You just know there were board room talks about "consumer confusion" and "negative synergy" when the game designers asked if they could include Age of Sigmar army ranges with The Old World. I guarantee that's the reason why you can't do Lizardmen or Skaven, they're in Age of Sigmar, you base the games differently, the new sculpts are designed without concern to fitting into tight units (not that they always seemed that concerned before), they're afraid Timmy will become confused and angered, so it's off the table.

Yeah, with Lizardmen recently being refreshed, and Skaven likely being the antagonist of Age of Sigmar 4th edition, they probably want to avoid a new player or parent walking into a store and buying the wrong models.

I'll be playing my Lizardmen whether mummy and daddy GW say I can. Most of the core rules we've seen are quite good! The thing I'm most worried about is that nobody has tried to abuse the "fighting rank" rule yet. For example it seems to me like skeleton archer units should be deployed 50 wide. Shoot 50 times in your turn, receive a charge and shoot 50 more shots in stand&shoot, and then get up to 50 melee attacks... I doubt it's practical to move around the board 50 wide but for defensive units like that it seems like there's no downside.

Lets hope that GW cracks down on too abusive stratagies. As a recently returned Warhammer player I was quite impressed how they took the broken release of 10th ed 40K and fixed the worst issues with "patches" in a month, and after 3 months almost made it ideal... atleast in a win% sort of way.

I agree, most of them are really good. However when it is released I do wonder how long it will before it is broken by the gameists. I have no problem with that- if its abusable, we need to know how to do it as quickly as possible. I will be trying to break it asap - precisely because I want it to be balanced.

I fully agree with the simpler miniatures thing - I'm not a great painter, but I can get decent results with simple models. The current direction of GW design, cramming ever-more detail onto a miniature, really puts me off from starting new models. I've had some of the new plastic sisters sitting on my desk for more than a year, becuse there's simply so much on them that I'm completely intimidated away from starting. Something like the TK skeletons, or the Fireforge Foot Knights, which are really short on detail but have a very clear design language, are much more my speed and I find myself enjoying these much more.

Yes. I think the best models to 'learn' on are simple space marines or old school chaos warriors. Skeletons are nice too, because with the right sort of technique applied after watching a video (or in the old days being shown) you can get a result that looks really good and that gives confidence.

The loss of the "whimsey" which is alluded to in other posts here is a loss to the fantasy element. As has been said the over decoration of the 🤢🤮 AOS stuff detracts from gaming and painting. This is why the wife prefers 5/6th edition. She likes the "fun" elements of Orcs and Gobbos, as well as the self executing Skaven (you're not a real skaven player unless you lose 25% plus if your forces to your own weaponry!) BTW....wasn't Slambo shown on one of the original Chaos Combat Cards?? I find myself agreeing with so much of what you are saying. You have secured a new sub!

When discussing the new models released by GW nowadays with my friends, I've always lamented the over-complexity of the new minis due to the fact that they sculpt in 3D now rather than with physical tools. I would prefer simpler models, allowing me to add my own details and cool paint job if I'm in the mood for it. As for the unsupported factions, I think it's a purely logistical issue. Supporting 16 factions with new models and rules updates is a nightmare, especially for a brand new game. What I believe is that GW is going to assess how well the game does and then release them in the future with a new edition that we'll eventually see, somewhat like Total War Warhammer.

I believe since Age of Sigmar and The Old World are under GW but still made by separate sister companies that is why they are dividing factions and not supporting them in both. Age of Sigmar already has Ogres, Seraphon, Skaven, Daemons, Dark Elves, and etc so Old world can't use those factions and had to develop new factions and is forced to use old models and not the new UPDATED Age of Sigmar models. Sad but is what it is. Seems to make more sense to just develop Old World rule set and just allow models factions and models to be used in either game and just sell movement trays to slot round bases into.

