My great auntie lived at the Ritz the last 15 years of her life. She was a classical musician and much of her work was in Hollywood and at Pinewood Studios. Her husband was in the navy but he died soon after the Suez Crisis. During her dotage, her children took turns to take her to the theatre and opera at least twice a week. She was from another age and extremely glamorous and her husband a very handsome career naval officer. Both had brains and came from a poor lower middle class family of teachers and civil servants.

I love the Ritz I worked for the Ritz Carlton Pasadena California. That hotel is very 1920s 30s 40s. If you stay at a hotel like the Ritz, it should make you feel like a throwback to when people actually had manners etiquette and civility. It’s lovely that there’s a place still around that you can dress up dress for the occasion and be treated like a gentleman and lady. We used to have to say we are ladies and gentlemen treating ladies and gentlemen. The stool when you went to the dining table is for the woman’s purse. Thank you for sharing your experience. And it is important for you to kindly tell the front desk about what you found in the tub or whatever else might have been out of place because it is greatly appreciated. I hope you had a marvelous time and we’re happy to have an experience where you were treated with respect and dignity.

Hey Tim, I was lucky enough to stay in the ritz 2005. I won a competition with first direct & we had a package of dinner, 1 night stay & 2 x ticket for west end show (choose phantom Of the opera) and finally breakfast. We arrived on time and advised our room wasn’t ready, we were Directed to the bar and it was £7.50 for half a pint(turns out complimentary) then the manger approached us to say that our room was double booked & offered us an upgrade of £1400 suite room per night! I questioned it as I thought they were trying to charge us more, but it was complimentary as the room wasn’t ready/double booked. The suite was bigger than our bungalow(at the time) and it had new lcd tvs in the kitchen, bathroom and living room. The service and friendliness was second to none. We're stayed two nights recently in room 506, facing Piccadilly like yours was. I was amazed the windows weren't triple glazed because the noise from the road echoes right up from the buildings opposite, especially if a performance car or bike is having its leg's stretched, or if the police are on their way somewhere. We thought the room was a bit tired tbh, and not up to the standard of Claridge's. The star of the show at the Ritz is undoubtedly the restaurant/dining room. The decor, the food (I too had the Beef Wellington - stunning) and the military precision of the dining room staff was something to behold. That little stool btw, is for the ladies to put their handbags on.

Several years ago I stayed at the Ritz in Madrid for a few weeks. It was a marvelous hotel in every way. The hotel is located across the street from the Prado and my room had french doors that opened to the Prado’s VIP entrance which was interesting. The room had beautiful panelling and Aubusson carpeting that was quite interesting. Every repair was signed by the restorer in the piece. It was a beautiful oriental style that was cushy when walking around on it. It had 2 wardrobes on either side of the bed. The bathroom had a great overhead shower and the bidet water had a pattern coming out which was a nice feature. When I arrived in Madrid a Ritz driver picked me up and took me on a bit of a ride to see some of the area around the hotel. I waited in one of the lobby seating areas and they brought me the equivalent to a High tea. I was exhausted from the overnight flight and hungry. My daughter was living in Madrid at the time in a study abroad program and when she walked in they brought her to me which was just another special touch of the personal service. My daughter wasn’t going to stay with me but changed her mind quickly which amused me. She loved the hotel. We had breakfast every morning and they brought her a small bottle of Heinz Ketchup in a covered silver tray for her potatoes. They missed nothing. Every time I left the hotel they took my key and handed it back to me seamlessly at the door. Generally when I sat in the lobby for any time there was a security person that stood a few feet behind me which was a curiosity. I read somewhere that the hotel had great security and that when Yasser Arafat visited he didn’t need to bring his security detail because the Ritz security was topnotch. One thing I found out by accident was that they don’t allow people to just walk in and look around the hotel. I invited my daughter’s host to dinner at the Ritz while there and didn’t think to mention it to anyone - so we waited and waited in the lobby for her and then my daughter went outside to see if something was wrong the woman was there. I don’t think she had a cell phone with her. The dinner turned out fine - no problem - once I understood the rules. My daughter’s host was also quite impressed with the restaurant - including their olive oil which was a superior quality. They number their oils in Spain - something we don’t do in the US. All in all, it was probably the nicest hotel overall that I ever stayed at because of the extra customer service. The service during the entire stay was the best. There wasn’t one thing I would have changed.

