Hey Austin! Thank you for adressing my question, man, it means a lot. I was motivated to ask the question not only because I'm struggling to get past this initial phase after the first textbook, but because in a recent live, you said something like: "One day, I simply started to listen and the tones were there, just like magic". Indeed it is. When I was learning English it was kinda the same. First the work comes, then strangely things just start to make sense and the effort to comprehend them just goes down progressively. But regarding tonal languages, I thought that maybe the story would be different. That's an important teaching from you. You answered my question when you told about the chunks, pairs, and functional parts that usually come together. Some people in internet say, "listen only to what you already know", or "I studied with rapidfire spoken dialogues, or comic sketches". All that seemed meaningless to me, and sometimes even deceiving, because, if I'm only listening to what I already know, my brain will be heavily biased towards the meaning I remember, not with the process itself. Thank you man! Once again, great content. I'm going for it. And I'll check out this awesome product as well. Hopefully, I will come back one day and report my progress.

I learned Chinese from the basic elements and up. The idea of first memorizing the sound of whole sentences, and later learning their elements, seems super hard to me.

agreed! My listening teacher in Lanzhou wanted me to do it that way, and I found it unnecessary and really difficult. I totally forgot about that until now hahaha

Hello , Austin I would to ask you I have a PhD in social science can I get job to teach at university in china ? I am not from native English countries but I speak English fluently
@austinguidry23 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, you only need a bachelor's and a EFL qualification of some kind to teach at a uni if you're teaching English. However, as you're not from a native English-speaking country, that will make it harder to find a uni job because they'll have to find a workaround for you (teachers are supposed to be native speakers). If you're teaching a non-ESL subject, that'd be no problem, because you're teaching math/history/science/etc, not English. Just get on the jobs sites and see what's on offer!

But don't you think that an image says more than a thousand words? I think students need to listen first and then watch. If they only watch they're not using their imagination. When you read or just listen you are. And subtitles only let you see a tiny bit of a text. You cannot read the previous or following sentence unless you rewind or ffw and that's tyring. Nothing beats paper.

Fair enough, fair enough! This was a method that worked for me, but everyone's different, sure! They do have transcripts that you can download and read before / during / after the movie, so that'll help, if you want to read what happened before