I wouldn't be too concerned in your position. GW completely ballsed up the release of AoS, no points, free reinforcements, stupid legacy 'joke' rules about moustache twiddling etc but the community that took up the game, which didn't include me as I wanted a rank and file game, managed to turn the game into a playable and competitive game. I love fantasy it was the whole AoS thing left me cold but credit where it's due to players and tournament organisers in taking the mess GW had thrown out and said here is your new game that was mostly an unholy disasterthe community made it what it is today, and GW eventually started to understand enough of what players wanted the game to be to make it work for most players.

I've been collecting Dark Elves exclusively for over 20 years. I've supported GW and the DE line moreso during the years when GW hadn't. The current line is the 7th to 8th line. They got no updates in AoS for that team to territorialy piss on in the first place. It's an absolute travesty.

The hard no on further support for renegade factions and lack of step up is really a sad day for me and my lizardmen. I have gone through getting ready to buy all of the rule books to have and study despite with only a lizardmen army to freezing all gw purchases until course has been corrected. I am still hopeful that gw will correct course about the renegades. I dont need printed books or new models to be happy just legal pdf factions that maybe get a balance check every year or so.

I think they've done this due to the fact that the listed factions here have lost their actual flavor in AOS. The more Tolkien/Historical theme of the Border Princes, Empire, Brettonia and High Elves just sint in AOS its so much more cartoonish/Steam punkish. Lizardmen and Skaven I think have been dield up to a more high-fantasy in AOS and so these armies (my beloved Knights in particular) were left in the bin until now. Interesting to see where they'll take it. I know im my local scene its getting a lot of hype and pre-ordering. My Dogs of War who have served many a contractor across 5 separate rank and flank game systems that are simply eager to meet new and returning players to a truly wonderful setting of the Old World. I've heard Old World and HH being described as the place GW wants to stuff and satisfy their Grognards. As someone who enjoys playing 5th ED 40k and Old World Fantasy both for rules and setting I will honestly accept this.

I was really tempted to buy the Bretonnia box; my first ever GW miniatures were the Bretonnian half of the 5th edition starter box, but the price scared me off. I’ll be holding out hope they release a box for the Empire as that was my primary faction. I will say in regards to your point about more detail being a bad thing, I’m not looking forward to painting an empire soldier with a ton of tiny trinkets and doodads all over him when there’s 49 of his friends I also have to paint. I hope they release the old version of the state troops rather than the newer more detailed ones with chicken feet trinkets and tiny pistols all over them. Thank you for the video! I agree with you that my thoughts early was the same when it comes to the legacy factions. Reading through previous articles I felt it was clear that these were not going to be supported in the interim and they would not be legal in GW tournaments. I think that these factions will be allow in regular tournaments however the downside is that I feel TOs will need to comp many of them if they are to unbalanced and make it more work then it may be worth.

I like the old models better than the AoS or even the 8th ones. The old minis speak of meaning to me. They are like gateways to a deeper world of archetypes and stories. They take me on a journey that goes way beyond just the surface details. I don't wanna collect or even play with highly detailed mini-statues that speak of nothing.

Love your videos! Hope to see many more in the months to come. Enough adulation and on to the business. Yesterday when I saw the statement regarding legacy factions I was in a really bad mood, but today my outlook is much more positive. As you say ToW is a more boutique game - hopefully the core rules give us mechanics that lead to an interesting gameplay. After that it is part of the community/ us players to make the best of it. Their scope for the time being is limited... It is not a core game for GW. However they said in one of the almanacs that they don't necessarily continue chronologically later on... They might jump to the vampire wars in a few years or past the siege of Praag and introduce one or two factions (I guess this would tie in with a reimagining of said faction for AoS). We won't get that many new units in that time even for the core factions that this hopefully won't put the legacy ones too much at a disadvantage. In short I don't think this matters too much and them being frank regarding the more immediate future of the game is better than setting false hopes. We get rules for the legacy factions for free and mostly can buy the models in the AoS range... The amount of official GW tournaments will be limited so I don't think this really should affect us too much and I doubt this would be an issue in any local store event. This statement now hurts a bit more but if they should for whatever reason give us more in the future regarding the lagacy factions they'll be in a much better position compared to being measured against broken promises.

