I toured my local sewage treatment plant on Long Island, NY a few years back. It was very interesting aside from the smells of course. I learned there was a successful experiment to create a tertiary filtration that would allow the water to be sent right back into homes in sinks instead of being pumped three miles out into the Atlantic to alleviate the burden on the local aquifers. Alas, the consensus was that though it was perfectly clean and filtered water, the idea of sending cleaned urine back to the citizens directly wouldn't sit well with the populace and was scrapped. I've also had the experience of going all the way down to see the flow of raw sewage. My god, that smell.. Thank you for another amazing episode! I enjoyed the dynamic between you and Joseph and I especially liked the classroom bits with the micro-kaiju!!
@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN
@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN 8 жыл бұрын
What an experience! Yes, the smell ... but I was surprised it wasn't worse actually. Yeah, it's weird to think of sending this stuff back to the people but everything we eat and drink is really sent back in one way or another. I try not to think about it but this episode didn't help that. Haha! -John

This would probably be a civil engineer's dream to see how a sewage works from the inside from a first person prospective. I think they also have something similar in America but you don't really get to tour the inside of the sewages though. But this is quite amazing to watch really. Not just for civil engineers but for anyone who wants to know how everything works.

@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN
@WaoryuONLYinJAPAN 8 жыл бұрын
System meaning high tech, total monitoring of sewage "system" not just pipes. Japan had sewage disposal (Edo period) way before Europe where buckets of crap where just thrown out the window to the street as late as the 1890's! New York's sewage drains didn't really start until the 1910's and are now pretty ancient, not able to handle a lot that's flushed. Japan has total computerization and monitoring of its sewage and that's pretty advanced. As we saw in Brazil, there are still loads of places in the world that don't even know what's in the sewage and where it goes. I learned a lot about sewage, info I crammed in my brain that made me forget something else that was probably important! Lol I probably should have been clearer in the video but this info would have probably been boring. Is Tokyo's sewage the best in the world? Yes for the world's biggest and oldest cities. -John
