Wargamers have lost patience. Warhammer Fantasy Battle was never a game where you buy everything all at once. This was a mentality that grew with social media. You were always meant to start small, paint, and grow your army as you ypu grow with the game. Today everyone wants everything so fast, inmediate, and bigger than life. When everyone is rushing so fast they miss the little things in life that make it special.

Though, if you got a Mega Army from Mantic games, you can buy a whole army very easily
@hendrikmoons821810 ай бұрын
Totaly wrong, whFantasy was mostly bought 1 army or a large segment thereoff at a time. Back then you had army releses that basicly gave you a 1500 points army, add to that 2 units/ a monster and BOOM 2k army. This was my main game, back from 1990 till GW dropped the game, the 25-ish folk that in our club played it the most bought the armies they liked, 1 army at a time... Also, over here in Europe, whFantasy was at least as, if not more popular than wh40k. The main reason GW axed it was internal competition with Lord of the Rings, the game they should have let go. They didn't because they would lose the rights...

You can argue with Rick Priestly all you want, but he is right. You were never meant to be a whale. WHFB was always meant to be a game where you built, painted, and grew your army slowly over time. Interesting opinions though on LotR... @@hendrikmoons8218

I got my prices from miniature market. They show the MRSP $290, but sell it for their discounted price of $246.99 (tomb kings). www.miniaturemarket.com/warhammer-old-world-tomb-kings-khemri-edition-gw-07-01.html

If I play The Old World it'll be with my trusty old Vampire Counts army with rules found on the high seas. I believe I've already paid more than enough to GW. When they blew up WFB I lost whatever loyalty I might've felt towards them. I'm happy for anyone who enjoys The OId World and the new models though; more power to ya.

Already spent 1100 euros on Bretonnians. Will spent more as I need the card packs and they have not yet released Questing Knights, trebuchet and the new character and a bunch of older minis. The Miniature prices for Tk and Brets in plastic are roughly, actually the same as they were back before they got shelved. 2x The Box, the brets and fantasy hordes books, the Bret and ToW dice plus the standard bearer ran 500 euros after discounts, added 190 euro for the MtO and another 450 euro for the direct only stuff currently available. Missing the three card packs and 3 packs of sleeves for now, and as said the not yet available stuff. Movement Trays I will 3d Print however, those are absolutely ridiculous priced by GW, they used to be less than 10 quid back in the day, not gonna pay the ridiculous prices they want for them now.

@hendrikmoons821810 ай бұрын
Nobody said or forces you to play every game GW brings. I personaly do not play Warcry or Kill Team. I have limited amount of time and not an unlimited budget. Also 500€ is about the price for most basic wh40k or AoS 2000 point army. Not including paint/glue/box/tools/etc... So the price is about there. Should it be less expensive for now, in avarage, 25 year old models? Yes, my opinion, they should be at 50-75% of the mentioned price. Also like replying to another comment on here... Yes, for sure, back in the 1990ies, we usualy bought the entire army in one go or at least in large segments. It made sence. whFantasy was, like Old World is a strategic wargame that is not 1 or 2 squads of mine versus 2 of yours, each with a hero to lead them. We called that 'border patrol' at 500 points each. It was made to learn the rules, not for toornaments. I love the bigger strategic games like Warhammer Fantasy and Battlefleet Ghotic. So that is what I play most. I also have wh40k Tyranids as main army and in HH my Iron Hands. AoS for me is the entire Death faction + Sylvaneth. So I still need to paint a lot, but as a pure gamer, that is secondary to the game itselve. My toornament armies, get to be painted, the rest ... well whatever, lol. This also has the benefit that if I do not like the army, I'll trade/resell it unpainted. So the new owner can do what they want with it without me wasting time and money on it more than I wanted.

I'm loving the game so far. That's fine that you don't want to play, but I watched part if your video, and you don't understand why I am excited and love this game. What's disappointing about your video is I came to KZbin to be excited about a game that I enjoy, and instead a 1/3 of the videos are so negative and feel like they miss the mark. I mean this in a kind way, but your spending your free time to put content out there that after I try to watch and understand, I instead just feel discouraged watching. Best of luck on your future work!

I just don't really get why The Old World returning was even necessary. We've already got 40k and AoS as the main versions of Warhammer, and with AoS in particular being around, I can't imagine The Old World will bring in a ton of new players, especially with those prices. I imagine it'd mostly be a lot of people who already have Warhammer Fantasy stuff buying this rather than a lot of new players. If you wanted to play The Old World, could you not just use the old rules and models? Why was a whole new release of this old version of Warhammer necessary when you could just as easily continue playing with the stuff you already had?

