I believed for many years that Wallis was unfairly blamed for Edward's abdication, but the more I learn about her life and her interactions with other people, the less I think she was a victim of her circumstances. Outside of what seems to be her own words (and we have recent proof of how some types of people will lie through their teeth and discredit everyone around them to achieve their goals - or to blame someoe for the goals not being achieved) there is not much to show that she was a good person or that she cared about other people. I become increasingly convinced that neither she nor Edward expected that he actually would have to go through with the abdication of the throne. I think they both expected that Edward was so much loved by the people of the UK that there would be public pressure to let him marry Wallis and make her his queen. Presumably they were quite surprised when the abdication was supported rather than stopped and they found themselves without a throne and a country and stripped of royal privileges, which Edward probably thought were his birthright. I do not think Wallis ever forgave Edward for the step down, which living in exile and losing their standing in high society, was. So many reports reveal that she was horrible to him, and his life-long obsession of getting her an HRH-title seems a desperate attempt to please a furious and scorn wife.
@deemariedubois4916 Жыл бұрын
Yes Wallis treated ‘her David’ terribly but Wallis knew how to please a man. David liked her humiliating him. The married mistress he had before Wallis had letters from him where he says he’s been a bad naughty boy, and needed to be thoroughly spanked. To each their own but how stupid of the Prince to write such revealing letters. I have read that his father, the King, was a strict disciplinarian who frequently used the rod on his sons. The King knew his son’s weaknesses, knew that the heir apparent suffered bouts of morose, knew his son lacked the education needed to be King simply because he would not apply himself to his tutors frustrations. So George V had severe reservations about Prince Edward, saying "After I am dead, the boy will ruin himself in twelve months" and "I pray God that my eldest son will never marry and that nothing will come between Bertie and Lilibet and the throne.”❤

Queen Victoria's mother was German. The name of the royal house was Saxe-Coburg Gotha, a distinctly German name. Britain may have not taken part in the holocaust but you were enslaving people via the trans-Atlantic slave trade and via colonization. The only difference between Britain and Germany IS language.

Nothing to do with Edward or any of the Royals, they didn’t win the war for Britain, that was the lives and deaths of ordinary men and women and the canny decisions by the Government led by Winston Churchill. Thankfully present day Queens and Kings have no power, they just get to nod, sign and agree with what’s been decided by the real powers.

Wallis and Ernest enjoyed the perks and privileges of associating with David. They played fast and loose with their marriage both aware of David's increasing affection. Wallis cut in on Thelma with David. Mary cut in on Wallis with Ernest. I do not pity the any of them for the consequences of poor judgment and weak ethics. Wallis did not have to marry David. She had the funds to live a comfortable single life. It was only that women of her set consider marriage a necessity. However the scandal that descended on Wallis made her unacceptable to any decent man of substance. In that sense, David was her only option for her preferred lifestyle.

I’ve never understood why he was considered handsome, I thought he looked a bit effeminate and weak, he certainly didn’t have the height and presence of his 3 brothers. Perhaps there was a fuss made because of his position and title. He was lucky he was given a title of any kind after abdicating as that world of hierarchy he had thumbed his nose at. His wife was also fortunate to get a Duchess title and not being given the HRH was the proper decision. The shocking realisation they must have had as the months went on that they were not going to be allowed to pick up where they left off and come back to Britain setting up what would have become a rivalry between the new King and the ex king. Consequences the ridiculous selfish little man never expected, the entitlement is mind blowing.

Imagine Edward being king throughout WW2. That would have been awful because he just had no interest in the work that would have been required of him as king; he might even have teamed up with Hitler or at least been a traitor, giving Hitler secret information. George VI and the Queen Mother were thrust into being king and queen but they rose to the occasion and became much beloved by their people. They also prepared their daughter to be queen and did a marvelous job because she had a very long reign and lived through wars, numerous prime ministers, the Windsor fire, her children's divorces, Diana's death, and civic unrest and changes. Wallis was a social climber and made many mistakes that caused her to be unhappy much of the time. She wanted to be a social butterfly, she enjoyed hobnobbing with socialites and royals. Once Edward glommed onto her, she was trapped. I think both made terrible errors -- Wallis could have been happy with Ernest if she had found something useful to do other than giving parties. But NOOOO, she was drawn to the royals as a moth to a flame. Poor Ernest. And then she keeps writing to ERNEST complaining about her lot and how lonely she is. Had I been him I would have just rolled my eyes. It must have been extremely boring to live with a man who followed one around like a puppy. What a yawn. They deserved each other and did very little with their lives to contribute to the world. And the royal family NEVER forgot Edward's betrayal and choice for a woman who was very similar to him -- bored, boring, walking through life without making a ripple. It must have been really deadening.

$225 in 1922 would equal $3,990 in 2024. I could certainly manage on $4k per month. With that income and getting a job (something that Wallis NEVER did) she could have lived reasonable well on an income, that if she worked would have been $60k (2024 dollars) a year with no rent; because, they were living with relatives. She WASN'T suffering! You forgot to mention they had to wait cir Ernest to get a DIVORCE. Apparently, she wasn't interested in single men.

Wallis was unfairly maligned. It's obvious she didn't want to marry Edward, and in letters discovered many years later, she still pined for her ex-husband Ernest and expressed regrets about having married Edward. As far as Edward's threats to kill himself if Wallis abandoned him, that kind of emotional blackmail demonstrated how unfit he was to wear the crown. If he had committed suicide, Wallis could not have been blamed. Despite a life filled with parties and tours, their lives were empty. It's anyone's guess how Edward would have behaved during the war. His pro-German sympathies made him unsuitable, yet he might have rallied to the British cause. I take strong exception to Queen Mary's reason for placing the blame for King George VI's premature death. It wasn't the stress of reigning during the war that killed him. It was his compulsive cigarette smoking that gave him lung cancer. Winston Churchill was under tremendous stress during the war but he didn't develop lung cancer. The same is true of just about everyone else involved in the war. Wallis had the misfortune of having outlived Edward for 14 years. That must have been cruel. As a proponent of euthanasia, considering her many terrible health conditions, I believe she would have been better off pulling the plug.
@LadyCat1837 ай бұрын
Not Queen Mary. It was the Queen Mum who blamed Wallis. A little unfairly, after all Wallis did not force King George to smoke.

I think the British royalty and other elite snobs just didn't like Wallace, jealous of her charm and being an American. They were pretty good at their smear campaign. I think the press were also vicious animals to her. I think if she would have been given a chance, she would have made a wonderful queen, with great diplomatic skills and fashion sense. Not saying that King George and Queen Elizabeth were not great, but Edward and Wallace would have been too. I think the Nazi collaboration rumors were stretched too far. Her letters to her ex-husband were out of loving friendship and frustration. She truly loved Edward.

The Royal family and the government despised Wallace and David, Edward VIII, They would do anything to discredit him. They were not the the only ones that visited Germany and met with Hitler. I don’t know what the truth is . I look at all of this as a soap opera-not much has changed in the royal family today, e.g., Megan, and Harry.
