Movies are often given German titles that are different from the original English ones! Looking at some of the more interesting names with Trixi from Don't Trust The Rabbit.

+Honigprinzessin: Such stupid changes often have something to do with trademarks and copyrights, so I guess the name "Dark World" was already registered for something and Disney/Marvel didn't want to pay or make complex contracts to use the original title in the specific region. It's the same with this years "Zootopia" btw., which in Germany is called much less fittingly "Zoomania".

I don't understand why Germans make a new English title when the original title is already English. For example: English = Mean Girls German = Girls Club The English title is as easy as the German title, so why???

Cause often the original English title has words in it that a lot of Germans don't know or can't relate to...for example: trainwreck! A lot of Germans would not know what that means, but everybody knows the what dating queen means. :)

In my opinion "Margos Spuren" is a good title in German, because there is no decent translation for "Papertowns" and John Green once had the plan to name the book "Margos Traces", which is why I don't have a problem with this German title.

My personal highlight is "The good, the bad and the ugly" witch is named in German "ZWEI gloreiche Halunken" (two glorious scoundrels) WTF?, why TWO? There are three main characters in this western classic.

I can only assume the German title only refers to Clint Eastwood's and Eli Wallach's characters and the schemes they play on legal authorities, where one is turning the other in to collect the reward and subsequently helping him escape. The misleading part is that the German title completely misses the dark tone of the movie, in which said schemes are only a minor side plot. It would have been fitting for a more light-hearted prequel that focuses on the backstory of these two characters, but not for what's actually going on in the movie. "Zwei glorreiche Halunken" sounds more like a Bud Spencer/Terence Hill comedy than the dark western epic that it actually is.

To be fair, that is a much better characterisation of the movie than the original title. ;-) But the German title was even worse: "Bis(s) zum Abendrot" (including the paranthesis) is a wannabe play on the words "Bis" (until) and "Biss" (bite). So it can either be translated as "Until Dusk" or "Bitten at dusk", both of which are plain stupid.

It's worth mentioning that Disney didn't repeat the outright moronic naming scheme of the second film but used it as transition to the "Pirates of the Caribbean - [actual translation of subtitle]" names of parts three and four. And as much as I despise what Michael "'Murica" Bay has done to the Transformers, at least I get sort of a chuckle out of not its infantile humor but the German - and Japanese - market manglings of the titles that are at least as bad and/or inconsistent as PotC's: EN - DE - JA Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - Transformers: Die Rache (The Revenge) - Transformers: Revenge Transformers: Dark of the Moon - Transformers *3*: Die Dunkle Seite des Mondes (The Dark Side of the Moon) - Transformers: Darkside Moon Transformers: Age of Extinction - Transformers: Ära des Untergangs (Era of the Downfall) - Transformers: Lost Age And since I'm at it, the Japanese names for the PotC films so far: Pirates of Caribbean: Norowareta Kaizoku-tachi (Cursed Pirates) Pirates of Caribbean: Deadman's Chest Pirates of Caribbean: World End Pirates of Caribbean: Inochi no Izumi (Fountain of Life) [Note the minor differences for the sake of - supposedly - easier pronunciation that also uniquely gave use "Donald McDonald" in Japan. Seriously, the English is mangled into an approximation of perfectly common Japanese syllables through katakana anyway, so in reality they're just lazy.]

I don't see why that would be a bad translation. The message of the title is to have a painful death isn't it? Both titles convey that message. There is no wording like "Stirb hart" or "Stirb Schwer" in German, well at least it doesn't fit well.

WayneAnonymous  I see where you are coming from but I disagree. When you hear "Die Hard" it is instantly conveyed that the movie is about action, explosions and all the good stuff. And if you were to get killed it better be guns blazing. If you put "Die slowly" into your title it could as well be an Arthouse film about some fatal illness that slowly devours grandpa who still has to cough up some old family secret that leads the key of reuniting the split family. I I thought about why that is some more and I think the differing translation is not the biggest problem. "Die slowly" discourages dying in a movie genre that is all about cool deaths. Let's put it simply, there is no way to translate it, so you keep the title. That is the best option. It worked for Dirty Dancing and it surely would have worked for Die Hard.

Oxycominum Well point is, things work differently in German and English. I think "Stirb langsam" has quite a different tune than "Die slowly". It's language specific connotation. It depends on what kind of message you want to send: a) it's an action movie, b) a painful death. I think it would be harder to market Die hard in Germany than Stirb langsam.

(whether they don't know it or just know the literal translation missing out the metaphorical translation). It also is closer to German. but still I agree with you Germans shouldn't do that. A title is really important. it's the one that is your first impression and if that impression is boring.....why would someone look up a trailer though?

In this case I think it could be related to the length of the literal german translation, which would be something along the line of "Die Vorteile, ein Mauerblümchen zu sein" or something similar? I don't even know how exactly I would translate that so that it sounds like a somewhat natural german sentence. Further, a lot of german speak only basic english, so I don't think the original title is easily understandable for many germans.

I think most changed-but-English titles for movie releases in Germany are either due to trademark disputes (e.g. Zootropolis/Zoomania), or because English sounds cool, but the title contains words the average German won't understand. There are a bunch of basic English words (boy, girl, man, woman, world, good, bad, queen, king, club ...) that even Germans who don't speak English can be expected to know. So e.g. "Mean Girls" fails because "mean" is a word fewer people would understand.

