Yes and no. The 2+4 treaty from the german reunification restricts our military to under 600 thousend aktiv military personal and no nuclear weapons. The last one is not really a restriction for us because we (the germans) are also part of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Also one could argue that we do not even get close to the restrictions. Our current military has a manpower of 183,460 (September 2020). The federal government will increase this to probably around 200,000 men sometime between 2025-2029. So you can't generally say that these restrictions are currently relevant to us in any way. As far as the budget is concerned, we are not restricted either, but we try to keep it as low as possible for understandable reasons. Should we ever have a military again with a manpower of almost 600,000, the Bundeswehr would be by far the largest military in Europe and the second largest in the western world. I think you understand that for a country like Germany that is surrounded by friendly states, without any real threats, that would be absolutely exaggerated. Quite apart from the costs, which would be very high, even for a country as rich as Germany. Of course no one is interested in that, except maybe some nationalists or as we call them neo-Nazis.

Oh and we don't realy buy into the idea of aircraft carriers. First of all our military doctrine is defensivly, so why should we have a weapons system like that. Secondly, aircraft carriers and their battlegroups are easy to spott and therefore easy to destroy, at least with weapons from the 20 and 21 century. One single tactical (nuclear) missile that can be fired from hundreds of kilometers away is sufficient to eliminate this group. The same applies to torpedoes and co. A single German submarine of the latest 212 class could destroy an entire group during an exercise without being noticed at all (simulated) . The Norwegians have also managed to do the same with the same boat class. And one thing is certain, if we can do that, Russia and China, possibly even North Korea, can too. Stealth is the keyword in naval warfare these days and an aircraft carrier cannot be hidden, it will always be heard and seen (even from space).

Yes of course the military is a cash vampire from which there is no tangible benefit so of course and country will want to spend that on increasing the living conditions, very understandable. I imagine Germany is more concerned about a land based conflict than a marine one which I imagine accounts for what I would have thought was a relatively small amount of ships?

​@@alannewman85 That is correct. The German Navy has the task of securing the Skagerrak Strait off the coast of Denmark in the event of a possible conflict. In addition to that, the task of intercepting and destroying possible atomic submarines north of Norway and in the polar sea with our hunting submarines. Both naturally take place within the framework of NATO. You don't need a large navy for either. Germany has, however, comparatively large tasks in nato in Europe when it comes to land conflicts. Therefore, Germany has the largest land forces in Europe (except Russia). Precisely, comparatively most ground troops, most tanks, most howitzers, most armored personnel carriers and so on.

i forgot to mention that the task of the german navy are in "peace times" different. Meaning anti pirate missions, assisting carrier strike groups, deploying special forces and so on.

About the accent it really depends where in Germany someone comes from. The German accents and dialects have a big variation from North to South and East to West. Hence you will hear a difference when those guys speak English as well. Bavarians speaking English sound alike Austrians, Northern Germans slightly more like Dutch.
