Ask me about my 2020 F250 Lariat 4x4 Tremor 6.7L Diesel. At 6 months old, 7,500 miles, it simply stopped working. Fuel pump ate itself and sent shrapnel through my engine. Took my local Ford dealer 4 weeks to identify the problem (which is amazing to me given that fuel pump issues have been the subject of class action lawsuits for nearly 10 years) and they're still waiting on the "Contamination kit" which is a bundle of parts that will replace the entire fuel delivery system of my truck. (I'm told parts are backordered.). So my BRAND NEW, $70,000+ truck has been at the dealer for 6 weeks (as of tomorrow) with no ETA known on parts. Even after the fuel delivery system is replaced, I'll have a truck that's had metal shavings pumped through the engine due to a part that Ford knew was faulty. Very bummed, and thinking about going back to a gas burner. (For the record, every major US manufacturer uses the same faulty fuel pump (a Bosch CP4) on Diesel engines, and just about each manufacturer has been sued.

For you this is a good choice. For the guy making the video, so long as he sells once his warranty is up, he made the better choice with the diesel. In 125k miles he probably won't use the warranty, but is at least covered if he does need it. Anything over 100k without warranty can be a money pit nightmare in a hurry with diesels nowadays. Own then under warranty. The people that own them out of warranty will be truck broke

I purchased a '19 F350 w/6.2 gas engine running through the 4.30 axle that allows me 22k lbs. GCWR (I tow a 41', 16k lb horse trailer w/ living quarters). I previously towed this trailer with my old 7.3 F350 without issue but did not want the additional costs of ownership of the newer diesels with some fairly well documented issues with the 6.7 diesel problems; I chose the gas engine to avoid any diesel-related issues. Comparisons of my very reliable 7.3 (owned 20 years, bought in '99 new): 20mpg unloaded, 11 to 12mpg towing my trailer. The new 6.2: 14mpg unloaded, 8mpg towing. The fuel costs are a wash in my area - there is a $0.60 to $0.70 difference per gallon between gas and diesel thus no real appreciable difference in fuel cost towing. Power when towing up 6 to 7 degree grades between the two engines: less shifting in the diesel (a 6mt) but the auto in the 6.2 does very well albeit at a somewhat higher rpm (diesel torque was 500 lb-ft over a fairly large rpm band, the gas engine torque is 430 lb-ft over a more narrow band around 3800 rpm and has 150 more hp) and seems to pull with somewhat less effort. There was no exhaust brake on my old diesel - lots of wheel braking down hill but the 6.2 auto is surprisingly good at downshifting to engine brake decelerating 11 tons total on the downgrade. Agree that the newer diesels have even more torque and power but I have no problems at all with what the 6.2 can accomplish and do not need to look forward to clogged EGR coolers, radiator leaks, turbo issues, etc. down the road regardless of warranty coverage. As with anything YMMV but the Wandering Weekends guy is happy with his and I am very happy with mine as well. Good video, good discussion.

I used to work for a Ford Dealer. By my estimate, 90% of people who bought F-250's & F-350's were folks who had a 1/2 ton truck then got a bigger boat or trailer. They then had a new truck (and a trailer) payment. When I bought my F-350 (Diesel) it cost about $500 more than an F-250. I later got a bigger trailer without concern or additional cost. I'm a regular guy who can only afford one upgrade at a time...for me an F-350 was the way to go.

So TRUE. The longer you have it the more you appreciate the diesel. I recently purchased a used 2016 Ford F250 (Lariat trim) with 55,000 miles for far less than a new 2019. Glad I went from my 2017 F150 (XLT trim) to this truck. What a difference in pulling our TT. We live in Houston, TX area and we do not plan on off-roading so the non-4-wheel drive was best for us and we gain a few hundred pounds towing capacity no being 4-wheel drive. Yes maintenance is higher on the diesel but if you do your own basic work (oil changes, fuel filter changes, etc.) it's not too bad. Can't say enough about this diesel. It's just great. The 3/4 ton SWD coupled with our Hensley hitch, can't beat it. As a result of this new to us truck, we purchased a new TT. Our new TT is 38' with three slides. We took a 6 week trip to Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota and boy was this combination great. Great video too by the way.

Thanks for a great video! Great realistic insight for someone on the fence. For my application, there's no significant financial advantage either way due to 20% average differential between gas/diesel in my part of the country. I want diesel simply for that relaxed feeling the low RPM torque diesel provides. My only hangup with diesel is a big one; I hunt and fish a lot and I can spend more than 10 days cruising rough dirt roads along the river/forest areas in the mountains, 1-2 miles at a time. Just the kind of usage you really don't want for diesel with EGR and DPF as regen cycles become a real issue. No highways for miles. For that reason, I'm waiting for the 7.3L unless a great deal on a 6.2 comes along. Again, great video!