Yes. The fundamentals are the same. However- they need to release the PDF Legacy lists ASAP and ideally at launch, and they need to be good! And find a different formulation than 'not legal' and 'legal' for their hierarchy. I agree with your broad point however.

And their conclusion was that these armies might be even the most popular ones since they only miss the Arcane Journals part that is more thematic / lore focused anyhow and getting minis is easier actually. And releasing the rules that you can get for free before the ones you have to spent money for would be weird - a few days after the 20th seems likely imho.

Bit late to the party, but as someone who planned to play Daemons in Warhammer Fantasy revengeance (AKA The Old World)... I am let down by all of this. My hopeful self wants to believe that the other factions will be releasing later so that GW won't be biting off more than they could chew with this new release. But, the rest of my brain knows far too well that GW repeatedly does not think that way. But it's a case where I would be happy to be proven wrong. Also, shout out to the venerable Slambo! I have so much love for this. So much to unpick here but the the thing that sticks for me is always the minis. Agree 100% they are gaming pieces, not mantlepiece ornaments. Accessibility ain't want it used to be for the hobby side. On the topic of those shortbread biscuit tins, when you are done with scoffing the contents they are perfect for fitting magnetised minis in and they stock perfectly into the Feldherr cases. I'm always on the look out for them!

If you need a traced line of sight to shoot then, one is probebly not allowed to completly hide a unit behind an other unit and charge right through it. As the unit will cover sight(unless cavs count as hill)

I actually think that anyone who wants to play in GW tournies (and have legacy armies) should just write up a list and send it in. Just do that on mass and cause a lot of noise. They'll change their minds. Fantasy players have been looked at as overly dramatic. It's not true, we just want to play WH... and we paid literally thousands of dollars to do it, along with countless hours of hobbying. Being told "ah nah, you can't though" is the stupid side of the argument, not those complaining that killing off rank and flank game and replacing it with a skirmish game, or not being allowed to put your models on the table when there's rules for them, but "oh it's illegal". Write lists, turn up, play anyway. Let's play warhammer.

GW tournaments are a scam anyway, the two that I have been to back in fantasy days specifically stated no heavily customised models, one tournament had a player with Ogres designed to be circus related, the Tyrant was a ringmaster balanced on a gigantic ball. He won the tournament. But then again, both tournaments had all 3 podium positions being GW employees. If you are playing fo fun, who gives a crap about GWs illegal armies... there wil be rules for my Ogres, so i'll still play my Ogres.

Good vid. The magic system does seem very dull from those first battle reports, and heros and heavy cav potentially a bit overpowered. 4th/5th ed are often misunderstood as 'herohammer' - that was true of special characters perhaps, but otherwise it was mainly the arms race of stacking loads of high point magic items on characters that made them so definitive - a simple house rule of restricting number/points of items per character balanced it out easily (not that it was something my teenage contemporaries at the time actually did of course). It seems like this edition that characters and monsters are inherently going to be much stronger than everything else, which will be quite dull also if true, and harder to fix - but in line with GWs 'lets sell lots of big statues' approach to models of recent years. My other big worry is that as with 9th age and other late editions (as I understand it), half the game will be trying to remember all the special rules for each of your units, and how they interact with your opponents - and games often decided by a pure test of memory

Forces of Fantasy was the 1st edition army lists, ravening hordes was the 2nd edition lists.

Quite right. Forces of Fantasy included the brilliant 'Book of Battalions' - sample armies that were just great fun. A whole army of giants, mixed halflings and gnomes, The Insane Necromancer Colin, orcs and hobgoblins with a third of the army being a squadron of wyvern riders led by Biggulz, all that sort of stuff. Vimto monks, proper Slann with the army seeming to be named after losing the cream of the milk to the bluetits that morning. It can be found online and is a lot of fun. Interesting to see that certain things that go all the way back to this along with what's been lost. I also recommend the 'Five Sample Armies' mail order leaflet that came with Ravening Hordes - all the characters and units get names and a little blurb which really give a flavour of what old Warhammer was like. New player here : it seems normal that armies you are not able to purchase from Games Workshop are not considered legal in tournaments. Otherwise it would be impossible to get into the game with a legacy faction (without spending a fortune and buying online which I loathe). My two favorites lore-wise are Vampire Counts and Bretonnia, so I guess I'll be playing Bretonnia.