Your toilet incident resonated with me. 😂 years ago I went to an Italian restaurant in Bath called Sotto Sotto, really lovely but priced around the same as a Prezzo but the service was insane! There were so many waiters and they weren’t in your face but always attentive and always topping up drinks. I asked one where the toilet was and with a “of course, this way sir, follow me”, he escorted me to the single disabled toilet, with every other waiter nodding and acknowledging me as I passed by. I used the facilities, stepped outside and found the waiter had been waiting outside the entire time to then escort me back to my seat (all the nods again from the other staff) and tuck me back in- including placing my napkin back on my lap. It was hilarious! 20:57

I am envious, what a lovely suite and fabulous service. The price reflects the incredible attention to detail, standard of training and staff to guest ratio, very few hotels would take the trouble to provide a toddler sized robe or baby products in room. The beef wellington looked perfect and delicious. It's fine to ask the restaurant staff about any dish or ingredient you're not familiar with, they will be happy to tell you about them or find out.

Love the London Ritz. I was fortunate enough to have lived in London during the 80’s and 90’s. Afternoon Tea at the Ritz included entertainment on the weekends back in the late 80’s. you had to book way in advance. It was always a fabulous experience. I sure miss those beautiful days. It’s so nice to see the Ritz has maintained the same high standards.

In my opinion, I appreciate their preservation on the high quality 19th century cultivated design and amentities in the room. It is a hygentic design without radiation from the electric shockets near the bed. I can deeply feel the history and culture of the U.K. in the hotel. Sometimes, it is boring to live in the modern hotel design which is lack of a sense of humanity.

It’s all about economic mechanism when the price is derived at the equilibrium from the quantity demand and supply. For example, a table for 2 , a fine dining dinner with 2 glasses of wine in central London for £300 sth is an average price. Nothing to be surprised when they always have demand. You will get used to this crazy phenomenon if you live in the Central London. The reality is quite cruel.

Lovely video. I’m not sure the Ritz would be very pleased to have their decor described as 90s, though😅 It’s classic English country house, which often incorporates some floral chintz, with quite an eclectic mix of furniture from different eras. It far predates the 90s, but has always been emulated from those by aspirations, through the ages. I hope you had a lovely time with your wife and son

You have such a beautiful family and all of you deserve to win an award for your honesty and dedication to informing us about all things in travel. What a delightful episode. Thank you for your honesty on the Ritz. The room was beautiful, you both were handsomely dressed and your son’s appearance in his robe was adorable. As a side note: I agree with you on not liking the smoke smell. I’m actually quite surprised that the Ritz is still allowing, smoking, not only in some of their rooms, but even with a cigar bar in the building, which can only leave dreaded musty smell. Cheers and blessings to all three of you.

I'm also surprised they allow this. If they have a cigar lounge, you would think that it would be in a secluded, enclosed and well ventilated area? If they did allow smoking rooms, then why not only have them on a few of the top floors so that the smoke/smell doesn't waft throughout the rest of the hotel? (With the type of demanding guests that they get, I could see them getting a few guests staying in top level suites for longer stays that want to smoke).

I know that London is very different from the south coast but I'd recommend The Grand at Eastbourne. Not as exquisite as the Ritz London but for a decadent night with a 5 star service and fresh coastal air at a reasonable price then it's highly advised. Dinner, bed and breakfast and parking is a good deal.

Loved your review. I just spent 9 nights at the Ritz Carlton in Naples, FL. My total bill (lunches only) was $6,000. This includes all the beach services in front of the hotel directly on The Gulf of Mexico. I did the math: it’s about the same as a 9 day cruise on an upscale cruise ship. I’ve been going to this same hotel since 2016 and it never disappoints. You might try it sometime! All the rooms are newly renovated in a modern, relaxing color palette. Casper will love all the pool options!!

Well, the decor is very French. Lovely, not flashy, showy, too new and tacky, love it. This is a true European look and good furniture is meant to last, like good clothes. I expect everything to last a minimum of 10 years, including shoes, and hopefully much longer. Paying for quality meant to last for decades is always worth it. Love your room. No one wants to walk into a dark, chilly, room. Too gloomy. Fruit knives and forks, of course. Lovely. Better to stay one night in a wonderful place, instead of a hovel where you might catch something like funky flu! This is beautiful, TY for the tour.
