So the thing about the Mk14's was that they would run too deep and the firing pin would bend on a 90 degree hit. So interestingly enough you could set up torpedo hits for 45-30 degree hits for higher success rates. Problem was the Bureau of Ordinance would court martial the shit out of anyone they caught not following their specifications. The navy had to keep going by the books to (eventually) prove there was a problem with the torps. xD

@@jamesparriott5852 yup, they'd get run through the courts if they did. But that might have also made the situation worse as BuOrd seemed to assume that their torpedoes worked fine, but some crews "break" them by tampering with their super secret technology that everyone knew about.

They looked on themselves as the ones fighting the war, when in actual fact it was the poor buggers risking their necks in the firing line who were the ones fighting the war, and far too many didn't live long enough to see the fruits of their valour on the 11th August 1945. There is currently no real cost for lost land based aircraft except the cooldown right? I think it would add some challenge to the game if any lost aircraft would need resources to be replaced at that base. Then enemy aircraft kills would be more valuable as well.

Try changing the bomb loadout for the aircraft depending on what ship are there,Semi armour piercing (SAP) bombs are best against light cruiser, destroyer and maybe heavy cruiser and Armour piercing (AP) bomb are best for and battleships. And its seem there are splash damage for near miss bombs.

Two Takao class cruisers gone...my favorite heavy cruiser class ever. They took a lot of hits before succumbing. It is sheer madness to send a surface battle group on a long mission against an airbase and NOT even bombard it when you get there! A good way to lose valuable ships for just a handful of airplanes. I hope the game designers take note and correct the problem.

This game is a great way to familiarize oneself with the appearance of all the ship classes used by the Japanese and Americans! The destroyers are the ones I have a hard time sorting out, since there are so many different types. It would be kind of cool if the Japanese got to use some of their other BB's such as the Nagato, Ise, or Fuso classes...but they weren't considered to be high speed enough for operations in the Solomon Islands. Nor were the older American battleships, for that matter (but most of them were out of action for some considerable after Pearl Harbor anyway).

Bomb hits should suppress the light AA ships are shooting off. I also find it hard to believe none of Musashi's 6-in turrets weren't knocked out in any of those attacks. The AI really needs some improvement to not send ships out without fighter cover unless it is night time or something.

I must say it's really disappointing to see the AI unable to attack the port, probably a bug... Maybe you should restrict your usage of ports which should have been damaged ? Otherwise the poor AI just give you perfect targets without any risk...

I understand what you mean by restricting the port. The thing is I barely use this port at all. Also I believe the lower level airfield just has no B-17s which I have already stopped using in an offensive capacity.

It might be that first air attack caused damage that reduced the group speed and was heavy enough to cause the AI to abort the mission? Actual Japanese commanders made similar decisions mid-war, balancing the desire to inflict decisive damage with the need to avoid losing irreplaceable ships, and turning their ships around at the edge of victory.

You are probably using the wrong bombload (SAP - semi AP) on your dive bombers instead of AP for going after heavy cruisers and BBs.

The only reasonable explanation for the AI failing to bombard is the damage being applied to the enemy fleet is enough to trigger the HOME mission. This will be improved in TTE 3.0 More features that are going to be implemented to make the AI better in game: Light carriers and japanese sea plane tenders escorting large convoys:Hosho, Taiyo, Akitsu Maru , Chitose and Nisshin. All of them with 3D models. For the american side the Bogue class is going be used. Fleet carriers escorting large fleet invasions. No more BBs without air support.

If you had split your air to port and starboard attacks one low one dive if you throw in 17s then you have a triple threat. You've been blessed the Port Moresby attack fleets didn't have carrier air support or float zeros. Great work overall. Former USN/USNR, history buff Civil War - DS/DS.

Historically the American torpedoes had a lower dud rate when they hit ships at an angle, not sure if this is modeled in game but it makes for good head canon.

