This brings things home to me. I have a large koi pond of around 120,000 ltrs Evaporation and the need for fresh water means I add around 5% a day, so some so about 5400 ltrs a day. One thing I notice is that the farmer who gets the water sprinkles her water, this allows for a lot of evaporation, she would be better drip feeding I think, and what does her husband do.

We are seriously mismanaging our resources. The point, however, isn't the sum total of water on the planet, but how much is usable by humans for drinking, irrigation, hygiene, etc. Water contamination by industry has drastically reduced the volume of clean, potable water available and global heating is causing more droughts, of longer duration, causing flooding that further contaminates water sources, melting glaciers that humans rely on for water, etc.

Having to face water shortage practically all years round, shouldn't nations act like China to harness water from regions of plentiful water to the the drier areas; instead of spending so much on defense budgets? India could have done better using similar man-made canal to distribute water across the country. In smaller area like Java Island, the government could create larger artificial reservoirs by enlarging existing ones so that the rain water could be saved for later use. After all heavy rains occur rather often in the tropical areas. There should be a change among the Asian nations so that expenditures on defense of every nation could be reduced towards creating infrastructure that promote economic progress. To reduce defense expenditures of each nation, there should be some kind of platform where the concern of all nations could be openly discussed and resolved!

heres why jakarta situation is very silly: 1. they build houses in silly area such as swamps and stone area like in your video. those stone area can barely get any water, while those who live in swamp area get flood every year. 2. they get flood yearly in many areas not just those in swamp areas, and yet other areas still experience drought. it's a proof of poor water management system. like why dont they just save or transport those flood water somewhere else with extreme drought. 3. and finally, they blame the heck out of climate change. their "sea water level rise" is mainly caused of their insane extraction of ground water (the ground lowers, not the sea level rising). they just need to implement a good system here not just blaming climate change left and right, but yes obviously nobody in charge and/or government is willing to implement a proper watering system.

For the past 30 years, global warming, had melted over 40% of glaciers in Tibet. In the next 25 years, there may be little glaciers left to provide rivers and stream with fresh water. Instead of polluting water with sewage, chemicals, fertilizers and dead bodies, people in downstream countries should (1) educate public on water conservation, (2) stop polluting water, (3) develop water management for sustainable usage. Yangtze River has just started the 10 year moratorium on fishing. Likewise, Mekong should introduce moratorium on fishing ban. The government must compensate fishermen for the moratorium.

guys, it is ALREADY HAPPENING half of the Brazilian - São Paulo state dams/water reservoir are below 40%. The pantanal region is on fire. The Amazon is on fire. The rivers are dry. In the arctic regions also there is enormous fires. The USA california along neighbor states are on fire. If even half the people in these water stressed areas would make an effort to catch rainwater when it is available it would ease the stress on the ground water supplies and give it a chance to recharge. The man growing the shrimp and fish in Singapore could decrease his use of public water supplies even further if he caught all the rain water coming of his buildings.

I watched a video where they used an approximately 2800 sq. ft. rain roof they collected over 15,000 gallons of water from 2 3/4" of rain. Now imagine 50% of the buildings in Singapore captures just 5,000 gallons of water per storm in a cistern and uses that water to flush toilets, for cleaning, or bathing, or industrial use like the fish and shrimp farm. This water is very clean with zero treatment and can, if stored correctly, be used as drinking water as well with little or no treatment. (many people use only filtration)

Its finding ways to contain that water is the problem. Countries aren't building enough reservoirs to contain that water during rainy seasons. Deforestation is also a factor as trees can help form clouds through transpiration.

It seems to me that those who are concerned about climate change and its lack of rain should be looking at how the rain forests are being destroyed. From what I've learned they produce the entire weather systems that make rain. It's what I learned in school a long time ago and I know that the rain forests are disappearing at alarming rates. Desalination plants in Singapore will ramp up production to meet the shortfall. Main shortfall is the process is expensive even though desalination is using reverse osmosis.

I think you are either too lazy to find out the info, or illiterate and cannot read news. FYI, we got 4 taps in Singapore. 1st tap which is the NEWater that recycle water provides up to 40% of Singapore’s water supply. 2nd tap is the desalination plants which converts sea to drinkable water and we just complete 4th plant this Sept, we have 5th plant completing this year too which when all 5 plants complete can provide >50% of water supply for current needs. The 3rd tap is reservoir which provides 10% of our needs and lastly the malaysia tap. We still need to play nice to Malaysia simply because we have to lower the cost of desalination as it’s still costlier than importing water from Johor. I like to also remind you that the reason our government is trying their best to do all these many years ago is because we understand Malaysia’s Tunku once said that any unhappiness with Singapore they can always turn our water tap off. We never wanted to be at any country’s mercy so we have to be self sufficient at all cost even before our water agreement is up. Actually we need to thank Malaysia for this water issue. If not for their threats we will probably never be more ready.

Because of population explosion we are putting pressure on limited water resources. Durian like avocado require lot of water I guess we discourage farmers to venture on this fruit trees.

Oh you don’t know we have 5 water recycle plants and another 4 desalination plant completed plus another desalination scheduled for completion this year? We have 100% self sufficiency by the time our 5th desalination plant is completed end of this year. But we still need to play nice cos desalination plant is more expensive than importing water from Johor. So ya we are going to die of water price increases if Johor turn tap off... so scary!! 🥺

Julius Vinh you mean if it kills the fishes, if it did Malaysia and Indonesia will be the first to complain already. If you think Singapore government don’t understand or don’t care like other countries, we check the water for saltiness periodically after releasing the brine to the sea to Ensure there’s no damage to surrounding waters. We always check and test if things are sustainable before deciding that desalination is workable here. If not we are just killing ourself in another way.

In my country and other European countries we already had desalination stations as some of us already had long periods of drought before climate change was here. It is the same as our usual routines when we do not have enough water. We desalinate it, clean it up and send it off into the water piping underground system. Also we tend to distribute limited water on time shifts based on cities and areas to conserve our water even more. We also tend to do campaigns about how water can be conserved in our households, in farming, in harvesting etc. The main issue I have noticed with some of Asia’s biggest cities is that there has been an influx of people the last couple of years. This has caused a lack of proper housing and water piping etc. This is further accentuated with the “global warming” and the political corruption everywhere. Also the change of fruit trees and crops in order to make more exotic fruits to get more money causes watering issues and harvesting issues as well. Not every fruit can be sustained or planted everywhere.
