Pride really is a foolish thing…keeps people apart when who knows what could have been….

I almost lost Soulmate because of my foolish pride, drinking, and roaming eyes, but was truly Blessed by realizing my mistakes and having a forgiving wife. I realized what I had lost, along with our four beautiful little girls. The image of all four girls and my wife crying, looking at them thru the rearview mirror, will haunt me until my dying days, knowing how much I hurt them all, even so long ago. Today, we are both gray haired, she is in a wheelchair, me, a long gray beard, taking care of her and doing it with a singing heart because my entire family are together. On June 16, 2023, we celebrate our 50th! We have truly been Blessed by God because all four daughters and 12 grandkids all live within ten minutes of the wife and I. God is so Good!

This song always reminds me of my parents. They split years ago, but when this song was released, they were still together. My dad used to sing this song and realize it was true for them. I cry everytime I hear it, because his pride and alcoholism got in their way of having a beautiful marriage. For whoever reads this, fix whatever the problem is. Pride is not worth losing the love of a lifetime, and destroying your family.

Alcohol wasn't the problem. Selfishness was. When a person puts their wants over what's really important its tragic. People get into relationships any never think of the sacrifice it takes to make it work. That's why most divorce and then the rest never marry at all just go from partner to partner. I finally found my companion after all these years. It's been demanding at times. I have failed more times than I can count and I can chaulk it up to my own Selfishness and foolish pride, I've been in this relationship for more than 30 years , not sure why my love stuck around after all these years, I've lost all of my family and friends because I chose my companion over them all. , christ is God alone and I think him for the patience and his long-suffering, I'm glad he never divorced me after all I would have deserved it. Christ my heart ❤️

I’ve been a Travis tritt fan for my 41 years. I’ve been through relationships, one night stands, and then some. Been with my wife for 12 years and 4 perfect daughters and I e dealt with only the purpose of the provider and not the daddy. My wife is the epitome of conniving, sabotage, and self serving narcissistic behavior. I’ve stayed at the expense of my own happiness. My foolish pride is that I love her and them unconditionally! And I just keep on going through hell. I’ve spoke my mind, I’ve walked out for a couple days here and there, I’ve made my complaints very much clear. Yet my wife continues to make excuses, make consequential decisions and ultimately make our lives worse than the day before on a regular basis. I love this song because it’s about foolish pride. It’s not always the man that is foolish but the man that allows his wife and kids to remain in foolish pride. In fact, that makes me a fool to stand by and watch the foolishness. This isn’t depression, but unhappiness and confusion and fear. I know exactly what I need to do but my foolish pride tells me to stay, ride it out, and forgive them. And I do, but resentment lays prevalent daily! How can I swallow my pride and take a beating day after day and still genuinely love, smile, provide, shut my mouth and say nothing but I love you. That’s gods work and his gift is to bestow that kinda love within our hearts. But even God resents us. That’s why we repent and ask for forgiveness and confess our sins. If she and my kids could just repent and say sorry and express their love that they claim for me, it would relieve a burden of anguish, resentment, and anger that I have overflowing in my life! I don’t have an extra moment in life to really express my feelings in a positive light. Yet it’s so easy to just be grateful and thankful for my life. I’d never violate my family, or myself but I can make life miserable for all of us just by doing what I should. Chalk another heartbreak up to foolish pride! That shit don’t get any more real regardless! While the bridges burn, another hard lesson learned! As in the ashes’ passion slowly dies… this romance goes down to foolish pride! Chalk another heartbreak up to foolish pride!

I was in your same spot a few years back. I felt myself becoming jaded and bitter. And I DID NOT want that! I had to do three things. I spoke to my child, only to find that he saw the same things that I did, and in his youthful wisdom , he asked me , "Why do you stay with someone who's only purpose in life is to see others as bitter and unhappy as he is?" Then I had to forgive myself. I realized that i didn't have a marriage, I was a servant to his will and temper. I walked on eggshells so as to keep the peace. I lost faith in love. But i had to come to the realization that I couldn't expect someone to love me when i didn't love myself enough to stand up for myself and my needs. I forgave myself for settling for the scraps of affection that I thought i deserved. I made a conscious decision as to whether or not I would be happy again or exist in misery. I was in the hospital with heart issues and he walked into my room and said, "I think I want to make this separation permanent. " I said to him," NOW! You feel the need to say this NOW?" Well the day I was discharged home , I made his favorite meal and when I asked if it was OK, he barked at me, "What ? Do you want a F---ing medal for cooking? A switch flipped in my brain and ever so calmly , I said "I would rather live in a cardboard box on the side of the road , than to spend another day with someone who so clearly has no love or care for my well being or feelings." It was the best decision I ever made. My son and I were so much more at peace on our own. I found my Joy again. I am a much more contented and happier person. I have found someone who showed me what love is supposed to be. I stayed too long in an unhappy space and the fear of starting over with someone new kept me in a prison of pain and resentment. Now, I'm free and happier. Your girls see your pain, and will rejoice in your lighter heart when you are free of your own chains. Only You can make you happy. And when you find your own happiness . you will find the right person to share it with. Much love to you, brother.

I'll say Amen to that, especially this song, which is my favorite by him. When I learned that Don McLean's song "Empty Chairs" was the catalyst for "Killing Me Softly", I got to thinking that each one of us no doubt has their own song that has that kind of affect for them. This is the one that has it for me, as I was in a like situation at the time this song was on the charts. I am also a song lyricist myself, and one of the pieces I came up with was titled "Play Foolish Pride for Me".

I have to thank Travis for this song. Everytime me and my late wife would get into a bad argument, this song would play in my head and remind me she was far more important to me than my foolish pride could ever have been. I would be the one to break the silence and get us talking.

Relationships end for many reasons. I believe Foolish Pride may be one of the most painful reasons though. Probably because by the time you realized the reason was Foolish Pride the relationship had ended. And living with "what might have been" last forever.

One thing I love about Travis Tritt is that he is always honest with his music. He just tells it like it is and its just pure country. Whether its happy, sad, or angry he always says the truth with his music.

This song is part of my childhood (I'm 37 now). The 90s is the best decade in country. I miss how 98.1 The Hawk was before 1997 and cable channel TNN (Nashville).

Pride can make you lose a lot if Yu don't speak your peace. How do you really deal with a person that's to prideful to admit there wrong and just say there sorry and explain. I think there's to many that don't really see were there wrong or care I use to not prayers for truth and to release the fact of closesure on life spent not forgotten but remember and some enjoyed lesson learned on my mistakes but know word on posted words . I love you lord I'm me and never forget that prayers for that one and sending love for lessons in life.
