Hello Gabriel! I like your videos...The one thing I would like to comment about is in regards to Machu Picchu. It's name means "old mountain", not "old person", as you said in the video. That is all. I am glad you enjoyed your visit over there.
@phoenixnmhesq6 жыл бұрын
Gabriel Traveler Is the trail that you hiked well marked and open to the public or is it something I would need a guide for?
@GabrielTravelerVideos5 жыл бұрын
@@phoenixnmhesq The trail is well marked and open to the public, no need for a guide. You just need some strong legs.
@GabrielTravelerVideos5 жыл бұрын
@@shaban60 Looks like I got it slightly wrong. Apparently "machu" means old person by itself and "picchu" definitely means peak, so together it does mean old mountain: "Machu Picchu, or Macchu Pikchu is called as such because of its Spanish originations as machu meaning old, old person and pikchu meaning peak; mountain or prominence with a broad base which ends in sharp peaks and hence, "old peak"."

I've been watching your videos for a few years now. Man, you certainly get around and it's inspiring to see someone that lives life to the fullest as well as documenting your travels while providing very useful information. It seems that many never do. I certainly would be interested in your book "Following My Thumb". I have had some escapes of wanderlust and hoping to leave out again soon! I'd say you most likely have thousands of very interesting stories to tell. There is certainly so much to see and experience in the world....a lot of catching up to do. Continue to inspire!

In 1982 Aguas was sheds with corrugated metal roofs. One semi decent hotel with its balcony over the river. One restaurant that had decent pancakes. It went out of business before my next time in Aguas in 1987. In 82 i soaked alone in a beautiful hotsprings above the village. In 87 I went in it again with my spouse and we got out of it quick because it was polluted. Both visits I walked the tracks before daylight to tye MP train station and caught a ride up with the MP hotel workers starting their day before the ruins were open. Both times we went in before daylight, mid December, and had the ruins to ourselves except for two one hour tours with tourists brought in from Cuzco on the soecial tourists only train that waited to take them back in one hour. Then we had the ruins to ourselves again. To see Aguas now as a town with paving stones, hotels and restaurants is a shocking transformation. I gather MP itself is now also a crowded place with long lines of tourists. Fascinating... not attractive. Parts of the Heraog movie, Fitzcarraldo was made on and by the river near MP. Both times at Aguas I stayed a week and was on MP and HP every day all day with nearly nobody else around except for those two one hour tours. The peaceful quiet of the entire region instilled a sensation in me I can feel today.

Gabriel - I don't know if you have heard about CHOQUEQUIRAO, it is another incan city very similar in structure and arquitecture to Machu Picchu, it is said to be 3 times larger in size compare to M.P., it is still being clean from all the vegetation covering it, the problem is there are not roads to the site, the only way to get there is by foot, and is not to far from M.P., also farther north in the amazon region is the fortress OF KUELAP, PERU is full of many unknown treasures that little by little are being revealed to the world. Enjoying your videos very much, I was in M.P. in January, but God willing next time I will follow your route and avoid all the extra costs. Keep having a wonderful trip and enjoying my country.

That is an awesome hike, last time I was there, I skipped the bus and went walking (though I did go on the bus on the way down, no energy left) keeping your own rythm, it's perfectly doable, I did it after the Salkantay trek and went up Huayna Picchu afterwards, and I'm by no means a gym maniac

That's true, I was too late because there's a quota of how many people are allowed through and I didn't get an early enough start. But the truth is, after the crazy hike to get up to Machu Picchu, I wasn't really up for more intense uphill hiking anyway. If I ever go back, I'd definitely love to visit Machu Picchu again. I would take the bus up there to save my legs, and then plan to do the hike up to Huayna Picchu. Stay tuned though because there will be another video coming exploring Machu Picchu more thoroughly.

You're thinking of the Inca trail, which sounds amazing as well. That starts from farther away, goes through the Andes for several days and is a way to skip taking the expensive train. Next time I go back to Peru I'd probably do that. But otherwise this is another option. You can take the train to Aguas Calientes and then do the hike or, if you're feeling lazy, catch a bus up there.
@ScaryFear6 жыл бұрын
Ah ok thank you for the advice. I would like to do that too but I worry that I can't carry a lot of stuff as I have a bad back so I can't carry my own tent and heavy stuff. I'd like to say I climbed something here so a 2 hour hike, probably 3 for me sounds good then a bus ride back down works great.

@GabrielTravelerVideos7 жыл бұрын
hi Stephanie, I was there the same time this video was posted, in November. You can visit throughout much of the year however you want to avoid going between December and March because apparently that is the rainy season. Going solo is definitely cheaper than with a tour group but depends on how you like to travel. I would suggest grabbing a guidebook such as a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide which will answer all of your questions more thoroughly and a lot more.

