I've noticed that all the great guitarist play rhythm and lead equally as well. The big difference I think between them and most of us is that they are able to improvise with the basic concepts whether its lead or rhythm(which includes playing sounds they hear in their head while playing). That's the true skill but it takes practice. Good to see how Kirk approaches it.

To Aadityakiran: BB King does not sing and play at the same time, and he says so. While the singing is the heart of his story-telling blues style, he admits he's not good at both simultaneously, so he does a claasic call-and-response thing.

Nobody mixed the two - rhythm and lead- like Hendrix, though. That Band of Gypsies stuff is unreal. AND he sang!

Very happy to see Kirk Fletcher teaching rhythm guitar. For those unaware, Kirk is for sure one of the best rhythm and lead rhythm guitar players alive right now. Rhythm guitar is so important but underrated and Kirk shows us just how good and fun rhythm guitar can be! Not only that but he is an awesome improviser and all around bluesman. If anyone wants to learn more about his playing, Kirk has a book out that shows some of these ideas and more. THanks for bringing him back, Brett.

Best thing thats helped me improvise is pick two chords and play back and forth with them giving a good backbone structure to where you can either just play the chord, or play a variation of embelishments/hammer ons & pull offs of said chords, then you can play blues licks in between as long as you still land the bass line notes on time, like with little wing he lays down the foundation with a bass note pattern then adds more variety to and finesse to each one to where he can even stray from the chord and throw licks that correspond to that chord of course, but you dont have to be stuck holding the shape you can easily go down a whole octave for BB king effect real quick then still land your next chord change on time. I can post a for short for dummies example of this if anyone is interested, theres 2 chords shapes i find make it so much easier starting out compared to some chords shapes and the resolution the change makes between them. I far from understand it all im still figuring it out but maybe can help someone trying to get started

I think the best players don't distinguish much between the old time labels of lead and rhythm. Who was playing "rhythm" when Hendrix or Jimmy Page was "playing lead?" It's just about playing full sounding music, making the chords or individual notes sound big and engaging...filling the musical landscape with enough to hold the listener's grateful attention.

It only took me a few seconds to love the sound here. Two guitars played by two good musicians sounds like there's nothing missing. There's melody, harmony, rhythm, and groove all stated fully. You could add bass, drums, and vocals, but that's all just icing on a cake that's already tasty.

I just love how a real pro guitarist breakes the rules and you might not notice unless you're counting, in which case you ain't listening, if you listening and counting you'll get confused because the timming is based on feel rather than counting. Rather learn to play play by the feel of the piece , which does not mean that you don't count but you learn to count loosely rather than strictrly metronome style. This type of counting is as big an art as counting strictly with a metronome. Counting ''loosely'' does not mean you don't keep count but keep time by feel rather than by count. This is likley the harderst tihng to learn.

Thanks. This just made me realize I already know this stuff and that the way I play is ok. Chords, and their inversions, extensions and abbreviations is very cool.