I recently upgraded from a 1/2 ton (2018 Ford F150 Lariat with 3.5 EB) to 3/4 ton (2019 F250 Platinum 6.7 Diesel) about 2 months ago. As you stated, the rebates for the 2019 F250 were super. I haven't had a chance to tow my 2020 GD Reflection 297RSTS yet (TT 29' or 33'11" tongue to tail), but am looking forward to it. Covid-19 and my mom's passing put a damper in our plans. So far a really love the F250 Diesel. So much more torque and power. The 3.5 EB was no slouch though... had no problem towing and it certainly pulled the mountains in AR, NM, and AZ (5K miles total trip) without any issues. Going downhill with 10K lbs pushing you was a little unnerving, but the worst part of towing 10K lbs with the 1/2 ton was the wind and trucks. No sway, but I just felt like the little 1/2 ton F150 was getting pushed around way too much. So I'm really looking forward to towing with the 3/4 ton Diesel. Good friends that went from gas to Diesel have indicated it is a night and day difference. So I'm hoping my experience will be the same. As for the "Cool Factor", I felt the 2018 F150 Lariat was pretty cool, especially with the 3.5 EB. With the Twin Turbo's, it would definitely sit you back in the seat when you stepped on the gas. But the "Cool Factor" of the 2019 Ford F250 Platinum Diesel is SO MUCH better!!! So I feel "Way Cooler"!!!. LOL

Excellent presentation, logical and well thought-out. I went through the same mental gymnastics several years ago and decided the 2015 6.2 gasser F-250 short bed SRW in Platinum trim was for me. I drive relatively few miles annually (< 3,000 miles), and tow an equipment trailer with a Kubota tractor (8500 lbs. total weight) perhaps 15% of the time. The 6.2 is more than adequate for all the reasons you allude to, and it has proven reliability. The upcharge for the diesel engine and higher maintenance (and potential higher repair costs) just weren't justified in my particular driving circumstance, but each owner must evaluate their needs and priorities for themselves, as you have done. You have a beautiful truck and should be justifiably proud of it. Happy trails!

The new 7.3L Ford Gas Engine has very diesel like characteristics and you know if you need service it can be taken to any shop without hassle. I’m a diesel fan as I drove trucks for about 12 years after leaving the Military. I’m not a big Cummins fan as I had 2 of them crater at low mileage and at low rpm with no signs that they had any problems. It’s a shame that politics forced Cat to leave the truck engine market as they are the King of diesel power. From what I’ve seen researching all 3 manufacturers, the engines are all designed for 100K service life! WTF? A diesel should be good for 500K at a MINIMUM! That being said, I believe everyone should buy and drive what they like.😎

I’ve been a auto technician in the car business for almost 40 years and gas is the way to go unless you are towing for a living. Gas trucks last way longer and have more power than in the past. If fuel mileage is a concern just think about how much gasoline you can buy for 10k. Depreciation is the same , if you start off lower then you end lower but percentage wise it’s the same. If you need more power then you have a lot of aftermarket choices to supercharger your gas engine and make way more power.

Oil changes at dealer every 7.5k, $89 each change. hard to beat that price so don't do it myself. DEF, DIY. wish i had your fuel cost. in Phx AZ, it has been hovering around $3/gal. The diesel makes sense for me where I tow. Arizona and the west is mountainous. I tow 8000lb payload at elevations from 1230ft (home) to 9200ft (camping in the White Mtns). Its up one mountain 3500ft and down then the next range 4500, then the Mogollon Rim6000ft, then the White mountains 7-10k ft. What happens at altitude, is that an engine cannot make as much torque and horsepower. that additional torque/horsepower makes the difference, doesnt suffer even at 9000 ft. with my payload, I can easily forget i am even towing my 30ft, 7500lb trailer with cargo in the bed. BTW, I have the 50gal Titan Fuel Tank. Weight of the truck makes towing a breeze. If I was a flatlander, gas engine would be sufficient.

The only downside I find to my Diesels is the winter. Addative/anti gel every tank. And I let mine warm up longer. But I love the exhaust brake. I do tow 5-14k 3-4 times a week. If I needed to replace it today I’d lean toward the new 7.3. Both of mine are diesel Dodge Rams a 97 3500 with 310000 and an 18 3500 with 17500.

