Whip snake eating grapes (hunting grapes)

I found this snake attempting, and sometimes succeeding at eating unripe grapes, that I had cast aside from pruning. It had difficulty getting them off the bunch.
The snake managed to eat 4 grapes while I was looking. I think it also hunted other things that were trying to eat the grapes. When it got ready for a pull, it would move its entire body in the direction of the pull. Will it die from indigestion?
We can thank this snake for being so photogenic. Apart from being venomous, they look like a decent pet.

These yellow-faced whip snakes regularly eat lizards & lizard eggs. It's the major part of their diet. This individual thinks it found a lizard nest, particularly since these grapes are somewhat desiccated and therefor even more so resemble and feel like lizard eggs. It made a mistake in identification, and will likely regurgitate the grape at some point... hopefully, for its sake.

The snake is following the scent of a bird or a lizard which has been feeding on the grapes. It swallows the grapes that have a strong prey scent believing it has caught the prey..

I'm guessing the grapes must have been warmed enough by the sun, and the smell of small prey items inside of the pile, that this snake's feeding mechanism could have gotten triggered. Really weird.

Frugivores and carnivores share a similar digestive tract. And Chimps and monkeys will eat meat sometimes and cats and dogs will eat fruits sometimes. So maybe snakes can eat Fruits?

Yeah. Maybe brown snakes eat golf balls and ping pong balls. Everything about humans is a hazard to our wildlife. It's possible that this species does eat fruit. Mammalian carnivore metabolism is usually pretty crap at digesting plant toxins; see dogs and chocolate/macadamia. Reptiles might be much better. Goannas seem to eat everything.

python boi They are carnivorous, that's why this is really odd behavior 🤔 Also why there seem to be biologists in the comment section asking for more info and a contact xD In all honesty, I'd agree with the others perspectives and it thinks they're eggs, with the warmed temperatures outside likely warming the grapes to just the right temperature. They're about the right size too- and as someone else pointed out, it did eat another animal at around five minutes, showing it was attempting to hunt at least. Still odd behavior for a snake

It's not odd behavior considering all basic kinds of animals were once herbivorous. Yes, snakes are generally carnivorous today (ever since the Fall of Man in Eden about 6,000 years ago), but that doesn't necessarily mean they can't go back to their original diet to some extent. We are here witnessing merely a glimpse of what things might have looked like in the paradise of the early Earth.

They can't get nourishment from plant matter and won't try to eat something that doesn't smell like meat/eggs/fish/insect/any other animal matter. Snakes are obligate carnivores, they biologically rely on the flesh of animals for nourishment. They won't even try to eat something that doesn't, for lack of a better expression, "smell like protein." Something is wrong with this snake, either its senses themselves aren't functioning properly or it's lost the ability to properly process certain sensory information within its brain. The only other explanation is that these grapes somehow are rich enough in protein for the snake to consider them worth the large amount of effort it's clearly putting into getting them. The other strange thing is that this isn't at all how snakes typically feed, they don't tear pieces from the whole, their jaws and teeth aren't designed to do that. Not an atheist or trying to naysay religion, it's just that something is wrong with this snake. It might be suffering and it feels irresponsible to say "it was meant to be this way."

well crocodiles will actively seek out fruit to eat something that was looked on as an anomaly by scientists but then there was to many reports of crocodiles doing it so an animal we though were carnivores turned out to be some what omnivores. One of the reasons they might be so successful. Also some sharks will eat sea grass so you never know.

I've found black and green snakes eating both grapes and strawberries from my garden. And, I shot a large black racer that was in my front yard a few years back and threw the body in the pasture. Later in the day my husband and I watched cow egrets feasting on the carcass. We later walked over to see what they left and were surprised to find four large peanuts in the shell within the snakes skeletal remains.
