Isn't that similar to what "nesting" workflow is...? Except that you don't have to export the cut. I'm not sure about the hard drive part in nesting. Nesting workflow wouldn't make it any easier for the hard drive i guess.

This happens at 33:20. +Sam Fuller made up "top-layer-skin" for how Walter Murch creates an adjustment layer the length of the project and drops that on the top track. He adds an effect VIDEO > Clip Name and in effect controls sets the source to track 1. He adds another effect VIDEO > Timecode and generates a timecode for the sequence (I think that's what he's done here). It's a super cool way to deal with a project with tons of clips from various sources. I create a lot of event videos sourced from various cameras and even smartphones so this will be super helpful to identify where a clips originates.

This is invaluable I only wish there was more of it and we could watch Walter work on a project stood at his work station from start to finish. Understandably summarized to some extent as it would be months worth of footage, but I would happily watch hours of him at work. Interviews and docs are great plus there's no shortage of software tutorials, however something like this is really lacking online. Please Walter anyone in the industry make a video like this so we can all share in your wisdom. In the blink of an eye is a fantastic read but we can learn so much more from watching professionals at work. I'd happily pay for something like this and sure many others out there would also.

I've never used FCP. I learnt editing in premiere and have continued to use it ever since. Short films, music videos, commercials... all done on premiere. But now, after FCPX 10.3, I started getting curious as I heard a lot of people talking about how slick it had become after the whole iMovie pro debacle. I've been dabbling around a bit and I'm starting to like what's in there. A lot of my premiere fondness is part of my muscle memory but there are more than just a few things that's really tempting in FCPX. So I'm giving it a shot for my next project. As someone who's completely new to FCP, I don't have the bitterness of being screwed over by FCP from 7 to 10. So I can approach it just as I approached premiere 10 years back. But man! I can't even begin to imagine how people must have felt when Apple screwed things up with 10. I mean when you lose people like Walter, it's safe to say, you've lost the plot.

Watching this in Sept. of 2022 🙂 As an editor with 30 years experience who is just getting into film editing, I got some good tips from this! As a Davinci Resolve user (currently v18), I wonder if he’s tried using it. I used Premiere for years but was never a fan; switched to Resolve as my primary NLE in 2018.

it's actually the trim feature. Was looking for this for a really long time. Found it by accident when i double clicked between two video clips in the transition point (where a square bracket symbol appears.)

Avid has tons of legacy problems and FCP suffers from the mutilation apple did to it to appease the huge consumer market. So PP is the way to go in order to get results quick, easy and still professionally.

Last summer I tried skydiving and they put together a video for us. Being an editor, I had to ask what they used. The skydiving/photographer/editor was using Vegas Pro. They had a room packed with PCs running Vegas Pro. They handed you a video in less then 20 minutes and it looked great. They're making a killing off those videos. I've been cutting for 30 years and have used Premiere, Avid and Final Cut. I don't think it really matters what you use... it's like asking a writer what word processor he uses.

Yep but Adobe can pay anyone to make them look still relevant... In 2021 most creative circles are trying to leave Adobe (capture one, affinity, avid, resolve...) and it began with amateurs and semi pro but now even in big pro circles lot are switching... Language everybody. Language. You can get exactly the same output from either program. The NLE doesn't make the editor, and they can all encode outside of the NLE if you have issues with the encoding.

Hm. Seeing this great editor working in such slow and clumsy way of trimming, dragging or editing ... frankly, I'm not sure if that's a great promotion for Premiere Pro. Seriously - who trims with mouse clicks instead of entering (+/-) frames on keyboard? Who drags an audio-edit instead of just mark and hit 'extend'? And who uses razor-blade? The skin-layer only makes sense if you have performance issues. I think Walter should go back to his old chum, that - by the way - supports 64 audio-tracks as well now.

Teutonika, Walter Murch has won three Academy Awards for editing. I think he recorded his video not long after winning the ACE and PrimeTime Emmy awards for Best Editing for Television. I've been using Premiere since the 1990's, but still found Murch's advice amazingly valuable. Was wondering what your qualifications were for trashing his technique?
