In today's video, we are going to talk about the warm front and the cold front.
In order to understand in full this topic, we need to know what an air mass is.
The Airmasses are parcels of air that form the atmosphere. These Airmasses have different temperatures, humidity, and density characteristics.
When two masses of air with different characteristics meet a front is formed because these parcels of air don't really mix but one climbs on top of the other.
The name of the front is given by the air mass that is moving faster and catches up with the slower mass of air.
When a Warm mass of air reaches a colder mass of air the front will be warm. The warm mass of air (since less dense and lighter) will start to rise and slide on top of the denser and colder mass of air.
When a Cold mass of air reaches a warmer mass the name of the front will cold. Since the cold mass of air is heavier and denser it will go under the warm air mass pushing the latter upwards.
The weather phenomena and clouds types associated with these two fronts are different.
With a warm front, you have light rain and middle/high-level clouds.
With a cold front, you have vertical clouds and heavy precipitations.
The lengths of the fonts are different, the warm front can reach as much as 500nm while the cold front is generally half long.
