing about walking with a camera around your neck you mentioned - doesn’t that get crazy uncomfortable after a day’s hike?

It all depends on what camera/lens you are carrying. I tried it with Nikon D750 + Nikon 16-35 and it was kind of heavy/unbalanced and uncomfortable. I think its better suited for something like Sony A6500 or similar size camera and a small lens.

Hey Griffin, I'm interested in this as I am a motorcycle film maker and would like something to hold the camera and offer quick release for shooting while im on the bike... Do you think the holster is strong enough to deal with the vibrations and wind that you'd expect to have on a motorcycle? assuming I am using ym Sony a6300 with a small lens. Cheer's m8.

If you haven't already, check out Kriega's smaller dry packs. On a motorbike I think that a camera attached to my belt would be uncomfortable/irritating. It would be less problematic on a backpack strap, but that does share a fundamental issue with carrying a camera on my belt - in the event of a crash, I'd just as soon not have a camera and (glass) lens attached to my body.
@GriffinHammond
@GriffinHammond 7 жыл бұрын
I'm sure the camera wouldn't come out of the holster, but I'd be worried about the belt clip somehow coming off your pants while riding. Mine never moved, but I wasn't on a motorcycle.

The first thing I realized was how much I absolutely *hate* having the spider holster pin stabbing into the palm of my hand. I think it is poorly placed. I can never hold my camera comfortably. The alternative is spinning the plate around, but that creates problems when mounting to my Manfrotto 200pl plates. I still haven't found a solution that I like.

Griffin. Do you have a recommendation for a camera body/lens combo that totals $1500 +/-? I shoot interviews and basic sports broll for a sports team in BC, Canada. I also shoot Real Estate video and photos. Looking for something to tackle a few of these, with the ability to add to the package later. Currently looking at the Canon 77D.
@GriffinHammond
@GriffinHammond 7 жыл бұрын
The Panasonic G85 is a great camera, and at half the price of the GH5, comes with a 12-60mm, which would be a great real estate lens. If you don't need to be very tight for your sports b-roll, the 12-60mm could also handle that. bhpho.to/2xoj58t If you had more money to spend, and needed to go even wider for real estate, I'd recommend the new 8-18mm, and if you needed even tighter for sports, I'd recommend the 35-100mm or 100-400mm. There's also a 14-140mm that might serve all your needs well, but I worry that it's a little dark (f/4.0) and 14mm may not be quite as wide as you want for real estate, especially if you're shooting in 4K, because the G85 camera crops a little tighter in 4K.

These GH5 commercials promoting the camera as a fantastic stills camera are a bit ridiculous..I would never shoot a wedding on a MFT sensor for example
@GriffinHammond
@GriffinHammond 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure why you wouldn't. I shoot with micro 4/3 because I can get more done, faster with a camera that weighs less. Magazine editors and clients can't tell what sensor you shoot with. You should shoot with whatever camera suits your shooting style, and I know that artistic decisions have more impact than sensor choice.
@_rhapsodist
@_rhapsodist 7 жыл бұрын
But sensor size effects artistic freedom too because of DoF limitations and the low light capabilities (which a wedding demands highly) are far from bigger sensors.

I think the GH5 is a great stills camera and benefits from some of the drawbacks of full frame. Using a speedbooster to get loads of light without too much shallow depth of field is an example. Noise performance on the GH5 is impressive.