depends if you want to play for fun, or play for tournament... as a new player you will likely want to play for fun, so play which ever army you want, if there are no rules for it... simply design your own army rules

I'd expect most indi tournaments will include at least some, if not all the pdf legacy factions, if you only want to play at Warhammer World then you need to play by GW rules plus make sure none of your models are 3rd party, resin printed, on a non GW resin base, etc. Many models for the supported armies are currently not available from GW but hopefully that changes soon.

Have to say I did sorta liked magic when they anounced it, now I have been convinced by these arguments. Including the stepup although I think is the least of my preocupations. Is just that I really don't like high lethality in games but yeah no being able to return much feels boring for that player. On the other hand I enjoyed the Miniwargaming report like I haden't enjoy fantasy in a while. I'm confident the comunity will patch what it's missing, nowdays is not like the days of six ed where we were alone in small clumps unable to comunicate, todays comunity can patch thing much better :D

Never a fan of step up as it makes initiative almost pointless in most situations. But in my version of the game (the one I play the most) , we have step up for front rank only (not the second rank) so one still can reduce attacks back at you if have higher initiative. We also have +1 Initiative for a charge (+2/3 for flank/rear charge , and -1 for an uphill charge). 😎

I feel insulted about this lauch. I am an Empire player, but the fact they have done this to the "legacy" factions feels very bad. I litteraly feel used as a consumer and not cared about at all. Thanks for the video. I'm a great fan.

I feel like they have never really figured out the balance, either heroes are over powered or under powered. Either they can sit in front of a unit and kill models and never risk getting killed or you just poor some foot troop attacks in and wipe them out.

Look on the bright side, you're rich in Limited Edition Stack Shortbread Collection from Marks & Spencers. It's baked in Edinburgh you know, it's the kind of gift that makes one feel deeply and personally moved to receive. 😄 I couldn't agree more about the whole “Good” and “Evil” labelling GW is pushing. It removes the grey areas which makes factions and faction relationships interesting and complex. An ogre would just as happily be paid to fight along side an Empire soldier as he would just as happily eat him. Good? Evil? Or opportunistic?

'Step Up' I honestly never liked. It encouraged Death Star playstyles. Glad to see it gone. Overall I think the game looks really solid. My only big problem is the missing races.

PDF's are all available at launch. In fact Steve at MWG let slip that they already had the PDF's. And he said they are done very well. I think this statement was awful though.

It's a topic of endless interest. To some extent there have been changes in the actual system of production, technology, and degree of time and artistic freedom given to sculptors in different eras. But mostly I think the differences come down to what sort of look is 'in' during a particular time- much like with clothing fashions. In my case an obsession with a Warhammer in a certain era - mid.to.lates 80s - makes me playfully unobjective on the subject 😎

So. I'll be honest, the lack of Step up is fatal for tomb kings and presumably the Vampires. There were at least 3 combats in which luca basically just watched Steve kill the front row and then took crumble models off. I hated it the moment I saw it, and I fear it's gonna under power factions with low initiative. I'm trying to stay positive, but I'm seeing things here and there I don't like. Killing Blow seems to be gone on the tomb guard, poisons become wonky, hero hammer is certainly in, and monsters Don't appear any tougher then they used to be, unless ridden by a character. I found the war machine having to roll to hit partial covered models good. Im still waiting to see if we have laser accurate cannons though. I highly approve of the initiative increase for charging, and the adjustment to Strikes Last. That's good. I feel like Brettonia got an incredible power boost. That First Charge Rule is pretty dangerous. Cavalry certainly looks to be on top in The Old World, but I feel like they dunked on infantry too much. We'll need to see how things go.