Great video! I really enjoyed listening to your perspective on these issues. I am pulling a Rockwood 2706WS that sounds like is the same size as your trailer. I tow it with a 2019 4 wheel drive Silverado 1500 that has a 6” lift with 35” tires. I had the truck before the trailer and wasn’t educated about all the weight factors when I bought my trailer. Although it’s within the truck capacity and capabilities it’s not a pleasant time towing this trailer. I’m looking at f-250’s now and struggling with engine choice but after your video I think I’m going to stay with gasoline unless I come across a smoking deal on a new diesel. Thanks for the informative video.

A very well balanced and accurate information video in gas vs. diesel. You likely saw some of my responses on some of your other videos as I have a 2020 Chevy 6.6L gasser. When I hear you paid as low as a gasoline truck as you did with that 6.7L diesel plus all that warranty, what a great deal 👍🏼. As well, as your real world numbers show, it supports why you log your newer 7.3 Godzilla and why I love my Chevy 6.6L gas unit. Take care from Alberta.

Two things: you get some of that money back on the back end sale of your diesel. I hear short trips around town that don't allow the diesel to fully warm up can cause damage and emissions issues.

I have been pulling heavy stock and horse trailers since the '70s! I learned three things favoring diesels! One, they get better fuel mileage! Two, a lot of towing usually requires valve jobs on gas engines because of the increased combustion chamber temperatures! Under load, the combustion chamber temps on a diesel are much lower! Three, properly maintained diesels are good for multiple hundreds of thousand miles without overhaul. These are the reasons over road big rigs are ALL diesel! If one seldom tows gas is probably the best way to go. But if towing any weight at all is the norm, diesels are best! My current diesel has over 285,000 reliable miles on it, well over half of that has been pulling from 3 to 6 tons all over the nation! My last gas powered truck needed a valve job at 38,000 miles!.

2022 would like to have a word... ;) For towing our trailer, we needed to upgrade our 2016 F150 to a F350 in Spring 2022. Every Ford dealer wanted $15,000 over MSRP and you had to take whatever the dealer got in, no negotiations, no choosing your options or add-ons. Some dealers had nothing at all to sell for F250-F450, except for customer orders arriving 8-12mos after ordering, and if the customer didn't want it then that's what they could sell. Ford stopped taking orders months ago, and dealers told me they are hoping ordering opens back up in August 2022. Dealer and others online said the same long game happened in 2021. "Rebates" are non-existent ever since chip shortages got worse in the past 3-4 years, and then covid + lockdowns hit supply chains for the past 2yrs. You are lucky to have bought before these crazy truck buying times hit.

In my business I purchased two F-250 6 L diesels and had no problems running up and down the interstate working in the oil fields. Did not pull a lot of weight and they had a ton of power. What I did not like about the new model was the fact that I could not buy the oil and fuel filters from any local auto parts store and that made the oil changes expensive ($100 in 2004). When I bought the second one you could buy the filters and change your own oil of which I like to do.

He is spot on with the needs vs wants statement. With a difference of roughly $9,000 dollars in purchase cost you can set that aside and have a rebuilt, or new engine, dropped in later if you need it. Granted the diesel should go much farther before a rebuild is needed but I have seen gasers go 300,000 miles before they died. I remember my 1979 Pontiac "Smoke and the Bandit" Edition Trans Am making 220 HP from a 6.6 liter TA Pontiac engine and when I bought it in '83 that was amazing.

Yeah, until you count in the initial cost + the maintenance. I'm a 7.3 Powerstroke fan, but when I upgrade, it'll be to a 6.2 or an older V10 with a stick. Yeah, the fuel costs suck, but the maintenance more than makes up for it. Plus, I don't, and don't suggest, daily driving a truck. Buy a beater for $2-3k and get 35+ mpg with super cheap maintenance.

The previous owner got like 11.5 and idled it all day long (like 1500 idle hours on a truck with 90k miles!). I agree with you on the towing mpg though lol. It's like 8-9 mpg all the time. My dad has the 2015 f250 with the diesel. Same truck configuration. He get's like 17-18 mpg. But the 6.7 has so much more power but it looks like a pain to work on anything under the hood when you have the 2 trucks side by side. You can see the ground looking at the engine in the 6.2! Good video though I liked the comparison.

Did you consider the F350 instead of the F250 since the price difference is extremely small considering the big difference between them on how much weight you can put in the bed of the truck or hitch weight. The F250 compared to the F350 is huge if you were to decide to go to a 5th wheel.