@@MrMorvana the mk 14 torpedo as well as the air dropped version were indeed terrible, and not for any one reason. The magnetic detonators were developed for the Atlantic, so they didn’t go off. The depth keeping systems were defective, so they frequently went far too deep. The impact detonator was designed for a much slower weapon and so tended to get destroyed on impact without detonating the weapon. This last point is why the torpedoes worked better against ships traveling at an angle, this made the weapon more likely to detonate, but still not really reliable. Magnetic detonators were a problem for everyone, but they could be turned off. The problems would ultimately be fixed by the end of the war and American torpedoes would sink much of the remaining IJN courtesy of American pilots and submariners, the torp would then stay in service until it would be replaced by guided weapons. In 1944 the mk 14 was a deadly tool comparable to British, German, and Italian offerings. In 1941 it was a waste of deck space.

@@Wolfpack345 The three torpedoes you successfully hit Musashi with on the last strike kind of suggests that this angled attack is modelled. The duds you got were all launched more perpendicular to the target. It might be an idea to try the angled attack again and see what happens.

Hey Wolfpack. I discovered that you can skip the bombs in War on the Sea. I didn’t believe it at first but it’s a great tactic to implement. You can use B-17s to basically cover your Avenger Torpedo aircraft. You’ll lose more B-17s due to the challenge but your avengers will be able to drop fishes without taking as much damage

4:06 I believe this is the misclick, 30 seconds ago just said "will focus on heavy crusiers" which should be the second vessel in the column, then directed two flights on the first vessel which is Musashi :) I was really puzzled when seeing the video for the first time

Something I have learned, requires a LOT of patience. If enemy ship is burning and at moderate damage or more...wait. It may require 30 - 45 minutes ( real time ) but occasionally the fires will spread and cause secondary explosions.. and ship will sink. Sank Yamato showing moderate damage and minor flooding....waited over 45 minutes ( real time, or several hours ( game time ). But Yamato finally sank.

it seems they replicated the reliability issues with early war US torpedoes, I think it was the extreme anlges that saved him many times as the torpedoes tended to go off much more reliably when impact angle was around 45 degrees or less due to steeper angles being found to damage the the detonator

Another problem. When the AI controls subs, you can guess that it's a sub right away and take evasive action before you've even detected it...which usually results in no torpedo hits on your ships...then you hunt down the sub and kill it. So the AI subs become useless and doomed to be sunk. But when the player is managing subs, they usually achieve surprise and score hits and sink ships! Again, the AI simply can't deal with a player who knows the game mechanics well. This is more "fun" than losing a game....but the lack of real challenge kind of defeats the purpose of the game, I think. Both sides should have a fighting chance. So how to improve the AI is the real question?

My issue with subs is that you can't prevent the attack in the first place. No possible way to detect them on the strategic map when historically they were surfaced most of the time and detected by aircraft. In game, if you choose to not react until the torpedoes are detected that is an okay self-rule. I've actually lost a fuel tanker asap because a sub near-point blanked it with a volley of torpedoes... it was weird because the sub aimed the volley where I ended up evading towards and would have missed if I didn't. But having that attack happen in the first place was absurd, this sub was tracking my fleet for the day and waited until night to attack WHILE traveling at top speed WHILE I had a heavy CAP of aircraft over the convoy. It also deployed a float plane at night to join the attack and landed both bombs on a DD. O_o Playing sub sims makes me jealous of how easy this game's subs can evade detection (strategic map). I'm probably going to disable subs because the constant sub raids are a pain. Which is a shame cause the sub fights arn't bad, just there's no point in prevention measures.

I think you shoud send B-17s after the carrier, its one of the few things they can hit and it would be pretty cool to see, and unlike a battleship, the flat top is not all that fun to fight it in a surfice battle

Wolfy kind of swore off B17s in the 1st episode stating their batting average was too good. I asked him above to re-consider using them lightly loaded against Destroyers and CLs as they are harder to hit.

