Just as a note, they adjusted the pdf for VCs (helpfully without any notice) to say that you can't invoke zombies beyond their max starting size. Risen zombies' min and max starting size is whatever you roll on the 2d3 so you can't add to them at all unfortunately!

Maybe you can turn your Varghulfs into Vargheist Champions, they are awesome 😉 For your 2 Varghulfs you get 4 Fly 9 skirmishers with 17 attacks, who are btw easier to heal back, cause they are monstrous infantry. And you have 29 points left

Fun battle report gentlemen! And I completely agreed with the comment about the vampire having 3 wounds. In general, I think vampires (count and thrall) absolutely s*ck for their point values and with the options they have available. I really hope GW will fix that in the future. Very overpriced for what you get and idiotic options (no full plate for example)

Yeah , it’s a problem in the game where dragons and big mounts combine wounds. So the heroes on foot etc have no hope to survive a challenge.

VC player here, I have tried, TRIED so many times to make the Varghulf work. It is simply not good enough for the points cost.

Yeah it’s a bummer , I just painted 2 of them. They need another wound so they get close order and maybe 100 points .

“Static combat res”…assuming the varghouls have more than one wound, doesn’t the flank charge eliminate the rank bonus? If so, the dwarfs should just have the two banners, close order, and wounds. Did the dwarfs inflict that many wounds with the minimal attacks to cause that much crumble?

The Varghiests are skirmishers so they dont cancel ranks.

Yeah, I think what you really wanted was to get those knights and another unit to double team him (as you had mentioned). If you had done that, I think you would have had much better results. Nice game regardless 👍🏻

@@CreakyGamers Probably with knights, you'd want 2 groups of 5, yeah? Since the back units can't attack (they use lances, correct?)... Use some skellies or similar to tie up units and use those knights to hit the flank.

One other question, outside of point denial, why would that immense brick of black knights avoid combat?

I wanted to avoid fighting the Dwarf King's unit. You can see they have some runes which negate my charge bonuses etc , and the Black Knight just died.

@@CreakyGamers I can understand that wanting to avoid the king, but that unit seems too expensive to essentially remove them from the game for that long. IMO It came down to that in the end anyway so I would have put pressure on with them from turn one. If they can’t crack that nut 50% of the time, it may be change his role. :)

Great game! Love seeing all the interesting models from both sides! And you gotta love a photo finish with two clashing generals! Rangers are pretty solid it seems, but the Varghulfs really do seem lackluster like you said. 3 Vargheists are only 40 points more and are much more killy, and all of the other Rare units have their own advantages (Wailing Dirge, Ethereal, being Blood Knigts, etc). Some chaff zombies would really have helped you, I think - one or two units plus the necro with De Noirot could really have held the dwarf infantry in place while your other units stepped around the flank. Vampire counts really go seem to love having hammers and anvils. That said, I think your opponent had a good list and played well. Great game all around!

Yeah I had the black Knights , but needed to pin the dwarfs in place with some chaff.

Hey was wondering if you bought those hills and if so where did you get them. They look like like they have nice slope i end up playing jenga with movement trays

As you say , I dont like the stepped hills and trying to balance movment trays etc , so I made my own hills.

Thanks for posting, I agree with you on the vamps this edition. lets just say I've cracked kemmler and krell out and all the rest of my graveyard of wights. Consider keeping your wight bsb close to your lvl 4 necro, since the wight bsb rule "Hold Your Ground”: Friendly units within the Battle Standard Bearer’s Command range may re-roll any failed Leadership test. In addition, bla bla" applies to his ld test too! . Lastly since you had problems with powerful dwarf characters try sticking the +1 toughness armour on a mounted wight king and a charmed shield for good measure. killing blows aught to keep them honest. and t6 3w 3+ 5++(once) and a regen is much less likely to give much combat res than your poor knight unit,even if he dies!

Thanks The dwarf king usually has the rune of preservation so killing blow doesn’t work on him 😩 I’m gonna try some more blood knights next time I get the Vampires out.