I never watched any of the movies, but what I never got, why the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies had the German title "Fluch der Karibik", "Fluch der Karibik 2" and "Fluch der Karibik 3" while they switched for the fourth part into "Pirates of the Caribbean - Fremde Gezeiten". no this os not correct. The titel of the first movie indeed is "Fluch der Karibik" but the second on is calling "Pirates of the Caribbean - Fluch der Karibik 2" and the titel of the third movie is "Pirates of the Caribbean 3 - Am Ende der Welt". But a lot of people say just Fluch der Karibik 1, 2 and 3.

+Wanted Adventure A friend of mine names (don't know the exact words, sorry) fluffy pet animals "Kuscheltiere" (fluffy animals) because they are "kuschelig" (fluffy). I think the problem is the literary translation. For example my grandpa had some rabbits. My buddy went to the cages and said: "Das sind ja ein paar niedliche Kuscheltiere." (These are some cute fluffy animals) I have to say we were kids back then, but as I read the book title it made perfect sense to me (I never saw the movie, but read the book multiple times)

I think the problem is the literary translation. For example my grandpa had some rabbits. My buddy went to the cages and said: "Das sind ja ein paar niedliche Kuscheltiere." (These are some cute fluffy animals) I have to say we were kids back then, but as I read the book title it made perfect sense to me (I never saw the movie, but read the book multiple times)

im deutschen gibt es den Begriff der "Paper Towns" nicht. Während also im englischen der Filmtitel sich auf die eine Szene bezieht in der Margo davon redet, dass die Stadt für sie unecht ist und darsuf dass sie am Schluss selbst in dieser eigentlich nicht existierenden Stadt lebt, kommt der deutsche Titel davon, dass sie ja versuchen Margo durch ihre hinterlassenen Spuren zu finden. :)

That Disney Animation trend is a very recent one, though. The only earlier example I can think of is "Arielle, die Meerjungfrau" for "The Little Mermaid". There might have been one or two more with added subtitles, but almost all other Disney films (other than IIRC only "The Lady and the Tramp" and "The Sword in the Stone" - as "Susi & Strolch" and "Die Hexe und der Zauberer", respectively) simply either got (near-)exact translations where applicable or outright kept the title if it was only the (non-fairy-tale-princess) protagonist's name etc.

Maybe iam wrong but isn't Kuscheltiere an old slang for pets? Cause there were only "Nutztiere" and "Haustiere" where pretty much the same. So a pet wich doesnt has a real purpurse only to " kuschel" with them was a "Kuscheltier". At least thats my theory^^

Nutztiere and haustiere arent the same Nutztiere means animals like cows, pigs, chicken....etc ( animals we eat or get other food from ( eggs, milk) Haustiere means animals we kept at home ( dog, cat, etc.. ) which is similar to pets ☺️

Modern pets are "Heimtiere" but as we now, language is a living thing, so meanings change over the centuries but their orign remains the same. Well I say "Zoomania" in an english way...never heard somebody saying it with "oh" And yes, "Die Vorzüge ein Mauerblümchen zu sein" sounds a little old-fashioned, but I think it would be better than "Vielleicht lieber morgen" because it's (in my opinion) a very important part in the book when they say "You're a wallflower". "Das also ist mein Leben" is okay because of "So, this is my life. And I want you to know...". But I don't understand how they get the idea of "Vielleicht lieber morgen" :D

Yeah. The Parent Trap was a remake of an older American movie that adapted a German book. And Americans remake so much stuff other people did, you won't believe it. They remade Das Experiment and completely missed the point of the movie. They made a bunch of very normal, everyday nobodies into very distinct stereotypes, which defeated the premise of the movie. It was to see how authority, power and class would divide a very homogenous group into a fascist terror society. But if you start with an internally divided group of people with very distinct identities, this defeats the message before the movie even starts. Also The Departed is a remake of a Hong Kong classic called Infernal Affairs. I am surprised nobody tried to remake Metropolis or Lola Rennt yet.

I usually really don't like german movie titles - most of the time someone tries to add some really unfunny german subtitle to the original title or something like that, but sometimes it can make sense to change it. Like with "Pet Sematary". I love the german title, because the german word for "stuffed animals" , "Kuscheltiere" means actually something like "cuddly animals" or "animals for cuddling". So, the word cemetory, something rather creepy and dark, gets put together with something so innocent and cute. And everyone immediately knows that it's a horror story, just by reading the author's name, so, yeah, it's a fun kind of irony, I think. :D

"Pet Semetary" ist about an family moving to a place where children have an cemetary where they can burry their dead pets (in fact, this is a peaceful place, the bad cemetary is another); bu you can say "Kuscheltier" also for an living animal, the "cemetary of stuffed animals" would be the "Friedhof der Stofftiere" ... an "Dodgeball" is the game they play in the movie where the actors often get the ball into the balls"; "Auf die Nüsse gehen" is an german term for something anoying ... and other, "great titles": "Nick of Time", in German "Gegen die Zeit"; "Life with Mikey", in German "Hilfe, jeder ist der größte"; "National Treasure", in German "Das Vermächtnis der Tempelritter" and "Airplane", in German "Die undglaubliche Reise in einem verrückten Flugzeug" (THe unbelievable voyage in a crazy airplane")

In Sweden we don't usually translate titles (unless the movies are aimed at children), but the one instance that I remember from recent years where a not-for-kids movie got its title changed is "Captain America: Winter Soldier". Somehow, it became "Captain America: The Return of the First Avenger". I don't know why. The American title is short and to the point, while the Swedish is really long and ... well, of course "The First Avenger" returns in the sequel to his own movie. I don't know what that was about.