@GabrielTravelerVideos7 жыл бұрын
It wasn't a problem for me, but I've never had altitude issues and I've been much higher than this. So it just depends on the person. Also when I first arrived in Peru then I went by bus from Lima to the city of Arequipa which is at an elevation of about 7,600 feet, so that was a good midway point to acclimate to the higher elevations.

what time did you started going up??? seems that you went a litle bit late xD when i went there I started walking from the hotel at 6:30am(the plan was 6am xd) arrived at 7:40 and miss the tour guy up there xd here goes my tips for people that are going to machu picchu(sorry for the english) the circuit from cuzco to machu picchu is: cuzco city -van tryp(7 hours)-hidroelectrica train station-2 hour walk-aguas calientes town-1:30 hours climb-machu picchu 1.-never pay the first price they give you. only do that in aguas calientes(remote city people live only from tourist and is still insaly sheap) 2.- buy some travel pack in cuzco. you can save some money if you just get there by your own, but is not really that much like 20 dollar at most, and is really hard finding the transport, hotels, etc. for me that extra money is well expended.(the pack consist of: transfer from cuzco to hidroelectrica, one lunch, one dinner and one breackfast, the ticket to machu picchu and transfer from hidroelectrica to cuzco) 3.-be aware of climate, the road is hard. estimated time from cuzco to hidroelectrica is 6 to 7 hours. when I was there it took me 9 hours due to a collapse in the road and when I was going back from hidroelectrica I took me like 16 hour and a cold night in shorts, climbing to mud and a 4 hour standing bus drive due to 2 collapses...and well 15 extra soles 4.-buy the 3 days pack tour...if you buy the 2 days you will have tu climb to machu picchu and then return to hidroelectrica before 2:30 pm all in the same day 5.-Is not worth it to take the train from hidroelectrica to aguas calientes...is a 2 hour easy walk, and is pretty fun to do it and well, the train is expensive 6.-walk arround and know aguas calientes the first day( if you go by the estimated time you should arrive at 5 to 5:30 pm), the second day you will expend in machu picchu and when you get back to aguas calientes you will just want to rest 7.-you have to know there are more places to go than machu picchu(in machu picchu itself), wherever you choose (I recomend huainapicchu) take the second shift so you wont have to be in a hurry. you can buy the tickets at the agency you buy the tour pack. you dont wanna miss that famous selfie of you looking down to machu picchu( yeah thats huainapicchu). know that there are times from this other places. the second shift starts at 10am and you must get back to machu picchu at 1pm. 8.-start the climbing the earliest you can. try to get to machu picchu by 7, most 7:30...you dont wanna miss the tour guide(if you miss him, just try to pass unnoticed in another group, I did that xD) or you will only see rocks and no history, the tour last like 2 hours, and the second shift to huainapicchu starts at 10am so keep that in mind 9.- know your times, the expected time from aguas calientes to machu picchu is 1:30 hours and from machu picchu to huainapicchu is 1 hour going up and 1 hour going down. 10.-know that in machu picchu there is more climbing to do, and the huainapicchu climbing is harder(but shorter) than machu picchu..so if you think you cant do it(I saw a lot of people gave up in the way) take the bus from aguas calientes to machu picchu, it is not expensive and you wont miss anything, trust me, the climbing is just for the experience, nothing more. 11.-when you get back to machu picchu from huainapicchu or wherever you went, know that machu picchu closes at 5, so that is the time for all the photos you want. 12.-in the 3 day, you have to know that the transfer from hidroelectrica to cuzco leaves at 2:30 at the most...so start your walking from aguas calientes arround 11:30 to 12,,,dont be like me that every walk that I did, I did it in a hurry there are my tips...I know that I forget somethings but well, with that you should be good

My husband and I are planning a trip to Peru: Lima, Cuzco, Aguas Calientes, and Machu Picchu. We admire how you travel- independent and affordable! How much would you say you spent a day, on average?
@GabrielTravelerVideos7 жыл бұрын
Awesome, thanks. I think I averaged around $30-35 a day, but I was mostly staying in hostels and cheap rooms. If you check some of the online websites such as hostelworld and booking.com then you can get a good idea of room prices, which will give you a better idea of what you will pay, depending on what you prefer. Food can be quite cheap, but the nicer restaurants in Cusco and Aguas Calientes are more expensive.

Stephanie Gassman If you have to travel on a tight budget be careful. Remember you have to pay for drinking water and there are always unexpected expenses. I don’t know if you have done your trip yet? Since it’s been 2 years since request. We are just finishing 3 1/2 months tour in Peru. Very enjoyable. But it does cost more than we planed. But than we are retired and we know we won’t be back here. So good luck with your trips. And everything depends on your age and attitude.

I put all my videos about getting to Machu Picchu into one longer video, here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJLCdIedaJ2Ig5Y But in short, I went by bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, bus again to Hidroelectrica and then hiked along the train tracks to Aguas Calientes. I did it independently, but you can buy it as a package in Cusco for really cheap, I think $100 or so which might even include the ticket into Machu Picchu.

Amazing! How did you get from Lima to Aguas Calientes? Thanks mate.
@katsumiwatanabe55468 жыл бұрын
you can go by bus or by airplane a bus ticket with great accommodations is around 30-45 bucks but you can get cheaper tickets at 25 dollars the airplane tickets should be around $130, depends on the time of the year.

How long is the hike from Aquas Calientes to the start of the hike of the trail to Machu Piccu? You know, the 1,749 km ;)
@GabrielTravelerVideos7 жыл бұрын
It's about a mile from Aguas Calientes to the bottom of the mountain, then another mile up the mountain to Machu Picchu.

Do you need a permit to go to Machu Picchu? I thought only guided tours were allowed. Amazing video but why walk when there are buses.
@GabrielTravelerVideos9 жыл бұрын
You don't need a permit, just your entrance ticket, and you don't need a guide. I like hiking but that hike up there was definitely a doozy. Might be better to take the bus there and walk down if you were in the mood for a hike.

Hello Gabe, i have asthma. Do you think I'd be s good idea for me to go to machu picchu? How was breathing there?
@GabrielTravelerVideos5 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, I'm really not sure about that since I don't know a lot about asthma. It could be an issue. I would search around for some more information from people who are more knowledgeable about asthma and hiking in higher elevations.
