At those times the elite had one of their sons go into the church as the church was the 3 rd estate, after the crown and the nobility, so a major power source in the state. But being brought up would learn the war/armed trade with their brothers more so than a theological education. So not a surprise that there were more than a few warrior priests.

4. juni 1134 there is a battle in Foteviken in what is today Sweden. Its a battle about who is going to be king in Denmark. 60 priests and 5 bishops die in the battle. Also try to google "biskop Absalon statue" the bishop who started the danish capital Copnhagen. He is a warrior in chainmail and armed with an axe. There is an old tradition in Skandinavia for churchmen being warriors, and the island of Man is an old skandinavian kingdom. It is said, that the normans were god churchmen, but bad christians,. They were christianised very late, around the year 1000 bce, and they were very fond of saint Michael, the angel wielding a flaming sword. Also look into the battle of Civitate, a battle were the pope is taken captive by normans.

The oldest testament i Denmark is that of Bishop Absalon, and in that testament, he gives away at least 3 chainmails, and a lot of horses.

The bishops were usually the 2nd , 3th , etc so they more than likely had some elementary military training .Just the basics like it says in GOT ,stab them with the pointy end . Then when it comes to opulent wealth ,it is easily explained as being “Gods”. The same applies to churches and the personal quarters it’s “Gods house”.

After seeing this video i am very confused if we are talking about the same medieval ages. Maybe, as you said after minute 45 you are talking about british priests, the situation there was maybe very different than on the continent. If so please mention that and explain why it was so different. As of my historical knowledge, that is mostly about united and eastern (later refered as HRE) francic empires, many things were totally different to your basic assumptions about priests and bishops (well they still count for lower class monks). You assume priest and bishops were religios persons and chose to becomes priests or bishops instead of their families decided for them. That was far from true were i come from(rhine region). Church was all about politics. Maybe there was somewhere in an unimportant area a non noble priest who was a true christian but most of the churches and monasterys were keyposition for noble families to rule the country . In the post roman era the nobles used their second, third etc. sons on this positions to keep the romanii and unfree peoples (who were mostly christians) in line with their fathers/brothers reign and avoid riots. They were preaching the nobles (germanic lords) are send by god to rule them. Statistically for sure their were priests, that most likely were not even Christians at all when private. In later medieval times the richest countrysides were ruled by bishops and that bishops voted the kings - keypositions for the dominance of noble families in the HRE. The bishops had lots of mistresses, castles, hunting palaces and forests, dancing/gambling clubs etc. AND they didn t even spoke the same language then the people there, because they were send as non first borns to rule as bishop there from tousands of miles away, not having interest in religion at all. Beeing not the first sons they have to go to church to be out of the succession thus not getting motivated to murder their brothers, but still beeing rich and with their families compete with other houses for dominance in europe. And as you mentioned, if the pope doesn t like the family politics, then the family head declares an antipope and a war which will be the right pope. Or they just start the 30 years war... Was england so different? I mean later maybe, but during anglo-saxon times why it should have been different (serious question). And then after centuries you already have the tradition of warrior priests/bishops established... I am not an expert, history is my hobby, i am just a chemist, so please, where i am wrong correct me, lets discuss and teach me more history. Thank you. EDIT: just look at Battle of Worringen 1288 or the Cologne War 1583-88 (Bishop of Cologne versus Bishop of Bajuvaria).

Something about the title I dislike. It seems to place a positive value on violence from Christian leaders when we seem as a group in the English speaking world to condemn the same when we see it in other religions. Extremist/radical Abbot might be more consistent with our values unless we want to embrace what we condemn in other groups so long as it"s us or ours.

Kai Hinkelmann as I stated the episode actually discusses this subject in its proper context and as what was acceptable and unacceptable forms of violence in the Middle Ages and the voices on both sides of a complicated argument.