@@DrBlaxill it gets worse! when you have a weapon with extra ranks, like spears, Losing the front row stops all of them from attacking too. the second battle report from Mountain Miniatures showed a unit of men at Arm's Halberds get charged by skeleton cavalry and lose 4 front rank models. their support rank also lost their attack.

I don't think models with less details are better for newbies. I think models with more details are like a coloring book. You just need to color the details to make the miniature look good. But old models with less details have more plain areas to paint. And this is tricky to make it look good, like a canvas, you need to add details yourself. You can see that comparison like a sculpted banner and a plain banner. Good luck with the freehand.

True, but also: I have in this moment 2 primed and ready models in front of me, a daemonette from the latest underwolds box set, details galore, tiny, all over the thing; and a vintage daemonette with claws as huge as their torso and a nice chainmail shirt. I cant wait to paint the latter one, i have been dreading the first one for a month now.

That's a good counter point. I would say that the complex models require more patience, although more of the detail is dictated to you- I like the 'colouring book' analogy. However I would say with simpler sculpts you can choose to freehand, but don't have to- thus making them great for newbs and experienced. There are also nice opportunities to learn basic shading with say, an old school space marine.

I play Lizardmen (and High Elves), but I'm OK with the PDF armies being illegal for competitive tournaments. You can't run competitive games where some people can't get access to the entire selection of possible armies. People complain (it has already happen in 40K and Fantasy), that they can't buy a unit or army anymore and that gives them a unfair disadvantage. I think most tournaments will make accommodations, I can't imagine anyone saying they don't want to play against PDF armies because they are not involved in the current narrative.

29:00 Herohammer? Oh no. I get PTSD flashbacks from 5th edition. Now, I played Chaos so I could field some over the top heroes. But every game. EVERY GAME. I met a low cost champion on a quick mount with Black Gem of Gnar. Well there was one game where I didnt. But then a similar champ had the item that exploded when he died. So it turned out the same. But still .I vastly prefered when 6th edition rolled around and actual units mattered more

Skaven, Lizardmen, Dark Elves, Vampire Counts etc tournament illegal and not fully supported in the immediate future ? these armies are fundamental to the WHFB armies. I bought some AoS Vampire counts, skellies for a Death Rattle army and zombies to compliment the Vampire Counts and I wish I hadn't now.

It is unbelievable that GW would walk away from Skaven - even for a niche game. I do suspect this "legal and illegal" nonsense is just GW "putting its toe in the bath water," and illegal armies will slowly be "reformed" at a rate directly proportional to the sales of Oldworld books.

Totally with you on the over detailing of modern models. AoS has reached shark jumping levels. I like the old Brets because they’re p*ss-easy to make look stunning and easy to kit bash. To be fair the new bret models have toned down the AoS level of complexity however.

Yes. Although the scale of the new sculpts still looks off to me- the anatomy of the new heroes and mounts is larger scale and sits oddly with the older sculpts in the same army

@@DrBlaxill yep having painted up a duke on the big peg and the new resin horsey BSB the scale creep is evident but I think they’re bang on with the style of these new minis. But I suppose these Bretonnia heroes would be big beefy chads compared to the commoners. I’ve put together some Victrix Norman knights to use as mounted yeomen and it’s quite a fitting difference in size which fits the theme and isn’t jarring IMO anyway!

Looking at reports from Element Games, Wayland and other indi stores it seems GW has once again totally failed to understand the demand for a product. Element have nothing to sell apart from in those that can visit the store and it seems many others are in the same position and only able to order for delivery some time in the future. So much for Warhammer fantasy being an unpopular game

This is what gets me; there is five "good" playable factions but only four "bad" playable factions. Could GW not even out the factions so that its five and five, they could have easily added Vampire Counts, Chaos Dwarfs, Dark Elves, or the Skaven? Gameplay isn't much of a good excuse because each one of these armies plays very different from each other, and differently from the other "playable" armies. They just didn't care. After all it wasn't us who advanced the story of Warhammer fantasy, wrote the end times, and then created AOS. It was GW who did that.