We looked hard at the Ford in 2018 when we bought and loved some of the features, but decided the Ram fit our desires and needs better. It is a personal choice. You hit it right on with your comparisons. One thing which I will add is life expectancy and resale of diesel over gas. I wouldn’t make a choice solely on this but it is one more factor. Keep making honest videos. PS I also have bought and run class 8 trucks and have always been a diesel fan even before the diesel pickups came along.

I hear you there. I have a titan 55 gallon mid-ship tank, and a 100 gallon aux tank in the bed. It's quite excellent to have 1400 mile range while pulling a fully loaded 43' toy hauler and tipping the scales at 28K GCWR. Unloaded it has a range of just a touch over 2200 miles. Can't do that with my gasser. It isn't about driving that entire distance with no stops. We have, but you have a different view of fuel prices and stops when you can drive for >2 days without refueling. You get to fuel up precisely on your schedule and at the station of your choosing, instead of being forced to stop at the sketchy non-name station because the tank is almost dry.

I understand its limitations and am envious of you but I enjoy the daily drivability of the half ton...plus, we tow mostly in FL BUT I can def see an F250 in our future...only because I WANT one). Will it compare to the Cummins , I don't believe so.Travelled through the Rocky mountains last year and this year. Hills were no problem at all. In fact I had to pass a number of vehicles on the way up. And yes the one thing I would miss most of all would be the exhaust brake. I tow 1 month a year for approximately 10,000 kms. (6000 miles) I drive 25000 miles a year. So would the convenience of not having to look for diesel pumps and deal with diesel mechanics, expensive fuel and oil filter changes make it worthwhile. I don't really know. Sure the diesel motor will last a long time if maintained but the rest of the truck will get old and worn just lie any truck. And maintaining an old 3/4 ton truck can be costly if you don't service it yourself.

I’d be concerned with that consistent 12.9 mpg. I run a V10 with 5.35 rear end gears at 28,000 gvw and I get 13 mpg. And I’m waiting for that engine to flipping die, it burns oil, it’s well over 500,000 and I use it at its max gross weight all the time. I’m hard on that thing. Your diesel should be absolutely blowing the doors off my V10 750.

Thanks for the insight. Especially the question at the 30 minute mark. I'm in the market for a new tow vehicle and keep going back and forth between a 3/4 ton and the expedition Max. Based upon your experience with the Expedition sounds like 3/4 it is.

JKoolina no doubt about that one. Thanks for watching and commenting!

We have the 2018 Expedition max and absolutely love it. We are currently at the tetons (which was a 1300 mile trip) and pulled a 7x16 enclosed utility trailer. While it had plenty of power it really needs to have load range E 10 ply tires to take towing to the next level. But not more than I tow I'm not sure I'm willing to make that ride compromise for all the rest of the time. Bottom line is while I love the expedition and it can tow, I would have a much better experience towing with a superduty. My trailer has a extra tall ceiling and for whatever reason seemed to catch a lot of wind. Towing at 75 mph had the mpgs at @ 7.5. 65 mph close to 9. 55 to 60 mph 11 to 12.. Empty I average a combined 19.4 mpg.

Yeah we’re impressed with our 2017 Expedition Limited EL. Better for my wife as her daily driver with 3 kids. But I’ll be getting an F250 6.2 gasser at some point soon.

Or the 2020 7.3 if we can swing it.

So its been a year since you made this video. Any second thoughts on diesel? Have you considered deleting the dpf? I'm looking at a few options now to upgrade my F150 to a 250 or 350 and torn between the 7.3 and the 6.7

You can save money by buying your DEF at truck stops at the pumps vs the containers of DEF, half the price. Plus truck stop def is always gonna b circulating. Stuff at wal mart can sit in inventory for who knows how long. Great content!! 👍

I'll certainly be visiting the truck stop for DEF.

I've bought nothing but Walmart Supertech DEF for 125k miles with no issues. Two jugs every 7500 miles.

I second the exhaust brake being awesome! ESP when towing in the mountains.

Very fair comparison and it matches my experience. HAD a 2016 F-250 with 6.2. It actually towed great in Oregon where basic speed is 55 mph. We could average 8.0 mpg towing our 5th wheel (except in the mountains). Terrible in Idaho with 65 basic speed (even higher mph on freeways). Averaged 6.0 mpg towing. I traded for a 2019 F-350 with the 6.7 Powerstroke and as you say "I got what I expected". Very happy with the upgrade so far, especially with the lack of the stress I feel compared with the 6.2 with the constant shifting of gears while trying to maintain speed on rolling terrain. If I had cruise set, the transmission would shift from 6th gear all the way to 2nd trying to maintain 55 mph. New subscriber!
