Walks in Wales: Climbing Cadair Idris, Snowdonia.

Georgie, my daughter, and I are climbing the amazing Cadair Idris, the second tallest mountain in Wales and part of the Snowdonia National Park.
I have climbed some of the mountain before, bust this time we reach the summit and we are exhilarated that the achievement. I hope you will enjoy watching our efforts as we make out way to the top.

Dear Richard and Georgie Thank you so much for reminding me of this great climb. I did it with a friend many years ago. We arrived at the Idris Gates at about 5pm, after a long drive, and climbed to the lake, where we bivvied for the night. The sky was clear, and after dark there was an amazing meteor shower, which must have lasted for several hours. The sky was covered with long thin purple trails. Next day, we were woken early by the rustling sounds of sheep, and found ourselves submerged in a thick mist. We made for the top, and shortly before we arrived at the trig point, we rose up into another world, above the cloud, bathed in bright sunlight. As far as the eye could see, the black summits of the peaks of Snowdonia were laid out in front of us, riding above the white sea of cloud.

Hi Richard and Georgie ,I've watched this Vid twice now ,why ? firstly cos you got the weather just right ,secondly the narrative on the hike is great and you have a muffler on the mike so you dont get the normal wind noise ,unlike other ppl who have trekked up Cadair Idris .So Thankyou .Ive done the 3 peaks and yet Iv'e completed Cadair Idris 6 times now ,last time 2 years ago in June in the dark just to see the Sunrise and photograph it ,I'm 60 now and plan another trip up In May 2020 with a friend .I love Cadair Idris ,for the water falls ,the greenery on the steepest part ,the beauty of the Lake and its less well known ,not like Sainsburys on a Saturday when you get to the top !! Unlike any of the 3 peaks .Richard ,next time take a OS map ,there is a lovely circular route back down to the waterfalls :) Bear .

I have amazing memories of a lovely holiday in Wales. We stayed on a campsite in Tallylyn - the walk to Cader Idris runs right by the campsite but it wasn't nearly as busy! Mind you I'm talking about 20 years ago. Scenery stays the same. It's a very steep climb but very beautiful. The view's are well worth all the effort at the top.

I think that beach you saw from the top of Cadair Idris was Barmouth. I've never climbed up there but I can see those mountains in the distance from my windows. I read the lake at the top is shallow around the edges but drops away to 150ft in the centre.

Simply Beautiful: I'm doing this next Tuesday (23/7/19) Weather looks amazing ! Though at 63, I'm still aching from Moel Hebog (Beddgelert) which I climbed (21/7/19) today. 50 metre viz and 50 mph winds..... Not great. So good to see you with your lovely daughter, doing these climbs together. Actually inspiring, Sir. My daughter, Emily, is getting married in NZ next Feb 2020. She lives and works near Wellington. I always found it harder walking down harder on the legs than going up. I have walked a few in the Lake District and some give you the impression that if you miss your footing you won't stop until you get to the bottom.

Yes, there is a technique for coming down steep inclines. It's called 'praying you don't fall'.

The lake is around 200 feet deep. Myth and legend has a large pillar at the bottom. Now technical divers can go to the bottom somebody had a look and there it was the pillar sticking out of the bottom.

It's often mistaken as being the 2nd tallest mountain in Wales due to the 3 peaks challenge but it's not actually. It's the 9th tallest IN Wales and tallest in 'mid Wales' although more North than Mid

altitude sickness? lol. it's not high enough for that. you're probably just feeling sick because it's a good work out. it looks nice a walk. it's one i haven't done yet.

Done this walk several times. It is quite fabulous even though a bit of a stamina test with all those steps. Sticking to the path is crucial. What you have to be careful of is the birds make their nests in hollows in the ground which can be covered by grass. If you stray from the path you run the risk of stepping on birds eggs. The birds have more right to be there than we do.

Regarding descendants - it does make me laugh when you refer to these historic people as your family - of course, most people when they check their lineage in the UK will also be descended from the same or similar lines, so I am sorry to say you are not the only one who can claim them. :) But it does make me smile.

Hi Richard, great video!! I climbed this in the mid 90s with a youth outdoors company based in Betws-y-Coed. I don't remember using the path though. Is there a more direct steeper way to the lake? This brought back some good memories, thanks. 👍

Hi Richard ,I actually prefer Cader Idris over Snowdon due to the lack of ppl,climbed Cader Idris 4 times now ,last time I started 2 yrs ago at about 1am to reach the summit as the Sun came up ,much cooler at night time .To my surprise there was a Mountainbiker sleeping in a tent at the top ,I always do the climb in a circular way ,so as to not come up and down the same way .Great lil vid ,you seemed to enjoy it both of you ,Next week I'm doing it with a GSD Nala :)

I have yet to climb Snowdon, but loved this climb and agree it is less populated, which I always prefer. Georgie has gone on to climb Snowdon on her own!

I'm pretty sure that I could do that walk Richard but I must say that once in gym class I sprained my ankle and since then I've not been really eager to do such walks as you're doing. You didn't reach the peak of Mount Everest but you came pretty close.

The route taken was to start at the coffee hut near the official car park and work up from there. Coming down, pass the but on the summit and keep going north and then head down the path to the west. Thanks for watching.

It's not even in the top 10 or the highest in mid Wales. I think it scraped into top 20. All 14 highest peaks are in the Snowdon Massif, Glyders and Carneddaus

Richard, one of your opening comments is that Cadair Idris is the "second tallest mountain in Wales". Did you do your homework? There are a number of peaks in Wales higher that Cadair.