@Malisteen10 ай бұрын
price is def an issue, even if you go 3rd party/3d printed, which I recommend. if you're trying to stay first party most options of most armies, even the flagship bretts & tomb kings, aren't even available to buy. On that level the game seems mostly aimed at old farts like me who already have warhammer fantasy armies from back in the day. Single player gaming isn't bad actually, especially if you get invested in a bit of homebrew or canon lore around a particular campaign & set of characters, though it doubles the cost issue. solo or against an opponent rank is def a different experience from skirmish gaming, where you get that close up narrative of dudes weaving in and out of cover, up close personal fights. if that's what you're about then yeah, something like warcry or frostgrave or warmahordes or middle earth will work way better for you. That said rank & flank unit tray battles do have a narrative aspect of their own that skirmish games can't really capture, as anyone who's tried to recreate the big battles Helm's Deep or the Pelenor Fields using the middle earth strategy battle game will tell you. And that really is a personal preference thing. if you prefer the more personal individual scale stories, why spend so much more time and money to play out impersonal wider scale stories that you don't find as compelling? I'm all about old world, but if you can recognize up front that it isn't your thing, that's just being smart. dropping a ton of money on a new game just to chase a trend that will have died down long before you'd have time to get a whole army put together, let alone painted, would be a huge mistake.

it should have been done in the warmaster style in the new legion imperialis scale, the price they are looking for janky 20 year old models is insane especially considering how many models are needed; Agree this should have been scaled up properly from a skirmish level, feels like a quick low risk high reward half asses cash grab.
@Snuffalaffagas10 ай бұрын
How many models are you under the impression are needed? GW games aren't cheap by any means but considering the 300$ starter boxes are more than half of an army that's not that insane for a GW game. 400-450$ for an entire army is a phenomenal for MOST mass battle games. The issue isn't the cost is the frequency of cost. It's almost all up front as opposed to spread out Are their cheaper games out there? Absolutely but even the 20 year old GW sculpts hold up leauges better than alot of the "alternatives". Mantic is about the only game that has official models that would cost you less for a rank and flank and their sculpts are super hit or miss. Conquest is MORE expensive

Gotta totally disagree. I’ve never played any fantasy in the past, picked up 40K 2 years ago. I watched a batrep and bought an entire dwarf army (3d printed). I don’t really feel guilty about getting off brand. They are great looking, and I love the game. It’s super enjoyable and very strategic. It does not play like 40K at all. I highly recommend it

Self-avowed skirimish game player doesn't want to play a rank and file game. Well...yeah, that makes sense. I will say your comment about Fantasy playing the same as GWs other games is off the mark. Fantasy is a good bit different than GW's other games, the comment would be more accurate if you were comparing AOS and 40k. Agree that I wish the game was at a smaller scale. I think that players playing a game like this are doing so because they want to see an army on the table. Smaller scale would allow for that much better. The prices are indeed crazy, especially when you consider how old some of these things are. Some of the Tomb King sprues have 1994 printed on them. That's even ignoring the fact that most of the models aren't currently for sale. No, they don't hold up. I played back then as well. If you think the skeleton horses, as one example, still look fine then you need glasses. All in all, I think GW made a fantastic set of rules for people to buy models from other companies. If/when I start a second army, it's going to be entirely 3d printed or bought of Etsy. 1/4 - 1/3 the price for better looking models. Pretty easy choice.
@Snuffalaffagas10 ай бұрын
I would like to offer some fair criticism of your assumptions about the contents of the army starter boxes as well as some other things The dragon from the tomb kings set is arguably one of their best models stat wise and blocks of skeleton warriors and chariots are faction mainstays The box comes out to around 1200/1300 points and a full game is around 2000. You can easily get a fully playable army, dice, templates and all the rules you need for less than 400$ if you shop around at places that sell with the "FLGS" discount. That is phenomenal for a mass battle game price wise Its hardly in the realm of "Youll need to buy a bunch of other expensive things to get the good stat models" I also find it a little odd that someone that admittedly plays mostly skirmish games would bother to review a mass battle game. Thats like REALLY liking apple pie but going out of your way to review orange marmalade and your consesus being "well its not applie pie" Your free to do whatever you please but not every product is meant for everyone so making complaints that compare directly to skirmish gaming seems a bit disingenuous at best Of course a mass battle game is going to have ALOT less varied terrain on the table and your going to have to do repetitive miniature painting to some extent. Once again I would say thats more of a complaint with the type of game system it is rather than the game system itself

you won't be playing because its A) expensive, B) You like skirmish more anyways, C) You would prefer a smaller scale and D) There is no single player option? Warhammer has been a player vs player rank and file army game for the entirety of its existence. If that is not something for you, thats fine. Each to their own. I just ordered a sizeable 3d printed Sons of Ymir army (including all the dwarven holds units I want) from my hobby buddy for 90€. I havent paid Games Workshops laughable pricetags in 10 years. Just because their prices are ridic, I dont stop playing warhammer. I just stopped buying from them. I also have several 10mm scale 3d printed warhammer armies, I use for Warhammer armies project. The enthusiasm for The old World still provides a broader audience/playerbase locally than any WAP community I know of. So thats a big plus for me. Money is not the issue either. The scale is what it is. I will be playing the sheit out of this game with my mates. Hell yeah.

A,B,C are spot on. D I’ll elaborate on, most games I play solo without the need of official solo rules. But because of the style and size of TOW I don’t think it would lend itself well to playing double fisted. Now I’m am interested in trying to play something similar at a similar scale. At the end of the day, it’s about what we get excited for and it sounds like you’ve accomplished a way to play TOW in a unique way that avoids some of GWs nonsense lol. Happy gaming 😁