@@gnarlax2005 im going off raw statistics of the TIME this game takes place in, 1942-43. By that time the US had the older SBBs and the North Dakota and South Dakota class BBs. Armor went to the Yamatos, caliber of guns went to the Yamatos, at this time AAA armament goes to the US and secondaries go to the US. I know that there were the very powerful Iowas in 1944 but not in this game. The Yamato class in this game are the most powerful warships alone, being less powerful than a USN TF but a 1 on 1 against a So Dak or a Nor Cal would be a Yamato victory

Wolfpack, just wanted to suggest next time when you use the Dauntless instead of using the SAP Bomb loadout to switch to the AP Bombs as they would be better at killing Heavy Cruisers and BB's Faster. At least that's been my Experience when I've used them anyway...love the series regardless keep up the good work!

Just a thought, you were at the main base (New Hebredes?) You loaded supplies and troops etc and then you bought 3 more destroyers. You merged the convoys into task force 13, but you never loaded supplies or troops on the new ships before sending them off.

Never designate a Task Force with the number 13. Sailors are a superstitious lot! Few would sail in that one. True story... The famous Task Force 16 built around _Enterprise_ was originally designated TF13, and ordered to sail on Friday the 13th. Halsey balked! He went to CINCPAC, and they changed the number, and the departure date to Saturday the 14th. This event happened in February 1942.

You might just clobber Musashi's rudders or a couple of props - slowing her down. The bombing of the Musashi may have inflicted moderate damage. But nothing too fatal.

Too much hits, way more than in reality. Maybe it's because the AI is almost not trying to evade (when in reality these ships were able to make incredible manoeuvres for things of these sizes to dodge bombs), but must probably because in reality most pilots were more than scared by the wall of DCA, which make them often drop torpedoes a bit early or drop their bomb a bit too high to have a guaranteed hit.

Well I sent 6 battleships 2 heavy cruisers and 2 destroyers into Rabaul and level it from a 5 to a zero with 3 salvos. It takes a lot of heavy guns but it van be done. 1 CA can't reduced a port like 4 CAs or 4CAs like 4 Battleships. Always remember to fire once and check the status of the port/airfield before firing again. Wasting a salvo not only wastes ammo - reduces your defensive capability against another fleet.

Musashi's resilience is a getting a little bit unbelieavable by now, she has eaten more than a half a dozen torpedoes, same with bombs and the flooding/damage is still only moderate? Half of her guns should be out of action by now, and flooding should be much more significant too. Air power is so OP though. WIth no real penalty for aircraft lost and enemy unable to bombard ports it's a turkey shoot, or rather, bomb. Launch Dauntlesses, bomb stuff, wait for cooldown to expire, rinse, repeate. After everything scary enough was sunk by air raids, mop up with surface forces and sink light cruisers/destroyers that are too nimble to bombard. That's it.

Why the use of Semi Armorpiercing (SAP) and not Armorpiercing (AP) bombs? Would think they are more effective against heavily armored targets (Heavy Cruisers and Battleships)?

I think the best way to get the Musashi with duantless' alone is to hammer the BB from port and starboard with AP bombs rather than SAP bombs to tear into the ship

U should be able to rearm ur fleet at guadal, so u have to build t5 Harbour fast at guadal. Then it will be easy to defend there.Next u have to attack the bb first, and sink it its a lot of cp for bbs

Hey Wolfpack so when ships are being repaired, command points are gained? And what are your plants with the Santa Cruz islands?

MO When to place a ship in for repairs you get about 50% of the cost of the ship back in command points. When the ship is repaired you have to buy it again at full price. So the 50% back is a way to pay for the repairs. Sometimes a ship can take 8-12 days to repair so it can be a good deal - pay by the job and NOT by the day..

Scuttling seems really biased against the player, I keep losing expensive ship that have heavy dam and heavy flood and they AI gets away 3 times with crit crit.
