In my interpretation, an other reason for an eldar to be willing to become an avatar would be to sure his soul goes to Kaine rather than Slanesh, as it would ordinarly be the case, even if you let a few thousands years in the infinity circuits passes before this ultimate fate

Even if this just causes you to die painfully and go to Slaanesh (I myself think that Khaine "claiming" Young King's soul is more probable), the Eldar in question would still do this. They are raised in incredibly utilitarian philisophy there on the craftworlds. Trading their life for survival and victory of their kin comes as something they're just supposed to do out of logic and necessity.

Although, if you are an exarch, once you gloriously die in battle, your soul will not go to Slaanesh, but remain in your armor for eternity. Once other one of your aspect wears the armor, your soul will merge with his, forever a priest of Khaine. Love the Eldar lore!

No clue if it's still in the rules but it used to count as just another daemon for any weapon or power that did special things to daemons. Since it's a piece of a warp entity entitled a "god" it's exactly as much daemon as any other.

I agree, however, the reason to why, is sad. Graphics are getting better and better, in theory, however, people applying the graphics, gets less and less resources (like time) to do so, and the effort putted in, is getting lower and lower. Modern videogames look often worse then videogames created 10 years ago, brecause of economic cuts and profit maximization. Before, videogames where Ideological art pieces that made profit, and profit was good enough. Today, they need to make as much profit as possible, that goes to shareholders, and it makes the videogame play bad, and look terrible.

One of the coolest things I find in Warhammer Fantasy is that BOTH the High and Dark Elves worship Khaine. As much as they hate each others' guts, they both call upon Khaine to bless them for battle and orient their combat philosophies around his various aspects. It's a cool element of the lore that really highlights the grimdarkness of the setting (i.e. even the "good guys" worship the same war god as their "bad" counterpart) and serves as a really cool defining element of the Elven race - that all battle is worship. Shame the Dark Eldar find themselves too high and mighty to need to resort to "gods". Would be cool if both sides worshipped Khaine even in the 41st millennium. One metaphorically by seeking ever greater heights of martial prowess (the Witch Elves become the Wych Cults), the other literally by turning into a giant molten statue.

Not just the Black Library releases, they actually had the avatar getting fucked over by a bloodthirster: Bane style, in the actual Eldar codex when I got into Wh40k back in the day. Relic had the back breaking animation in the first Dawn of War, in case a bloodthirster killed an Avatar it would actually lift its battered husk above its head and then break its spine over one knee. It was then patched out for... Balance reasons.

In Epic, the Avatar was a free troop card with a nasty CAF, +10 or 12, and a fixed saving throw of 2+. Should have been a nasty bullet sponge. Nope. In every game I ever used it, and I used it in every eldar force, it was destroyed by the very first shot aimed at it. Didn't matter whether it was a Great Gargant's solid gut bursta' ball or a bolt gun round, I would always role a 1. Every time, without fail. I can only conclude it was a cursed item and the only saving grace is loosing it cost me nothing in VP or troop points.

My favourite avatar feat has to be in the Battlefleet Gothic books where an avatar walks his ass through the webway to a world where a group of dark eldar had allied themselves with the forces of chaos, for their own ends of course and where engaging in battle with eldar and imperial forces. The avatar walks up to the dark eldar lord, takes his mask off and basically glares the guy into self combustion.

Eldar were my first 40k army. I was a big time High Elf player back in fantasy, so there was already some sort of kinship there. But it was over as soon as I saw the guardian models. 10 years ago they looked absolutely amazing compared to the rest of the GW line. Guardians, Dire Avengers, Falcons, War Walkers. Their plastic sets were all absolute classics. Almost makes me want to pick them up again. Literally the only problem with the Eldar is that I'm really terrible at the tabletop. So when I lose like 70% I feel really bad. Like... you're going extinct. You need a better commander than me. When I lose 70% of my IG games I erect monuments to their glory and great sacrifices and raise another regiment. So far I have 3 tabletop terrain pieces commemorating the exceptional actions of my 8th Mechanized Grenadiers. Which I sadly cannot field like I used to. Once upon a time I would field 1 company command, 6 veteran squads, all with carapace armor, special weapons, mounted in chimeras, for 1000pts. Good times. Took them to a doubles tournament once, got paired with a 1000pt Grey Knights player for a few games. Our tactics were "Stand on those objectives guardsmen and we''ll show you how the Grey Knights murder the scary things." That was the most fun I've had playing tabletop. I have a monument of a guardsmen model, painted like bronze, to commemorate those brave men. How 1000pts of guardsmen faced down entire armies by themselves is incredible. If only any of them had survived to tell the tale. But they did their duty to the God-Emperor. They held the line and died standing.

Kind of With the ritual of sacrificing the young king, you are destroying their soul to act as fuel for the avatar. So you have to suppose that: some soul remnants is around, the components can be gathered before extinguishing, and that they have the means to do so. Because the Craftworlds lack the technology to create clones like the Dark Eldar can.

Idk, how much the Dawn of war games can be considered canon, but Damien Thule faced and defeated Khaine like three times, first in Dark Crusade, then as a dreadnaught on DoW2 if you bring him to the mission, and the in Chaos rising if, again bring him with you to the mission.

On the tabletop, I used to take the Avatar a lot, but, once my opponents figured out what you mentioned, namely, the giant statue of molten metal wasn't very fast, they played keep-away, and all those points accomplished nothing. Then GW nerfed it mightily, and lo, one of my best painted models never again took the field...

He might have been made a Lieutenant after coming back to the Ultras. Since that whole Chapter size restriction doesn't seem to be a thing anymore. He might be leading 100+ marines, but is not the head of his Company. The new Demi-legion sizes are rather odd

@@saulschimek7680 According to GW the chapters are still roughly 1000 strong. The companies still have roughly 100 Marines each. The difference is that now every company has 2 Lieutenants under the Captain. Yep, they have dilluted the ranks to a ridiculous point. A Battle Company now has 6 "Battleline Squads" 2 "Close Support Squads" and 2 "Fire Support Squads". All of the above have a bunch of untis that can fit their description. Even the 100 strong Vaguard may be drawn from various companies when needed from what we know.
